When you were at school were you obsessed with anyone famous?

& if so what did you do about it?

I saw an actor today on TV who I'd not thought of in ages. He's old now but when I was at school my best friend was OBSESSED with this actor. One year he had a rep part in a local theatre and she "made" (!!) me basically stalk him. Almost every Saturday she wanted to go and hang round the theatre before and after the matinee. I saw that show more times than it was worth.

She read every interview she could find and then if he said he liked a sandwich bar in a particular city she'd want to go there too.

This was pre-internet and it made me wonder whether this sort of thing is less common now because of the internet and social media that people have more perceived "access" to the object of their affection. Why go and hang round a theatre if you might have a chance of chatting to them on Instagram or Twitter without leaving your house?

If you were at school pre-internet did you do any of this kind of thing or drag your very lovely friends into your madness?

[PS: this friend of mine died when she was 30 so I'm sad I can't tell her I saw this guy on TV today looking old and crusty]

@MakeMineABombay I think it's called de Clerembault's syndrome, when someone believes the person they are obsessed with is trying to send them messages saying they love them back. I could have spelled it incorrectly, but it was in Enduring Love

Ah, I saw the film when it came out. Definitely didn't recognise my 13 year old self in Rhys Ifans' character, thank goodness. Very disturbing!

I’ve still got my Stephen gately doll, still boxed.

John Taylor, David Sylvian and Val Kilmer

Jerome Flynn. In the days when he and Robson Green were “singers”. I even posed by the TV once and got my mum to take a photo so it looked like we were together.

I hadn’t thought of him for years then I discovered his stories on the “calm” app which help you sleep. I now have him reading me a story every night before bed!

Ladyofthelake53 · 15/03/2023 08:30

Forgor Adam Ant and Billy Idol

Robson and Jerome. Mostly Robson. Gives the ick now.

Stephen Gately from Boyzone. Was convinced we'd get married. RIP Stephen many tears were shed.

PollyDarton1 · 15/03/2023 08:35

Nick Carter 😂I wouldn't touch with a bargepole now.

Gareth Gates. My bedroom was absolutely full to the brim of posters and magazine cut outs of him to the extent I had to cover my door and ceiling. I went to all concerts and local appearances and held up big banners each time. Had T-shirts and even called my hamster Mrs Gareth Gates. I sobbed for hours when he lost pop idol after attempting to vote for him all night but being unable to get through, convinced myself it was a fix!

Can’t stand the wet lemon now, he’s basically a tangerine.

He worked with a friend of mine for a while and I spent an evening in the hotel with him and a bunch of other people. He was very sweet and bought all the drinks. Very tall!

Shakin Stevens. I loved him so much. I used to write fanzines with me in a starring role as his girlfriend.

This is fascinating. A friend had a platonic crush on a same sec tv presenter. She found out everything about her through interviews, watching the programmes etc. she wrote to her regularly and even had a few replies. And traveled nearly 200 miles to her house (uninvited), didn’t knock but just sort of walked uk and down the road. She was out, thankfully! The presenter was very kind indeed to her actually over time.

Mine were Roger Taylor from Queen and, oddly, a Russian gymnast called Nicolai Andrianov.
Oh, and Rudolf Nureyev.
I lived in the deep West Country so there was never any chance of meeting any of these people.
I did get to meet David Cassidy when he came back with The Last Kiss in the 80s and he was an absolute sweetheart. I was heartbroken by his death and how sad he seemed at the end.

Solow12 · 15/03/2023 08:45

Bruce Willis, when I was about 8. I had his album (yes he made an album) on cassette and took the inlay into school and told all my friends all about him. I imagine they were fascinated 😬😆
Later on, it was Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner. I found a weird Photo Booth where you could choose from a selection of superimposed celebrities to have your photo taken with, and Mel was on there. I was THRILLED.

DorritLittle · 15/03/2023 09:27

Kylie and Jason (more Kylie, sorry Jason), and Mike from Neighbours to a lesser extent. Would now be to a much greater extent…

@aftersunandlays thank you - de Clerembault's syndrome from Enduring Love - that's it!
