Having ate shit all day despite having covid and not being able to fucking taste anything!!

Confirms to me it's just boredom and habbit because I'm getting zero enjoyment from the taste am I? Everything tastes like cardboard but I'm still shovelling it in!

Am 20lbs over weight and fed up with myself.

And ill do it again tomorrow.

If you're not enjoying the taste, that's information which is important to know. You're probably compulsive about some aspect which isn't the taste. Sugar, sensory seeking, boredom?

There's things you can do to work out which.

Wuggie · 11/03/2023 23:46

Boredom maybe? The repetitiveness? It's just what I do.

I kind of get a bit hungry by the evening but not so much that I need to eat.

Crochet, knitting or something that keeps your hands busy? Or is it mental boredom, do you think?

Wheretheskyisblue · 12/03/2023 05:49

I think you need to recognise that this is a food addiction. Highly processed foods are designed to be addictive and trigger the same dopamine reaction in the brain as smoking does. I would try cutting them out alltogether for a couple of weeks and see how you feel. Eat as much of the non processed food group as you want if you still feel hungry. You will lose weight and feel 100% better.

This is a good idea thanks I'm not OP but I'm going to try it for me

Schnooze · 12/03/2023 06:30

I’m exactly the same. Why do we do it to ourselves?

georgarina · 12/03/2023 06:35

I have a CBD drink in the evening and it's such a game changer. Relaxing and takes away the urge to snack for stress relief/boredom.

@georgarina can you recommend a brand of CBD drinks please? I'd like to drink less wine of an evening and this could be the 'game changer' I'm looking for 🙏
TIA x

I'm a snacker I literally feel comforted when I chew. it's a hard habit to get out of! I'm also worse when I'm ill for some reason. Try not to be negative with yourself. You end up in a crap cycle of - ate a load of food, disgusted with myself, feel shit, need to feel better, eat to cheer myself up etc - agree things to do are helpful- crosswords, reading, knitting etc. Just take it a day at a time and if you have a bad day start a fresh tomorrow.

RunTowardsTheLight · 12/03/2023 07:28

I use My Fitness Pal to log what I eat. It does help with the snacking because it makes you stop and think "do I really want to log this?" rather than just shoving the food in mindlessly.

Summerhillsquare · 12/03/2023 07:29

Oh, me too. In my case its tiredness. Eating is the only thing that makes me feel better, a comfort thing too.

BCBird · 12/03/2023 07:33

I hear you. I.have gained 4 stone in last 6 years. I am.worse now because suffering from.bereavement and Covid anxiety. I so annoyed with myself. Walked 4 miles yesterday but that cancelled out by the crap I.ate. New day today.

MuggleMe · 12/03/2023 07:35

Also, when you eat at a regular time your brain anticipates the food and sends out hungry signals even when you don't need it. I slowly weaned myself off snacking in the evenings by switching to fruit and veg then nothing, although back on the cake again now 🙄

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2023 07:36

I went to the gym the other night, came home and ate my tea but was still starving, so I ate a whole tin of rice pudding. I know for a fact that if I hadn’t gone to the gym I wouldn’t have eaten the rice pudding. It’s so frustrating.

Drinkinggreentea · 12/03/2023 07:38

Read a book about emotional eating/binge eating. They're usually very helpful x

Mammothwoollyjumper · 12/03/2023 08:00

You have COVID you are probably feeling really rough cut yourself a break. 20lb is not huge you are definitely not a pig. Good to think about changes you can make once you're well but be kinder to yourself about your eating habits too.

applecharlotte12 · 12/03/2023 08:00

@CrystalCoco I have a Trip drink every evening. So delicious and only 20 calories a drink. drink-trip.com

incognitodorrito · 12/03/2023 08:05

That must be the identical strain of covid as mine last year. I shovelled an entire pizza, couldn’t get enough carbs into me ! Just do what your body needs to at the moment and once your better, have a look at the intermittent fasting thread. It really works !

CrystalCoco · 12/03/2023 08:17

@applecharlotte12 thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll check them out! x

danni0509 · 12/03/2023 08:18

I’m like this and the reason I was 6 stone overweight. (Bad yo yo dieter, can be 11 stone in the January and 15 stone by the end of the year then back down to 11 stone the next year type of thing)

I do intermittent fasting. Kitchens open and closed at a certain time and I don’t eat other than those windows being open. Its really the only thing that helps me to lose weight now.

Read obesity code and binge code. Helps with the emotional / binge eating side of it.

Ive gone from 16 stone to 12 in the past year (2 more to lose) really going to try maintain it when it’s all off this time, getting older and it’s not been easy to shift. I imagine I’ve fucked my metabolism over the years too. I go to the gym 4 times a week now and have spent a year trying to teach myself about healthier choices.

It’s a long battle but I’m pleased I’m finally trying to get it sorted out. Im no way cured from binge eating though.

I remember once when I had shocking tonsillitis could barely swallow my own saliva but stood in the kitchen pouring food down my throat just because that’s what I do..! It is an addiction.

78Summer · 12/03/2023 08:21

I found when I was in the same job for years I was snacking more. I just started a new role and already losing weight from feeling refreshed and far busier - back in the office more etc. So for me boredom came into it.

RichardsGear · 12/03/2023 08:25

Er, am I reading it wrong or are those Trip drinks ridiculously expensive? Six drinks for 35 quid?

OP, it's hard not to mindlessly eat. If you didn't have crappy food in would you still overeat healthy stuff? Are you better when you're at work and busy?

Sturmundcalm · 12/03/2023 08:26

you can def get the trip drinks cheaper than that - i tend to pay around £1.50/can

CandidaAlbicans2 · 12/03/2023 11:39

@Wuggie, it's good that you recognise that you're eating out of boredom and habit, so try and find alternatives to food in those situations. If you're bored what could you do to relieve that other than eat? If you're stressed how could you relieve the stress without eating? If it's habit how could you distract yourself? What new healthier habit could you develop instead?
Every time you get the urge to eat stop and ask yourself if you're hungry and, if not, what else is going on

Yes, because that 6 pack also has a 1000mg oil with it, it’s £14 for just the drinks. And as pp says, you can get it cheaper elsewhere (Holland and Barrat sell it — but I don’t know how much it costs there)
