So what DO rich people wear? (Lighthearted)

Was just chatting with a friend and she was talking about how truly wealthy people don’t wear labels but just wear “quality”.
So no designer etc.
but when I asked her what they actually wear then, are there secret “rich people” brands she couldn’t answer? Just said vaguely you know, quality expensive stuff?

so I’m curious, what do they wear? If I wanted to pretend to be a rich person for a day and look “expensive” in an understated day where would I find my clothes?

lighthearted because obviously just a bit of fun and I’m too tired to dress up as me let alone a rich person today, I’m in sweatpants 😂

We live in a nice area but it's unheard of here to see people walking around in obvious, branded clothes.

Everything is very subtle, expensive bags, jewellery, shoes etc but no "flashy" clothing.

I like to have nice things as I appreciate the quality, however, I can't stand brash prints or logos.

We have family and friends in cities who are different, a friend once said to me "I've worked hard and being able to afford these items shows that."

So regardless of wealth, it's purely taste, isn't it?

That’s because old money do not really have money. At least new money was earned through hard graft rather than having very questionable origins

yep so much nefarious history but weirdly new money is seen as the crass option!

Though I think people are being naive if they think all ‘new’ money is honestly earned through hard graft!

I used to work for uber-rich people. Their clothing/accessories definitely showed their wealth, mostly due to the fact that they employed stylists to purchase their clothing and to put together outfits for them. Plus they were all altered to perfectly fit them. I think that makes the biggest difference, rather than which store/designer they were from.

significantly more likely than old money.

this is one area where MN is so fucking twee: posters tug their forelocks at the “charming landed gentry with their battered land rover and moth eaten cashmere” as if their centuries of sugar plantation and factory ownership makes them a better person than the footballer wearing supreme and palm angels and earning their money by showing up and training hard.

No, not ALL new money but rarely is old money clean from very disturbing and disgraceful history. Often with their own internal family dysfunction.

Well done to those with new money. Definitely not second fiddle to old money. In fact, they should be proud and flaunt it. Respect to those who work hard for what they have.

I imagine, a lot of wealthier people (not super rich) would have personal shoppers and buy their everyday wear in department stores with high end departments also possibly higher end high street; Jaeger, Karen Millen, Hobbs, Reiss, Jigsaw, Mint Velvet. Richer might shop at Harvey Nichols, Liberty's Harrods, or buy abroad during trips.

I admit this is just my guess not based actual fact! and this is what I would do if I had more disposable income.

blisstwins · 12/03/2023 13:31

Brora, max Mara, altos, etc

blisstwins · 12/03/2023 13:34

yep!

Depends what you mean by rich but not overpriced designer stuff - that's partly how people become rich.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/03/2023 21:06

I think very wealthy people are having lots of things made and are also having alterations on anything ready to wear.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 12/03/2023 22:00

I'm laughing as deck shoes were being held up as chavvy in a thread about Brits abroad. The poster never did come back and tell me what classy Brits wore to dinner on holiday.

Spudlet · 13/03/2023 09:22

I think we’re at the point now where someone on S&B will call absolutely anything and everything chavvy. ‘Oh, the actual Crown Jewels? With an Guate couture dress made to fit perfectly? So tacky and tasteless!’ 😂

Spudlet · 13/03/2023 09:24

Haute, no idea what Guate is. An edit function, an edit function, my kingdom for an edit function…
