I like a friend to many is a friend to none

Through the door, there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same
Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days

Mary Hopkin 'Those Were the Days'

This song from my 15th year is almost unbearably nostalgic now at 68

"Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine.

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images and when we kiss
They're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God himself did make us
Into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

In case you didn’t know, the Iron and Wine version is a cover and the original is by The Postal Service (both versions great and worth checking out!)

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop

You may be mocking, but the lyrics of the verse of MMMBOP are actually very poetic:

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh, so hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care?

Pink Floyd, Shine On You Crazy Diamond:

Remember when you were young
You shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there’s a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze,
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

Most of the classic song lyrics were between the 1950's through 1980s.

after that it's been downhill all the way.

You take away
the breath I was keeping for the sunrise

The first time ever I saw your face I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave

A great protest song by Del Amitri - all about the break down of society through apathy, the scourge of capitalism, "While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing" is stark ....

Post office clerks put up signs saying "Position Closed"
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
And janitors padlock the gates for security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink while the married ones turn on a chat show
And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

"Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore"
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead and every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds like the doped white mice in the college lab

And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the car park and no one would care
Closed-circuit cameras in department stores
Shoot the same movie every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
And bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While "Angry from Manchester" writes to complain about all the repeats on TV
Computer terminals report some gains in the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing

And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Wait a minute baby
Stay with me a while
Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire

Drowning
In the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
When you build your house
Then call me home

And he was just like
A great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match
He was singing

And undoing
And undoing
Ooh, the laces
Undoing the laces

Said Sara
You're the poet in my heart
Never change
Never stop
But now it's gone
It doesn't matter what for
But when you build your house
Oh, then call me home

Hold on
The night is coming
And the starling flew for days
I'd stay at home at night
All the time

I'd go anywhere
Anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I'm there
Yeah
Ask me and I'm there
'Cause I care

In the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it's gone
They say it doesn't matter anymore
If you build your house
Then please, call me home

Sara
You're the poet in my heart
Never change, and don't you ever stop
Now it's gone
No it doesn't matter anymore
When you build your house
I'll come by

There's a heartbeat
And it never really died (Ah)
Never really died (Sara, ah)
Would you swallow all your pride?
Would you swallow all your pride?
All I ever wanted

Redemption - Frank Turner

I was walking home to my house through the snow from the station
When the Springsteen came clear in my headphones with a pertinent question
Oh is love really real and can any of us hope for redemption?
Or are we all merely biding our time down to lonely conclusions?
Darling let me take your hand as I talk you through this
How loneliness edged into deep seeded psychosis
Lying away in crowded hotel rooms focused on tape hiss
With my feelings laid clear on the ceiling
I don't think I can do this
I don't think I can do this

Well I tried so hard to not turn into my father
But if I only ever skip all his choices will I ever choose better?
Oh the sad truth is the grass it will always seem greener
So I left you alone in a restaurant in London in winter
You deserved better

Adam Trask is on my back and in my ears
And the sound comes clear and brings the awful truth
That I can't stand what I've done to you
And it's written clear in my diary
Today should have been our anniversary
And I'm far way and I'm far apart
And you're back home with a broken heart
And loves is real and I can't escape
I only ever have myself to blame

These failures shift and shake me in the night
Like a fever I can't break try as I might
Wake me darling I need you take me home
But I know in the end redemption is mine, and mine alone

So if each of us is made up of a tally of mistakes and successes
Then my hour in that restaurant makes my score less than impressive
But each can be redeemed with the courage with which he confesses
So darling I miss you, your music and your musk and your kisses
I don't think I can do this

Ok just looked up what it means and it is a bit like I suspected, here is a Bjorne talking about it

’It was only an atmosphere I was trying to describe. The only thing I was doing consciously, that was mixing together pure innocence and pure... well, not danger, but something, you know, evil. Evil in an unreal way."

Though I think it does convey an underlying danger, and underlying evil. I guess it’s a bit like that scene in ConAir with the little girl in the desert innocently playing at tea party with the convicted paedophile.

Shock I knew I shouldn’t Google the lyrics to Birthday! I missed the whole 5 years old bit.

Beautiful thread.

Marc Cohn - Olana

They say my final masterpiece
Was this house upon the hill
High above the great and mighty river
My hand could not hold the brushes
Yes I guess I lost my will
And you can't keep painting paradise forever
Oh forever

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them, but they were only satellites.

What I dream I had
Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline of smoky Burgundy
Softer than the rain…

(pretty much every song written by Paul Simon is pure poetry)

From: Northern Skies - I am Kloot

Where did you go on that big black night?
Did you take the coast road back through your life?
See the sand, the moon, the stars that shine the light and say, well
They'll do all right for me

Riapia · 06/03/2023 07:48

You see me on the street
you always act surprised
you say how are you good luck
but you don’t mean it
you know as well as me
you’d rather see me paralysed
why don’t you just come out once and scream it.

Bob Dylan.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 06/03/2023 17:39

I don't know
What all of this means
If you are not here with me
And I am lost
When we are apart
There's a hole in my heart
That light passes through
And the pattern it creates
Is the shape of the absence of you

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 06/03/2023 17:41

Odysseus wasn't strong enough
To endure the siren song and so
He made his sailors tie him to a mast
And Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights
And he stood his ground and fought his fight
And the devil tried but couldn't break his fast
If this is true
The devil should've offered him you
Goddammit

Oh, thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You'll know

The killer awoke before dawn
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall...

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you always know
As long as one and one makes two
There will never be a father loves his daughter more than I love you.

I have a book of Paul Simon lyrics. Glorious stuff.
