Hi. My daughter needs some info on what teen boys are currently into for a school project, but we don't know any!! Can anyone help? Stuff like TV programmes, colours, clothes, food, hobbies, books, computer games etc. thank you!

I teach teenage boys. Their tastes are as varied as those belonging to teenage girls. And we do them a disservice by describing them as a homogeneous mass.

She needs to narrow down the purpose of her research and consider her methods to match what she's trying to find out.

stuckasastuckthing · 04/03/2023 15:23

I know they don't all like the same things - just looking for some suggestions of things some like.

For context, my 11 year old DD has a homework task to design a bedroom for a teen boy. We don't know any teen (or tween) boys so looking for some ideas!

15yo DS: Discord, PG, certain videos

football; any other sport they do themselves
food: pizza, chips, hot chocolate
making things

We will enjoy watching Clarkson's farm together sometime soon. He liked Traitors and thought the Rock scenes in Everything Everywhere All at Once were pure genius.

18yo was enjoying telling me he likes to watch looney conspiracy videos at 2x nominal speed & googling all their claims to see what's wrong with them

Bed, lamp, desk, office, chair, bookcase, bin, wardrobe and drawers. Just a normal bedroom with a space to study.

PurplePositivity · 04/03/2023 15:31

Going by my teenage DS's - a desk, knackered chair, computer, several screens, wires, bed (unmade), a million trainers, floordrobe, half the crockery and glasses from the kitchen & blind permanently down!

dementedpixie · 04/03/2023 15:33

Ds has a bed, wardrobe, bookshelf, bedside cabinet with light and alarm clock, laundry basket, floor standing fan. He reads books so there's a few lying about. He has no posters on the wall.

Haha. So true. I just did a bedroom makeover for my DD - she was really involved, she put together Pinterest boards etc. I offered to do the same for my DS who just looked at me as if I was from Mars and told me he liked it just to say it was (smelling like a badger set) and that I wasn’t under any circumstances to come in and tidy it. When I was last allowed to decorate it (he was 8) it was done in grey, blue and red with a star theme.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/03/2023 15:34

She could add a laundry chute? A useful addition to any teenager's room.

dementedpixie · 04/03/2023 15:36

He goes to the gym, lives in shorts and tshirts when not at school. Plays on a laptop while multitasking with his phone and maybe a tablet too! Likes protein drinks and yoghurt and has recently discovered a taste for curry after his beige food phase

What a strange homework assignment for an 11-year-old girl! Fine if she has a teen DB, bloody difficult if not.

My teen DS's bedroom is dark - he loves to sleep! So blackout-lined dark curtains. He has a strip of coloured LED lights round the walls. Most of what he's into is digital so it's not in his bedroom, but he a bookshelf and a range of books from atlases and encyclopedias to Alex Rider, Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. He has a huge beanbag for reading and chilling on. Ear pods, phone, alarm clock, trophies he's won for sports, a couple of signed photos of football and rugby players on his wall, a framed photo of him and his DB meeting Darth Vader at Disneyland, Star Wars toys. Other DS has an electric guitar and an amp in his room and a Jurassic Park poster. Does that help?

Food. They like food! Mini fridge would be a winner I think!

Mine is 15 and has all the things mentioned by others above, desk, console etc. He'd love space to workout in and also well-located power points to charge his phone etc!

Choccyoclocky · 04/03/2023 15:41

DS11 - football and xbox mad.

He has a large bookshelf full of books (loves reading), desk, his bed, TV on the wall and xbox on shelf underneath.

My teen DS currently obsessed with Stussy hoodies (skater wear), Jordan air retro looking trainers, tracksuits. Longish hair… at home shorts and T shirts.
reads a lot, listens to music a lot, plays music in bands, loves football both watching and playing but recently has also discovered basketball too.
I reckon what is “cool” is driven by their particular social group like his lot all wear the same black over priced puffer jackets this season (north face). It will be something different in one or two years.
He suddenly also likes old school French hip hop which came from a teacher he likes..

OnMyWayToSenility · 04/03/2023 15:50

Have a look at ikea website they have some great boys bedroom inspiration.

Or just do a room covered in debris old plate, cups and socks 🤣 (joking but serious) my teen boys rooms are really gross

Intergalacticcatharsis · 04/03/2023 15:50

Yes, mine is tidy too and uses products for his hair and scents… fitness/sports and music and computer games are his thing

Charley50 · 04/03/2023 15:52

Weird homework. Is it a mixed school? Are the boys designing a girl's room? Lots of opportunity to entrench stereotypes, or to reject them, I suppose.
I'd go on ikea or Pinterest and use ideas from there.

Tilllly · 04/03/2023 15:54

Teen girls... 😉

Maybe she could design a short questionnaire and circulate it?

lovem · 04/03/2023 15:54

What on earth kind of project is that? That can't be real.

BertieBotts · 04/03/2023 15:55

Do you have a local Ikea or other furniture shop? I would go there and have a look for inspiration. Take pictures and you'll see some different themes that will be helpful.

My teenager likes manga (reading) and artwork from them and anime (Japanese cartoons) so figurines from those too.

TV/computer/console are common pastimes and he has those. Also a musical instrument - in his case a keyboard. Space to charge his phone and headphones.

They tend to like dark, muted colours possibly with a bold accent colour like red or cyan.

He is really into those LED neon type lights and has some of those too. And a desk - space to do homework - and space to hang out with mates. He has sleepovers fairly regularly.

He's not into sports (some teenagers might be) but he has a skateboard and a football.

Easy to clean is important for him as he doesn't want to spend ages getting everything into a perfect place, he just likes to be able to sling everything into a box, drawer, pile etc and be done.

evtheria · 04/03/2023 16:01

My 15 yr old nephew likes:

  • Lego
  • skateboarding
  • puzzle toys
  • engineering
  • cartoons that are like Beavis & Butthead etc
  • juggling
  • gaming on his mobile phone
AKAsomeonelse · 04/03/2023 16:07

My 16 year old DS is into super cars, F1 and karting. The walls of his room are covered in F1 posters. He likes collecting Pop Funkos and has shelves with those on. He has a PS5 and a gaming chair in his room but I’ve noticed since he’s turned 16 he doesn’t game as much (nor do his friends). He prefers playing on his phone. He watches a lot of YouTube and follows people like KSI, Sidemen, and Lando Norris. He likes programmes such as Drive to Survive, Clarksons Farm, Outerbanks.

AKAsomeonelse · 04/03/2023 16:08

Oh he also goes to the gym a lot!

RunTowardsTheLight · 04/03/2023 16:11

My teen DSs like
Football
Formula One
FIFA on the xbox
Youtubers Dude Perfect
Nike joggers and Quiksilver T shirts
Taskmaster

swallowedAfly · 04/03/2023 16:13

LED lights around the walls with a range of settings to choose from. Gaming chair.

My teen's room sounds just like PurplePixie's but with USB lights and a secret compartment for hiding all the teaspoons in.
