I like a friend to many is a friend to none

Also the arctic monkeys and 'dry your eyes' by the streets.
There are so many.

@ChampagneCommunist Paul Simon is a genius.

You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me
It’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea
But let’s not talk of distances, or things we can’t untie
Your eyes are soft with sorrow
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye

Your name keeps running around my brain
You're cocaine, you're gradually driving me insane
You're sending me up in flames, you're propane
You're running around my brain
You're running around my brain

I can't eat I can't sleep, you're a hole and I'm in way too deep
I'm too tense I'm making no sense
I'm a violin string and you keep on turning me higher
'Cause my heart's on fire

And it feels so good
Yeah it feels so good
And it feels so good
Yeah it feels
So good

Selena gomez - lose you to love me

when you listen to the words, it’s just beautiful and bittersweet.

thelengthspeoplegoto · 04/03/2023 23:44

Sonny sits by his window and thinks to himself, how strange that some rooms are like cages.
Sonny's year book from high school is down from the shelf, as he idly thumbs through the pages.
Some have died, some have fled from themselves, or struggled from here to get there.
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls, runs his hands through his thinning brown hair.

There's no place I call the height

There's no way in a mean street

There's no happy medium

There's no in between

So do your searching, until you're down

Then realise, you're on you're home ground

Sittin' in a white room dreaming of a life
You have got me thinking, what is paradise?

Should I take an ocean drive, coolin' from the sun

Silver screen got me thinking this is how it should be done

handsoffate · 04/03/2023 23:45

Strung out below a necklace of carnival lights
Cold moon, held on the crest of the night
I'm too tired to fight
So now we're passing strangers, at single tables
Still trying to get over
Still trying to write love songs for passing strangers

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 04/03/2023 23:46

And what if God's dead?
We must have done something wrong
This dark facade ends
We're independent from someone
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to meet you,

Meet you
Soon
We write suggestions
Suggesting fading to silence
And that must please you
My mirror's tarnished with no-help
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to meet you,

Meet you
Soon
Turn out these eyes
Wipe off my face
Erase me
Replay the end
It's all just show
Erase you
I need to

I need to

I need to
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to leave you,

Leave you
Leave you,

Leave you soon

"Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine.

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images and when we kiss
They're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God himself did make us
Into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

Look, black is beautiful, black is excellent
Black is pain, black is joy, black is evident
It's workin' twice as hard as the people you know you're better than
'Cause you need to do double what they do so you can level them
Black is so much deeper than just African-American
Our heritage been severed, you never got to experiment
With family trees, 'cause they teach you 'bout famine and greed
And show you pictures of our fam on their knees
Tell us we used to be barbaric, we had actual queens
Black is watchin' child soldiers gettin' killed by other children
Feelin' sick, like, "Oh shit, this could have happened to me"
Your mummy watchin' tellin' stories 'bout your dad and your niece
The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice
A kid dies, the blacker the killer, the sweeter the news
And if he's white you give him a chance, he's ill and confused
If he's black he's probably armed, you see him and shoot
Look, black is growin' up around the barbershop
Mummy sayin', "Stay away from trouble, you're in yard a lot"
Studying for ages, appreciatin' the chance you got
'Cause black is in your blood, and you ain't even got the heart to stop
Black is steppin' in for your mother because your father's gone
And standin' by your children when you haven't proven karma wrong
Black is doin' all of the above then goin' corner shoppin'
Tryna help a lady cross the road to have her walkin' off
Black is growin' up around your family and makin' it
Then being forced to leave the place you love because there's hate in it
People say you fake the shit, never stayed to change the shit
But black is bein' jealous, you'd be dead if you had stayed in it
Black is strugglin' to find your history or trace the shit
You don't know the truth about your race 'cause they erasin' it
Black has got a sour fuckin' flavour, here's a taste of it
But black is all I know, there ain't a thing that I would change in it
Look, black ain't just a single fuckin' colour, man there's shades to it
Her hair's straight and thick but mine's got waves in it
Black is not divisive, they been lyin' and I hate the shit
Black has never been a competition, we don't make this shit
Black is deadly
Black is when you're freezin' in your home and you can't get sleep but never feelin' empty
'Cause you got 20 cousins in your country living stress-free
Walkin' for their water, daughter wrapped inside a bed sheet
Black is distant
It's representin' countries that never even existed while your grandmother was livin'
Black is my Ghanaian brother readin' into scriptures
Doin' research on his lineage, findin' out that he's Egyptian
Black is people namin' your countries on what they trade most
Coast of Ivory, Gold Coast, and the Grain Coast
But most importantly to show how deep all this pain goes
West Africa, Benin, they called it slave coast
Black is so confusin', 'cause the culture? They're in love with it
They take our features when they want and have their fun with it
Never seem to help with all the things we know would come with it
Loud in our laughter, silent in our sufferin'
Black is bein' strong inside and facing defeat
Poverty made me a beast, I battled the law in the streets
We all struggled, but your struggle ain't a struggle like me
Well how could it be when your people gave us the odds that we beat?
I mean, fuckin' hell, what about our brothers that are stuck in jail?
That couldn't bust a bell, they held a bird and gotta live with it
Black is bein' guilty until proven that you're innocent
Black is sayin', "Free my fucking niggas stuck inside in prison cells"
They think it's funny, we ain't got nothin' to say to them
Unconditional love is strange to them; it's amazin' 'em
Black is like the sweetest fuckin' flavour, here's a taste of it
But black is all I know, there ain't a thing that I would change in it

