Ideas on how to keep birds out of tree

We have quite a tall silver birch in our garden. Don't have the funds to have it removed at the minute.
Any ideas on how we can deter birds from using our tree?

The same birds are having a conversation wondering how they can get this crazy lady to stop bothering them in their own home 😆

But op we ALL have surrounding areas where birds live/poo

Why is your 'small child' so special that it needs its own no fly zone?

Movinghouseatlast · 11/03/2023 12:39

Google ultrasonic bird deterrent. They are around £190 but to my surprise it works. In my case I had hundreds of rooks in my garden. I am in splendid rural isolation surrounded by woodland yet the trees they went for were in my garden. The noise and amount of poo is horrendous. They haven't gone completely but I have reduced the numbers.

Newstartonwards · 11/03/2023 12:40

Get a cat that will kill a few of the birds 🤦‍♀️

PuttingDownRoots · 11/03/2023 12:42

We have anti bird spikes on top of the children's swing, so I can understand to a certain extent!

Unfortunately they are wild animals and its nesting season.

GoodChat · 11/03/2023 12:43

How big are the birds that you're having piles of poo left in the garden?

m1s · 11/03/2023 12:44

@Newstartonwards as I said.. don't want to kill them so your suggestion is redundant. Thanks for trying to be funny though

Are these birds pigeons? They seem to have a lot of excrement. You would be best to try and get a mock raptor bird and put it in your tree.
I have a lot of birds (not pigeons). I have bird feeders. No problem with excrement.

My Mum used to hang old CDs from the tree and this used to deter them- they didn’t seem to like the reflections and movement they make. Although looks pretty odd having a tree with a load of cds dangling from it! 🙈😁

I second this, I got a something similar for cats to stop my cat going near the road. Instead it cleared all of the birds from the trees in my garden near to where I put it.
The cat still goes on to the road though🤦‍♀️

Get a Labrador as they'll eat all the bird shit like ours does 🤢😂

m1s · 11/03/2023 12:55

@GoodChat really? If you really want know (not that it matters but whatever) they're pigeons. Not quite sure how many. Never counted. Regardless, they are shitting for England

My local asda has loud wild animal noises in the car park.

Maybe thats to deter pigeons?

m1s · 11/03/2023 12:56

@Ihaveabadfeelingaboutthis I have a labrador 🙈 and he is eating it. But didn't want to mention that as it's obviously ammo for people to say 'problem solved' 🙄😂

There must be some dodgy seeds where you are to be causing that much chaos!

But CD's actually works like a PP suggested, or get a statue of a falcon or something similar.

toomuchlaundry · 11/03/2023 12:59

we have a tree that attracts pigeons. This year has seemed worse for poo than previous ones. Had to use dog poo bag to pick up their deposits the other day it was so prolific, before the dog thought it was a special treat to either eat or roll in 🤮

I have this problem with pigeons too. They also shit all over my washing ffs.

but how does one get up the tree to hang the cds? And how many are we talking need to be hung? At the top or near the trunk or on branch’s?

would I have to wait for the leaves to come first?

thanks 😁

m1s · 11/03/2023 13:05

@SunshineGeorgie he's not 'special'. I'm not sure what you allow your children to play in (assuming you have children) but I certainly don't let my child play in bird poo. Especially since he's not full vaccinated yet. Doesn't need his own no fly zone. Just a bit of the garden to be bird poo free would be nice

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 11/03/2023 13:07

Just stop cutting your grass. I have 2 pairs of massive fat pigeons in my garden and presumably they’re pooping all over the place but my grass is currently a foot long so I can’t see the shit. 🫣

dizzy174 · 11/03/2023 13:08

i have a young bird that has started to sit on the wing mirror of my car. it poops all over the mirror and down the side of the door.

GoodChat · 11/03/2023 13:10

@Workinghardeveryday use a ladder!

Individual CD's are fine or make hangers that hold 3 or 4 vertically. How many you need depend on how big your tree is but you don't need to wait for the leaves to grow back, just hang them on the ends of the branches so they don't get overgrown Grin

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/03/2023 13:11

Sprinkler system pointed at tree to go off intermittently.

Gas banger... though the neighbours may object, tis slightly overkill for one small garden...

Fake raptor on a boingy wire type affair - ditto big plastic owl. Pigeons ain't clever so the fake stuff does tend to confuse them particularly if it moves or if it is regularly moved from one position to another.

Lend you my Saluki, she HATES pigeons with a passion and yells at them. Yelling Saluki also not a favourite with neighbours and she has stamina, she can do it for HOURS.

Shesasuperfreak · 11/03/2023 13:11

I have seen the cds in the trees, but I thought it was a child's homemade tree decoration, I didnt realise they were deterrents.
