Why is it so hard to get fruit and salad?

Is it my area or a widespread thing?

I'm trying to order a small same-day delivery so I have lunches and breakfasts for today and tomorrow until I can do a big shop.

Morrisons have suspended deliveries on Uber due to low stock. Tesco is sold out of all varieties of tomatoes, pineapples and grapes and also don't have the yogurts I like. Asda has sold out of lettuce, cucumber, and grapes. Iceland have sold out of lettuce and cucumbers.

It was the same last time I tried to order food online. What's going on?

@leithreas Lying?? I definitely am not. I don't customarily lie, especially about something like this. I was in 2 supermarkets yesterday, Aldi, & SuperValu and also a local Centra. I saw fully stocked shelves. I live in a small market town in the west.

AngryPrincess · 21/02/2023 23:48

Brexit.
Ireland is fine.

TheDead · 22/02/2023 00:19

@leithreas I'm in ireland too & today I was in dunnes & the shelves were full, they had tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers , salad leaves & strawberries galore. I know because I bought some along with a cooked chicken & had a delicious chicken salad for dinner!

And I was in dunnes at 6.30pm!

Don't know where you are in the country but it's not my experience at all

From February the Tories massively increased the fine for lorries being found with clandestine immigrants, further disincentivising hauliers from serving the UK. So the difficulty in buying fresh produce has yet again increased to make a few xenophobes happy.
Enjoy your sovereignty salads.

Are you seriously saying we should allow more immigrants to risk their lives in lorry containers just so we can have more veg?

Sarahcoggles · 22/02/2023 00:38

Brexit was years ago. Why would that explain what's happening now?
It's basically bad harvest = media reporting = idiots panic buying veg that'll go off before they can eat it = shelves empty

They had a whole segment on rte radio 1 about it today. Whether you bought things today or not it's still a thing. I'm in the West and only shop in aldi but it is definitely showing here like I said earlier for about 3 days the super 6 fruit and veg just consisted of a pile turnips. Some days I can get things but it is definitely noticeable.

Grand so. Rte are obviously 'gaslighting' their listeners too. Must be in cahoots with the Brits 😂

notangelinajolie · 22/02/2023 01:37

The choice in some (but not all in my experience) shops may be limited but there is always some kind of fruit ,veg or salad you can buy. Seriously, nobody is going to starve. If there are no King Edwards - get Maris Piper.
Scaremongering by the media at its worst.

Looks like the Irish Times are in on the conspiracy as well.

Supermarkets fully stocked with eggs and fresh salad in Denmark. It's brexit, don't believe the twaddle about the weather.

newstart1234 · 22/02/2023 04:43

After all this time, if people don't know why brexit might disrupt precarious just in time supply lines, i don't think there is any point trying to explain. But it is well researched and yes it's a consequence of brexit. Despite happening a number of years ago we are still living with the consequences and will do so for years to come. That was actually the point, it's just the fibbers in the leave campaign said it would be good consequences not bad ones.

newstart1234 · 22/02/2023 04:47

And yes, Ireland may have shortages, that doesn't mean brexit won't disrupt supply lines. They are not mutually exclusive. And as for a pp saying that Ireland has fewer people so less likely to run out... god where to start 😯

I did a huge fruit and veg haul yesterday… involving Waitrose and Sainsbury .

All in stock

Ah, this must be the problem 😜

I definitely couldn't have any type of salad with our pasta last night - nothing with leaves available at all, no cucumber, peppers or tomatoes. I could have had potatoes or a wilted pack of green beans so yes, not going to starve but it was salad I wanted that I've tried 3 days in a row to get

Witsendwilly · 22/02/2023 05:23

Hopefully this might be the start of a move away from people expecting non seasonal food shipped fresh (ish) from other countries.

The environmental benefit will be huge if so, plus the economic benefit of our farmers are able to adapt and get people back to what’s in season and relatively local.

No cheap peppers in the UK in winter!!! Shocker 😂

liveforsummer · 22/02/2023 05:31

No cheap peppers in the UK in winter!!! Shocker

Where did I say I wanted them to be cheap? And why the laughing face, because they are usually available to buy in February?!

hay5689 · 22/02/2023 06:10

Our stock levels were good until the media started scaremongering and suddenly tomatoes and peppers are essential items that everyone needs. The reason stock levels are better in France and Ireland is because customers are not being scared by shortages. The reason restrictions are on is because of people being selfish and buying too much. There's always problems sourcing items in retail, it's only when the media gets wind of it the problem really starts.

Crumpetdisappointment · 22/02/2023 06:38

it is not scaremongering
it is true, and has been for a while
and since when could people stockpile tomatoes.
they are not look loo paper

i heard about the tomato issue weeks ago

Crumpetdisappointment · 22/02/2023 06:39

i also heard about the cucumber issue before chrsitmas,
i dont think a lack of cucumbers is an issue, in the winter particularly

TheClitterati · 22/02/2023 06:56

Our Lidl had hardly any vege & not much better on the fruit when I shopped on Sunday.

I topped up tomato, broccoli & cauliflower at Morrisons yesterday. I guess it depends how close to the delivery you are there.

Tomato supply has been dodgy for a few weeks. I. Haven't noticed any other issues here (se)

QuentininQuarantino · 22/02/2023 07:00

I also live in Spain and we have no shortages (except I can never find pak choi) - when was the weather supposed to have been bad?

It is most likely that local markets will be prioritised over Britain in the event of shortages, isn’t it? Given the logistics. Which will be partly Brexit.

I don’t know how British imports can be particularly profitable for Spain, a lettuce grown in the mountains behind me is cheaper in sainsbury’s (when they are in stock!) than it is in my local Lidl. Why is that!?

Sadlifter · 22/02/2023 07:13

It's not just Spanish imports, we do grow tomatoes and lettuces here but they didn't grow enough this year.

How can it be solely down to a bad harvest when French supermarkets have no such shortages?

What you people don't seem to understand is that when there is supply issues, the SM prioritises the SM and we ain't in it.

Veg is one thing, we'll survive that but the problem with Brexit is it keeps us out of everything the EU does, the good and the bad, the damage to UK science, mirco chips and Green tech will be irreparable, far outweighing concerns on ECJ (which was also partly staffed by UK judges)

Crumpetdisappointment · 22/02/2023 07:45

not all french and spanish farmers export to UK
they sell to their own supermarkets
