Why is it so hard to get fruit and salad?

Is it my area or a widespread thing?

I'm trying to order a small same-day delivery so I have lunches and breakfasts for today and tomorrow until I can do a big shop.

Morrisons have suspended deliveries on Uber due to low stock. Tesco is sold out of all varieties of tomatoes, pineapples and grapes and also don't have the yogurts I like. Asda has sold out of lettuce, cucumber, and grapes. Iceland have sold out of lettuce and cucumbers.

It was the same last time I tried to order food online. What's going on?

I did a huge fruit and veg haul yesterday… involving Waitrose and Sainsbury .

All in stock

Sally2791 · 21/02/2023 05:47

Brexit

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2023 05:49

Bad weather in Spain is to blame for a lot of the salad shortages.

Sparklfairy · 21/02/2023 05:50

This was Aldi yesterday. Its not even scarce stock where you have to pay more for on the vine sun ripened tomatoes as that's all they have, there's nothing at all!

No spinach in aldi for several weeks

ItWillWash · 21/02/2023 05:56

That would explain it. It's odd they say independents will be harder hit. My tiny, local grocer has everything but I don't really have time to go. I might sneak out after the morning meeting and hope no one misses me.

It's a mixture of cold weather harming crops and Brexit (msking it difficult to source from elsewhere at short notice).

ByeByeMr · 21/02/2023 07:17

I don't know but I couldn't get cucumber in Morrisons at the weekend but managed to get everything else.

TheDead · 21/02/2023 07:18

I'm in ireland & there's absolutely no shortages of fruit or veg where I am apart from M&S & their stock has been v unreliable for ages now.

I assume its a Brexit thing

N0tfinished · 21/02/2023 07:20

You're all being gaslit, no shortages here at all (Ireland). I was in our local Aldi, fully stocked with normal varieties of tomatoes, salads in bags and whole heads. Normal fruit & veg in stock. Same in our local convenience store. It's Brexit.

Radiatorvalves · 21/02/2023 07:22

I was in France last week. All fully stocked. It’s Brexit. The number of lorries at the channel was staggering.

AuntieMarys · 21/02/2023 07:25

I got all my usual fruit and veg in Aldi/ Sainsbury's yesterday. No empty shelves.
There were no eggs though

msbevvy · 21/02/2023 07:25

I haven't noticed any shortage at all in our part of London. I got an online Amazon grocery delivery yesterday and everything was in stock. There are even shops around here with really good tomatoes for sale by the box which is a new one on me.

TheDead · 21/02/2023 07:26

No shortages of eggs here either!
That's awful that you have empty supermarket shelves.

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/02/2023 07:27

No Cucumber, Tomatoes or Peppers in Tesco here yesterday. They had plenty of lettuce and fruits though

liveforsummer · 21/02/2023 07:28

Yep having the same issue. Aldi had no salad yesterday- nothing neither bagged or whole lettuce. There was one pack of sugar snap peas lingering in one of the back boxes you have to tip toe to reach. The only thing there was loads of was bananas.

JamSandle · 21/02/2023 07:28

No shortages on fruit, veg or eggs where I am (South).

SunnySomer · 21/02/2023 07:29

Farming Today this morning said it was weather in Spain’s principal growing area and that if the produce hasn’t grown/ripened then however much a buyer is prepared to pay, they can’t have it because it doesn’t exist.
Im inclined to believe this as I’ve never heard a pro-Brexit piece on there

ivykaty44 · 21/02/2023 07:31

europe Supplies gone
british supplies disappeared

🤔

Freysimo · 21/02/2023 07:31

I live in West Wales, so pretty much out on a limb. Plenty of fruit and veg in our supermarkets, but our area voted for Brexit, so maybe we're getting preferential treatment?!

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2023 07:31

You're all being gaslit,

So the weather in Spain has been glorious?

Meandfour · 21/02/2023 07:36

No shortages at all here in Derbyshire.

Don't know anything about that, I'm assuming EU customers are being supplied first from the stocks that are available? Every place I was in yesterday was fully stocked.

Article on BBC Radio 4 last night -poor weather in Spain -too hot, then a cold snap -affecting tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Poor weather affecting ferries from Morocco.