Well, I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well, you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes, the girl on the half-shell
Could keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
'Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes, I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

Couldn't pick any particular verse as they're all necessary for Baez's description of Dylan.

Paul Simon

One and one-half wandering Jews
Returned to their natural coasts
To resume old acquaintances
Step out occasionally
And speculate who had been damaged the most
Easy time will determine if these consolations
Will be their reward
The arc of a love affair

Waiting to be restored
You take two bodies and you twirl them into one
Their hearts and their bones

Annie’s Song - John Denver

You fill up my senses
like a night in a forest
like the mountains in springtime
like a walk in the rain
like a storm in the desert
like a sleepy blue ocean
you fill up my senses
come fill me again

Come, let me love you
let me give my life to you
let me drown in your laughter
let me die in your arms
let me lay down beside you
let me always be with you
come, let me love you
Come love me again

When you knew that it was over, you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and endless skies, my love
To the dark and empty skies
The first time ever i kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command
The first time i ever lay with you]
And felt you heart so close to mine
And i knew our joy would fill the world
And would last till the and of time, my love
It would last till the end of time
The first time ever i saw your face
Your face, your face

Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day 'til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure, and then
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through time with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through time with

Every Frightened Rabbit song if you like your poetry dark.
I spent a long time trying to choose one example and my iPad hates to copy and paste between tabs.

Things

Here is the evidence of human existence
A splitting bin bag next to two damp boxes
And I cannot find a name for them
They hardly show that I have lived
And the dust it settles on these things, displays my age again
Like a new skin made from old skin that has barely been lived in

I didn't need these things I didn't need them
Pointless artefacts from a mediocre past
So I shed my clothes, I shed my flesh down to the bone and burned the rest
I didn't need these things I didn't need them
Took them all to bits, turned them outside in
And I left them on the floor and ran for dear life through the door

The useless objects, the gathered a storm of shit
A dim and silent shedful of your life's supplies
When all you need's a coffin and your Sunday best to smarten up the end
At the front gate, what a reward awaits?
One bite of loaf from a holy ghost
An eternity of suffering the company of all those Christian men

I didn't need these things I didn't need them
Pointless artefacts from a mediocre past
So I shed my clothes, I shed my flesh down to the bone and burned the rest
I didn't need these things I didn't need them
Took them all to bits, turned them outside in
And I left them on the floor and ran for dear life through the door

I’ll never need these things, never need them
It's just you I need
You, my human heat
For the things are only things and nothing brings me like you bring me
I'll never need these things I'll never need them
Never going back
So we can drop the past
And we'll leave it on the floor and run for dear life through the door

Great Expectations - The Gaslight Anthem

Mary, this station is playing every sad song
I remember like we were alive
I heard and sung them all from inside of these walls
In a prison cell, where we spent those nights

And they burned up the diner where I always used to find her
Licking young boys' blood from her claws
And I learned about the blues from this kitten I knew
Her hair was raven and her heart was like a tomb

My heart's like a wound

And I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife
Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you
I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life
Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn't you?

Mary, I worried and stalled every night of my life
Better safe than making the party
And I never had a good time, I sat by my bedside
With papers and poetry about Estella

With great expectations
We had the greatest of expectations

Clawdy · 05/03/2023 12:16

But even in December
I remember
Her touch
Her smile
And for a little while
She loves me
And once again it's Paris
Paris on a Sunday
And the month is May.
("When Joanna Loved Me" - Scott Walker)
