So what DO rich people wear? (Lighthearted)

Was just chatting with a friend and she was talking about how truly wealthy people don’t wear labels but just wear “quality”.
So no designer etc.
but when I asked her what they actually wear then, are there secret “rich people” brands she couldn’t answer? Just said vaguely you know, quality expensive stuff?

so I’m curious, what do they wear? If I wanted to pretend to be a rich person for a day and look “expensive” in an understated day where would I find my clothes?

lighthearted because obviously just a bit of fun and I’m too tired to dress up as me let alone a rich person today, I’m in sweatpants 😂

Your average well off person will be wearing Burberry, Gant, Barbour, non showy Chanel and Prada. Understated but good.

Uber Rich wear brands that I have never heard of.

AnnaMagnani · 11/03/2023 18:39

The only fur I see out and about is drug dealer chic on Canada Goose coats.

In the UK no-one wants paint thrown over them for wearing a full on fur coat.

They really really won't!
Thats all very non U.

My friend is old money, the sort or family that only marries into other families of the kind. The titles, the houses etc

He was telling me the other day about his new cushions....from Pep&Co.

His clothes are mainly muted neutral tones and tweed. His lot certainly wouldn't be caught dead in loud designer clothes with "BOSS" etc written across them.

KnittedCardi · 11/03/2023 18:49

The key is that it doesn't t matter where it comes from, it may be expensive or not. However it will always be fairly plain, not showy, and in natural fabrics, cotton, linen, wool, silk.

Janedoe82 · 11/03/2023 18:49

I have friends from a wide range of backgrounds- the really rich vary depending on whether new money or not. New money lots of designer stuff. Old money more subtle- cheap stuff mixed with good quality boots/ coat.
Neither in Nike tracksuits

New money is a better expression than non U- that is what I was aiming for
Prada and Burberry are new money

Burberry didnt use to be.

DemBonesDemBones · 11/03/2023 18:52

All the old money rich people I know wear riding gear, M&S and Barbour.

SpaceNambo · 11/03/2023 18:54

I am rich. I dress like a bag lady mostly. I used to dress posh but now I cba with it. I'm not pretentious any more. I rather like going under the radar. I get judged a lot in smart places. That bit is sad.

Someone on here suggested house of bruar last summer as they had cashmere cropped cardies in their sale that for those of us petite, would look standard sized. I ordered one, it’s anmazing quality compared to cashmere jumpers/cardies I’ve found in normal high street shops. They now send me their catalogs, I’d say they were old posh people clothes.

there’s a thread running in style and beauty at the moment about brands and demographics - it’s lots of “designer” priced clothes, but brands /designers that aren’t high profile, just good quality and nice.

PillBoxes · 11/03/2023 18:58

Good posture, good hair, subtle jewellery, discreet (but leather) handbag/backpack, neutral colours, crisply turned out freshly ironed garments (OMGAWD), non make up make up, no plastic surgery or obvious pneumatic boobs and duck lips, confident, and a credit card.

That's me lol.

Wtaf, there's a specialist stalking dept on House of Bruar! 🤣

I remember having a conversation with a visitor at the mental health unit I cannot remember why . Anyway he was wearing one of those branded fleeces and indicated he looked rich no mate you look like a drug dealer. I don't know whynpeople think wearing off the peg brand names make you look rich i

I went to the Dior show at a museum where I learnt only 12 people wear haute couture. That is 12 people in the whole world!!!

A lot more than 12 people wear it. It was expected to die out a couple decades ago I think, but actually there are now so many very rich people it’s booming. So you get designers like Giles Deacon who have stopped doing off the peg to just focus on it.

Pedallleur · 11/03/2023 19:28

Different rich people will wear different things. A Russian oligarchs wife/gf might indulge in designers like Prada or Chanel. Men will go for Saville Row or custom Brioni even better if you can wear your father's Saville Row.

to be fair an oligarchs wife is going to struggle to buy anything in Europe these days

The secret is not where their clothes are from or how much they cost, but that everything will have been altered to fit them.

That's true
1st thing I notice is if a mans trouser and sleeve length is right - it costs a few ££s to sort out- why wouldn't you?

pastabest · 11/03/2023 21:08

The men have suits made for them

the women have dresses altered for them

the materials are good quality and can cope with adjustments

professionals launder their clothes - no shove in the tumble dryer and hope for the best.

katemiddletonstyle.org/brands-designers/ - it's not about 'no brand names' it's about classic tailoring whether that's off the peg or not.

Starseeking · 11/03/2023 21:12

I just looked at Loro Piana having seen it mentioned twice in the first few posts...those bags look seriously lovely 😍

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/03/2023 21:21

I watched a thing on Tiktok the other day - they wear brands, but not the stuff you buy in stores. They'll have Gucci tailor their suits, or YSL tailor their dresses. It's only the nouveau riche or the not actually very rich at all that will display a brand!
