Aldi bag check

LotsOfLovexx · 05/03/2023 15:05

Has anyone else had this recently?

I was opening up my bags ready to pack and the cashier asked to see inside the bags first. Embarrassed me as never happened before and was very busy.

Made me feel like I'd done something wrong. Considering switching supermarkets if this is a new thing.

Our Sainsburys now has a gate where you have to scan your receipt at the self service tills to get out.

I presume they must have had a lot of thefts to justify the expense of installing it.

it’s a slight PITA but I’ve not boycotted fhem
yet

What if you didn't buy anything? Perhaps you wanted some shoes and didn't see any you liked.
You're not a prisoner I'd have gone under the barrier, I can leave when I want to, I don't need to be aloud out.

louise5754 · 05/03/2023 16:45

Everyone seems to understand so it's obviously just me that doesn't.

Do you mean when you get out your empty bags from your handbag? Surely they would know you haven't stolen anything then put it back in your carrier bag and into your handbag and to get it out again?

I would definitely have asked them to explain themselves and made them feel very uncomfortable about it.

😂

It's not that deep

Go out the main door presumably. You don’t have to exit through the self service tills if you’re empty handed do you?

Good luck ducking under the gate, it’s about three inches from the floor 😉

I mean in theory you could ring through your shopping, go back into the main shop and exit this way. Can’t imagine anyone physically restraining you.

But what an overreaction, prisoner my arse 😂

That would just make you seem stupid

Surely its prefectly obvious why a shop would want to make sure customers arent stealing things by hiding them in their bags

Why would the staff be uncomfortable about a head office policy?

But go ahead, give everyone else in the queues a laugh

Imnoonesfool · 05/03/2023 16:55

My 16 yr old son works at Aldi and he has to check under trollies and in bags and they are finding soooooo much stuff hidden
if it’s any consolation he feels just as uncomfortable asking to look

Carpediem15 · 05/03/2023 16:59

I have been checked at the self serve till in M and S a few times recently and had to unpack my own trolley to let them check.
Local Aldi had 40 of the basket on wheels about 6 months ago and now they have 2 and have notices at all the tills and on the doors not to take them outside and think they now have them alarmed.

neitherofthem · 05/03/2023 17:04

This has never been asked of me, and I shop in Aldi a lot. Maybe your branch has suffered a lot of shoplifting just lately. Don't let it bother you, the staff are just doing the job they have been asked to do.

It's definitetly a thing, if you google it there are lots of links, including this one

Wow, so people really do steal a lot?

Costco has always checked people's trolleys, bags and receipts when leaving.

Oh I don't know, it's got an ever so slightly Nietzschean feel to it.

We have a Co-op and a Tesco Express near us, and in both shops I’ve gone to a self service till, and there’s a total to pay, where someone has rung through their stuff then effed off without actually paying. And this has happened more than once.

And I live in a reasonably affluent area too

cemma · 05/03/2023 17:22

My local Aldi asks everyone with bags in their trolley to lift them up before packing. Standard practice here. Must be a way people have tried stealing? I'm not bothered by it

Tabitha888 · 05/03/2023 17:24

No need to take it so personally

LotsOfLovexx · 05/03/2023 17:25

It felt a bit targeted to me as the few people in front had not been asked to show their bags. Including a woman with multiple bottles of drink who handed one over and said there's 5 more under the pram Confused.

I wonder what happens if I refuse to show the bags?

OP posts:
ProfessionalWeirdo · 05/03/2023 17:32

It's never happened to me in the UK, but it's common practice in supermarkets in France.

DojaPhat · 05/03/2023 17:40

I wonder what happens if I refuse to show the bags?

They might say they'll call the police but even then doubt the police would be interested.

MaidOfSteel · 05/03/2023 17:44

It hasn't happened to me or my husband as yet and I don't think I'd be happy if it did. I get how you feel, OP.

Oh yes, stick it to the big man by humiliating the person on min wage who's just doing their job.

I genuinely can't understand this, say the policy is to look in the bags of every 5th person who goes through the checkout on what grounds could you possibly not be happy? Can you explain why?

Like a PP says costo check the trolley and receipt of every single shopper and no one bats an eyelid, why would they?

I don't blame them.

Two of my local Asda stores have moved their baskets as people have clearly been stealing them.

One Lidl now has no trolleys that children can push. My DD was so upset. I explained to her that people are clearly taking them out the store.

Aldi workers earn more than minimum wage.

But the principle is the same.

They can ban you from the store. It's private property after all.

No police needed unless you turn up within the next 3 months and they still remember you.

I think it’s more likely they’d refuse to serve you. But whether they’d see that through if you’ve two weeks worth of shopping with a huge queue behind you, who knows?

DojaPhat · 05/03/2023 17:56

I misread, I assumed refusing to show the bags after you've paid, not before because then surely you'd just leave the store if you've found it that much of a personal insult.
