Did anyone else attend a safety day/event as a child?

In primary school we attended a safety event via the school. They had different stations set up around the building, inside and outside. For the first part we were told to walk along a path and not look back and a man came running screaming and grabbed one of us.

Others included electricity substations, fires, a bus, a room that was set up like a club or disco with food and tictacs in bowls, that we weren't supposed to eat, but many did. I think there was another station or two but I can't remember what they were.

Did anyone else attend anything like this?

Yes! Attended crucial crew as a kid. Was all about safety. I think they still do in some areas

Girasoli · 03/03/2023 19:27

No but that's sounds amazing/terrifying. My 6 year old would love it.

jizzlord · 03/03/2023 19:28

Yeah we had those - they also taught us how to treat burns and cuts and had some of us make fake wounds for others to treat.

We learnt bandages and slings etc and how to improvise splints and crutches and what to do if electrocuted or in quick sand (!) etc. it was basically all the 70s infomercials in real life and what to do if people got into difficulty.

Roseandrose20 · 03/03/2023 19:28

I went to one called hazard alley

PuttingDownRoots · 03/03/2023 19:28

Did something like that in ge 90s.

As did my daughter last year. (In year 6)

Aria2015 · 03/03/2023 19:29

Yes, my group happily got in a stranger's car lol! None of us suspected a thing... lambs to the slaughter! Mind you, I never forgot it and I think it would have really made me less likely to do it in real life, which is a good thing!!

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 03/03/2023 19:30

Yes! I think they called ours the ‘Safety Carousel’.

The only thing about it that really sticks in my mind is escaping out of the faked bedroom window from a fire. When you got through the window, you walked down mini flight of stairs 😂

SafetyFirstNow · 03/03/2023 19:37

Thanks all. I love all the different names for these events. Ours was called SKIS(Safe Kids in Strathkelvin). Now, after a county name change it'd be called SKIED.

I love that so many of us attended these and that they're still going. I remember it being quite a fun day out. I wish I could remember exactly where it took place though.

I wonder if you were in Herts OP

Custardbanana · 03/03/2023 19:41

Yes I remember the car fire fires and bags of white powder lying around to supposedly look like drugs.

Was it the child safety centre in Pollok? I went to that one. The nightclub sounds the same.

ToLongToCharge · 03/03/2023 19:42

Yep ! Really loved it

Icannoteven · 03/03/2023 19:45

Yes. We went to crucial crew, which was so much fun and also really unformative.

Unfortunately it also gave me life long anxiety about house fires!

It may have been. I can't remember exactly though I know there was nearby woodland or at least a park because we walked along a long narrow woodland path for the first station.

I'm in Scotland but it sounds like they had a very similar setup in different parts of the U.K.

Yes at the local police station in Year 5 or 6? 2000/2001 ish. They simulated a fire in a smokey room where we all had to crawl out. A faux lake where we learned about Wiles disease

We all happily went off with the man who wanted to show us his new car 🤦‍♂️

We went to Hazard Alley too. It’s still going.

Hidingawaytoday · 03/03/2023 20:03

Yes, in primary school! All I remember, though, is being outside and someone coming up to say they worked for the local paper, and would we pose for a photo for a story they were doing on the day... it was a test to see what we'd do, having had a stranger danger session earlier in the day. I can't remember if we passed or not. There might have been a bit about what to do in a fire too.

Thinkbiglittleone · 03/03/2023 20:06

When I Just started high school, I did a little course with the police, they had us sat in a room, someone ran in, shouting, with a weapon and grabbed a handbag off the table and ran out. We had to describe him. Very bizzare, I showed us how shock can effect your memory.

thaisweetchill · 03/03/2023 20:08

Yes crucial crew in year 6.

evemillbank · 03/03/2023 20:20

No but my dad set these up in our house when we were kids . It was great fun!

Numbersarefun · 03/03/2023 20:23

I used to always take my Y6 class to Crucial Crew.

User1435 · 03/03/2023 20:27

We did crucial crew too! Such a great idea for scaring kids straight, I still remember loads of it 30 years on!

BlackeyedSusan · 03/03/2023 20:28

No, we were just scared shirtless by Charlie.

CoodleMoodle · 03/03/2023 20:32

Yes, we did this too! In Year 6. I think it was called Young Citizens or something. We had to go through it in groups of 3, and my group did the best and we got a medal each. I have no idea how we won because we stopped to talk to the man asking for help loading his car, and apparently we all would've died in the house fire/smokey room... everyone else must've been terrible for us to win!
