I've eaten out of date fish

... will I live to tell the tale?

M&S Thai fishcakes, use by date was yesterday. We have just eaten them for dinner.

I usually never risk things as I'm an emetophobe, but I'm a bit obsessed with reducing food waste at the moment so I just couldn't bin them.

How soon will I know if it was a mistake?

You’ll be fine. Promise.

ginislife · 13/03/2023 20:46

1 day ?? I'd still be eating those on Friday !!

Dotcheck · 13/03/2023 20:49

You’ll be fine. If they were off they would have tasted bad

Tilllly · 13/03/2023 20:49

Fish smells and tastes rank if it's off

You'll be fine 😊

DarkNecessities · 13/03/2023 20:50

Fish cakes a bit different as packaged in protective atmosphere. Fine!

WhatsMyFate · 13/03/2023 20:51

Thanks @FfeminyddCymraeg

@ginislife you and DH both. He will eat anything regardless of the use by date (including meat, fish, shellfish. ...) He's not once had food poisoning.

But he has a freak digestive system, he's never been sick in his life, even when the whole household has been struck down with norovirus and one of the DC vomited on him.

It's unbelievable, I'm so jealous.

We ate chorizo that went out of date on 1st March today. See you in hell 😂

martha4clark · 13/03/2023 20:58

It cod be worse 🤣

Fluffyhoglets · 13/03/2023 21:03

You'll know by tomorrow morning - probably overnight - if there is an issue with them - but it's unlikely tbh. Good luck!

NoEffingWay · 13/03/2023 21:04

You will be fine. Logically speaking food doesn't turn at midnight on the sell by date.,..

alwaysmovingforwards · 13/03/2023 21:07

If it looks and smells ok, I'll cook it and eat it.

letitkeepgoing · 13/03/2023 21:10

You'll be fine! I wouldn't eat out of days fresh fish (like salmon or whatever) but fishcakes are very unlikely to be a problem.

Notaflippinclue · 13/03/2023 21:20

I've eaten out of date squirrel

Soproudoflionesses · 13/03/2023 21:35

I don't reqlly beliebe in use by/best before dates, just go by smell. Sure you'll live op

I'd feel more comfortable with that I think. So processed and full of salt, I'm sure it self preserves! (Plus I definitely couldn't have resisted some chorizo!)

But if not, I WILL see you there!

So glad it's a unanimous Yes! And that I'll be quick to know if not. Definitely wouldn't want to be struck down next week when I won't be expecting it anymore!

Use by and best before dates cause so much food waste, those fishcakes would probably have been fine for weeks.

I never even bother to read them. If it looks fine, smells fine and tastes fine, it's fine. I've eaten things that are months out of date and not died yet. And I don't have some sort of magic iron stomach, just common sense.

NewNameForXmas · 13/03/2023 21:56

I've just had a chicken and bacon slice dated 6th March ... was still delicious. I do have a cast iron stomach though, rigorously trained by eating out of date food regularly. I had a strawberry mousse last night dated 12th Feb.

ODFOx · 13/03/2023 22:01

Was it fizzy in your tongue? Did it smell weird?

No? Then get a good night's rest and smoke yourself a kipper/ make a slab of bubble and squeak for breakfast: you will certainly be here.

justasking111 · 13/03/2023 22:02

You'd know if fish was off, the smell alone. You'll be fine

Hardcore. Even I would question the mousse,

Chorizo has a use by date? 😂

Mum2jenny · 13/03/2023 22:06

No worries, if it’s dated this month and the packet isn’t ‘blown’, it’ll be fine whatever it is

WarningToTheCurious · 13/03/2023 22:09

Tonight I ate a chilled chocolate sponge pudding that was best before 25/11/22 (it did get a good blast in the microwave).

So far so good ..

Willowweaving777 · 13/03/2023 22:10

Try not to worry op, I saw in one of those programmes about food factories that they allow a couple of days grace with use by dates. And M&S Thai fish cakes will I imagine contain salt and spices that will help preservation. I’m sure you will be fine!
