Aldi bag check

LotsOfLovexx · 05/03/2023 15:05

Has anyone else had this recently?

I was opening up my bags ready to pack and the cashier asked to see inside the bags first. Embarrassed me as never happened before and was very busy.

Made me feel like I'd done something wrong. Considering switching supermarkets if this is a new thing.

I wouldn’t switch supermarkets over it, that’s mad. It took a second of your time, surely? They’ll probably have just been told to ask after a spate of theft or something.

DevantMaJardin · 05/03/2023 15:07

You can switch supermarkets for any reason you like. If it bothers you then don't shop there again.

Pavlova31 · 05/03/2023 15:09

Think it is just a random thing. Didn't bother me at all. Over in a few seconds.

HollyLolly2023 · 05/03/2023 15:11

Yes i have been asked to see in my bags before

Shesasuperfreak · 05/03/2023 15:11

Sometimes I will use the same carrier for different shops.

For example if I buy something from Superdrug and then go Aldi with the same bag will they ask for a receipt if they see stuff inside? What if I don't have one?

Same with my granny trolley, I won't even use carriers for that. It will have multiple shops worth of groceries.

monsterradeliciosa · 05/03/2023 15:15

Yes had it before
and when I buy my £1 hair dye in home bargains they open the box to make sure I’ve not put anything inside

standard checks

says nothing about you

imagine giving a crap if someone steals from Aldi or home bargains

Do you buy stuff they have in Aldi that they also have in say Superdrugs?

I don't.

So I don't worry about it.

Incidentally I was in my local Lidl earlier and they bag checked 3 guys. All middle aged, different ethnicities and in different parts of the store. The guys were acting dodgy.

In other supermarkets in my area security target men, mainly young ones.

I have been hassled by a shop assistant in the past who didn't realise the object on my chest under my coat was my DD sleep in her baby carrier. The security guard, however could clearly see that as I walked past him to get in the store with her moving.

It's not personal, but of course supermarkets can (and should) check that customers don't steal!

It benefits all of us as they don't need to raise prices to offset the theft.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 05/03/2023 15:25

Considering switching supermarkets if this is a new thing.

You'll find many places can spot check customers. Especially if theft is increasing. Shop online if you don't want to run the risk of someone asking to look in your bag

Reddahlias · 05/03/2023 15:29

What's the problem? Unless you're hiding or stealing something, just open your bags?!

10Past10 · 05/03/2023 15:32

They asked me before I started packing, no biggy, just show them
I never thought anything of it

TimeForChanges123 · 05/03/2023 15:33

It's a new thing apparently due to theft. Nothing personal

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/03/2023 15:34

They do in my local aldi regularly. They have also put bags behind the till as so many were stealing them.

Don't blame the supermarket - blame the individuals who steal!

Reddahlias · 05/03/2023 15:35

How else can they avoid people stealing?

BertieBotts · 05/03/2023 15:38

if I buy something from Superdrug and then go Aldi with the same bag will they ask for a receipt if they see stuff inside? What if I don't have one?

If this happens just say "I bought that from Superdrug", it's hardly an unusual thing to do.

pinkpanther84 · 05/03/2023 16:13

I know someone who works in Aldi and she said they've been told to start doing this with everyone. I just leave my bags in the car and pack once I'm back at the car

Twillow · 05/03/2023 16:15

Remember the old saying if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to worry about.

DojaPhat · 05/03/2023 16:20

You sort of get used to this type of thing happening after a while. It's grating but if I took umbrage at the risk of this happening I don't think I'd shop anywhere.

fruitpastille · 05/03/2023 16:25

They sometimes ask me to lift my bags from where they are waiting in the trolley so they can see there is nothing underneath. Not a big deal. It doesn't happen in waitrose though!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 05/03/2023 16:32

Why on earth would you be embarrassed? A policy of looking in bags has got nothing to do with you

Some people do look to make their lives harder than needs be

DESGUSTING · 05/03/2023 16:35

There's been new signs up in my
Local Aldi this week regarding bags as people have been stealing.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/03/2023 16:40

Waitrose do a similar thing, as do most self service supermarkets I imagine, in that they sometimes flag you up for a random bag check. I assume it’s to check that you’ve scanned everything and aren’t nicking stuff. I don’t take offence, it’s not personal.

loopylou3030 · 05/03/2023 16:41

In France and Spain they do this all the time. Every supermarket when you go to pack you have to show them inside your bags before they scan your items. Just the way it is. They are much hotter on shop lifters and have heavy security and entrance and exit. Maybe UK is starting to go the same way with the cost of living. It's not personal I'm sure.

kierenthecommunity · 05/03/2023 16:42

Our Sainsburys now has a gate where you have to scan your receipt at the self service tills to get out.

I presume they must have had a lot of thefts to justify the expense of installing it.

it’s a slight PITA but I’ve not boycotted fhem
yet

BrilliantUsername · 05/03/2023 16:42

I would definitely have asked them to explain themselves and made them feel very uncomfortable about it.
