Hello

i am size 20. I would very much like to be size 10. I am 5ft 8.

have taken steps in right direction but keen to know how long this has taken anyone IRL.

google takes me to surgery options which I’d rather not explore for now

Depends on weight
Clothes sizing varies too much to say

RelentlessForwardProgress · 11/03/2023 11:43

I need to lose about 15lbs to go down a dress size, so for me that's about 75lbs of weight loss. When I was very big, initially I lost 3 or occasionally 4lbs a week, so I nearly made a stone a month for the first 6 months, but that was starting much bigger than a size 20..
I remember I went from size 18 to size 14 in 15 weeks, so about 2lbs a week, then size 14 to get down to 10 was more of a slog, it took about 30 ish weeks.

100daykickupthearse · 11/03/2023 11:53

Ok so am 15 and a half stone :-(

probably need to be 10.

so realistically a year?

Why a size 10 and not a 12 or 14 which would probably be more realistic and sustainable, especially if you're tall?

pizzaHeart · 11/03/2023 11:57

I think it very much depends on how committed you are and how many time and money your can spend on this plus your age and reasons why you are overweight.
If you can go to gym every day, get support of dietician and personal trainer, you are younger and don’t have health conditions which may affect your exercise options it will be much more doable.

I guess I’m thinking of ultimate goal. Have been a 14 for a very long time before and still felt big

I lost a big amount of weight, and agree that when you are heavy, you lose more a week, but towards the end it really slows down. Also, there are different schools of thought about losing weight too quickly - some say bad for loose skin and long term keeping it off, others say this is false and fast is good for motivation.

I used to aim for a pound a week. at the start it was much quicker and I was ‘ahead’, then later if I had a low loss week, I would see it in context of the other losses. On average, a pound a week turned out to be about right.

This is amazing. What did you do?

I set my fitness pal at 1400kcals a day, logged all my food, allowed myself to eat anything within those calories, and walked and walked until I was light enough to start couch25k and then I started running. I did not eat back the calories from exercise, so whatever exercise I'd done, I still ate 1400

SisterAgatha · 11/03/2023 12:03

Took me 2 years. I was 15.11 and lost 5 stone.

im still not a 10 on the bottom though and never will be. I’m 5ft 3.

MultipleVeganPies · 11/03/2023 12:03

What is the reason you are overweight now?

Depends if you are an emotional eater, or have pcos, under active thyroid, or prone to binge eating? Did you eat healthily today or does the diet start tomorrow?

That sort of thing

Wombats23 · 11/03/2023 12:04

Depends on age too. I went from 92kg to 76kg in about 9 months in my early 40s. So size 20/22 to nearly a 12 as I'm short.

I think it buggered up my thyroid. It was an aggressive weight loss with lots of training.

Now I'd aim to lose maybe 2 kg in the same timeframe. Older, crapper, slower but also more interested in holistic health, so preserving my bones, thyroid, skin, etc.

Interestingly, I went back up to 90kg due to thyroid issues but given I'm a lot fitter, I'm still smaller than I was totally untrained.

Omg well done. Thank you x

I think the thing to remember if you can, is that even a stone will make you feel better. When you get down to a 16, a lot more clothes look better on you, you don't find moving around and daily life as tricky, so basically it gets easier, so if the last couple of stones take longer, its not so bad. Its not a year of feeling so low about things, its a year of progressively feeing better

This is the exact same way I lost 5 stone too. IMO this is the best way. I have kept the weight off too. Well done on your loss!

JennyDarlingRIP · 11/03/2023 12:06

I've lost 4 stone since July it that helps? I'm sightly taller than you. Average 2 pounds a week but stagnated over Christmas and put on a couple of pounds on holiday

JennyDarlingRIP · 11/03/2023 12:08

Yes MFP or similar I started at 1250 calories a day but I go to the gym 3 times a week now so aim for about 1450/1500. I also got a Fitbit for Christmas which had motivated me step and exercise wise

Pubesofsoberness · 11/03/2023 12:08

I'm 5"7 and started at 15.6 , took about 6 months to get down to 11.5 . Getting down from that to in the 10s took a lot longer!

100daykickupthearse · 11/03/2023 12:09

Really insightful and some amazing success stories!

I’ve had an under active thyroid for years, initially caused a spike in weight, levels controlled now but weight remains. I eat a lot. Like healthy food, like cheat food, like wine too much. So all of this needs looking at.

also very very inactive atm

I'd focus more on weight than clothes size as tpeople's weight can vary a lot, yet still be roughly the same clothes size. At size 10 I weigh 11 stone, wheres some would weigh 9 stone. I've lost 2 stone since January and am steadily losing about 2 pounds a week.

Ellaone · 11/03/2023 12:19

In September 2021 I weighed 17 stone 4, I’m 5ft 4, I’m now 8 stone 9. It’s weird as my goal was to go from a size 20 to a 12/14 , a size ten was a pipe dream, I soon learned it’s not about clothe sizing but the actual loss, I hovered at a 14/16 for ages but was still loosing and I felt great then with just another stone off I dropped to a size 8/10 - good on you for going for it but honestly don’t judge weight loss on clothes sizes ( I’m still a 16 in Zara 🙄)

Murraydeservedit · 11/03/2023 12:26

I went from a size 24 to a size 8 in 18 months.

Ten stone weight loss. I was 25 years old though so metabolism on my side! I did slimfast for 6 months, then did a combo of keto and one meal a day, which I’ve been doing for the 18 years since.

SpottedDew · 11/03/2023 12:26

I went from a size 20 to a size 14 in 9 months (16 st to 11 st).

I was wearing some size 18 or 16 at the start and at the end wearing mainly size 12 (and size 10) but honestly, in terms of true sizes, the change was from a 20 to a 14. I think it I had lost another stone I would've been a definite 12 (but buying a ten in vanity sizing shops) and I think that would've been slow going. I'm going to say at least a year.

MadameOvary81 · 11/03/2023 12:36

It took me just over two years, but I have PCOS and that makes weight-loss a bit tougher.

I went from 15s 4lbs to 9s 2lb. 1200 calorie a day diet with the odd treat day off and lots of exercise.
