Can anyone ( old enough ) remember the look & read TV series that used to be shown in schools to us in the 80's and early 90's?

The one I particularly remember was The Boy From Space, it absolutely used to scare the shit out of me as a kid.

Another was Dark Towers, pure frightening!!

And also the theme tune/starting credits of Tales of the unexpected still puts the fear of God in me to this day! 😂

I still think about those sometimes! And yes the boy from space & the thin man was v scary. Dark towers was great. I loved the cello in the theme music.

Yes! The thin man, oh my word! He sends my stomach doing backflips! Terrifying!

Dark Towers! Heebie-jeebies from the theme tune alone!

There were some really good dramas when we were kids.

I also really liked Moondial and Century Falls.

Then there were the Australian ones with The Girl from Tomorrow and Escape from Jupiter.

neerg · 10/03/2023 17:20

Was that the program with "Wordy"?

MargaretThursday · 10/03/2023 17:22

The only thing I remember was the boy in it then played Dick in the Famous Five.

GIMMER!

Geordie Racer was one as well wasn’t it? I used to love them even though some of them were pretty terrifying.

Yes, that's right and Badger Girl. There was also one about a fair ground or a fortune teller, or something like that.

I remember having to sit in the school library waiting for the big tv to be wheeled in to watch this. Definitely remember Boy from Space

manontroppo · 10/03/2023 17:32

iI loved the Girl from Tomorrow! Never heard anyone else mention it.

bugaboo218 · 10/03/2023 17:33

Yes I am old enough to remember look and read. Geordie Racer was my favourite story, but like pp Dark Towers scared me as a child.

I was also frightened a little bit of wordy who used to say word watchers in a silly voice!

AutisticLegoLover · 10/03/2023 17:36

I both loved and feared Look and Read. Dark Towers was ace.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 10/03/2023 17:39

Look and Read, now that brings back memories. The one that sticks out for me is Sky Hunter with the peregrine falcon.

Quent · 10/03/2023 17:52

I still sing the Earthwarp theme tune in my head from time to time...

I actually felt the content was a little young for me when I was shown them at primary school, but I was always happy to waste lesson time sat cross-legged in front of a TV.

WildRosie · 10/03/2023 18:10

Cloudburst is the only one I vaguely remember. I think there was a character called Mrs Green in it.

SapatSea · 10/03/2023 18:18

Most of them are on Youtube if you want to revisit your past!

Supergluerules · 10/03/2023 18:50

Remember Badger Girl and the Fairground one that we watched in primary school, the BBC website lists them all.

Children's drama tv was so good in the 80s and early 90s

Minerbee · 10/03/2023 20:02

I did revisit them once, I wonder if my 7yo would like them now actually. I think the boy from space still freaked me out a bit lol.

I loved that one, although found Charn absolutely terrifying as a small child!

kennythekangaroo · 10/03/2023 20:13

I had the whole set on dvd at one point and used to watch them with y4 classes until about 12 years ago. They were originally designed to help children struggling with reading which is why the content of some felt a little young.
The boy from space always freaked children out! My favourite was Spywatch - which was WW2 based and starred Russel Tovey. We used to take classes on a trip to Dartmoor to see the Church from Badgergirl.
