Fuck, I ate raw chicken....

I'm a total idiot, just opened a pack of Cajun chicken fillets in breadcrumbs and was on the second bite before I realised that they were not pre-cooked... Blush

Spat out what I could but according to Google, I have between 6 hours and 6 days to start vomiting and diarrhoea, with possible salmonella, just from the one bite I ingested, fml 🤦🏻‍♀️

Has anyone ever done this and survived? I could really use not spending all night puking!

If it's only a wee bit and you're normally of a robust nature, in sure you'll be fine

Floraflower3 · 20/02/2023 16:51

My friend did this in college and was fine! 😂 She came in with chicken goujons and ate at least 1, I took one bit and immediately realised it was raw!

If you're very worried...make yourself sick??

Most chickens in the UK are free of salmonella. It's not great but the more you convince yourself you'll become unwell, the more likely it is

Youdoyoubabe · 20/02/2023 16:52

It will only make you ill if it has salmonella in it. I remember a family on wifeswap who ate only raw meat, including raw chicken. They seemed pretty healthy. I wouldn't worry too much.

WhisperingAutistic · 20/02/2023 16:52

It's probably not the right thing to do but I think I'd make myself sick on purpose to get it out.
Fingers crossed you have no ill effects.

Timeforabiscuit · 20/02/2023 16:53

If you're otherwise healthy, your stomach acid will take care of it, just wash your hands, rinse your mouth out and give your teeth a good brush.

milkysmum · 20/02/2023 16:56

My son has done this. He thought they were chicken fridge raider type things, but they were raw chicken bites. He was fine.

JehovahsWildebeest · 20/02/2023 16:56

Great advice, thanks people, I'm feeling a bit more positive. I did have a go at making myself sick but it didn't work and my googling results said not to do that.

So glad I'm not the only one who's done it, I feel unbelievably dumb. Blush

I think I would make myself sick, as long as you can do it safely.

Emmamoo89 · 20/02/2023 16:57

I'm sure you'll be fine

DurhamDurham · 20/02/2023 17:00

My daughter did that as a teen, ate a full pack of uncooked chicken goujons when she was drunk. I think as convinced she was going to be sick but she as absolutely fine. Maybe the alcohol 'cooked ' the chicken in her stomach Envy

Itgoesalittlesomethinglikethis · 20/02/2023 17:00

As a very stupid 18 yo at uni I made myself stir fry and didn't cook the chicken properly and was so ill I thought I was dying. I was ok in the end. You might be ok. I hope you will be anyway.

JehovahsWildebeest · 20/02/2023 17:01

@DurhamDurham Grin maybe I should drink loads just in case, seems like a good solution!

PortIsaac · 20/02/2023 17:02

DurhamDurham · 20/02/2023 17:02

@JehovahsWildebeest haha definitely worth a try! Grin

My cat ate raw chicken and was fine.

Do take care crossing any roads though, that's what did it for my cat. Sad

Cats can actually eat raw chicken 😊

I'm so sorry about your kitty x

BlueberryBuffin · 20/02/2023 17:35

Raw chicken is not automatically carrying salmonella. Chances are the massive majority of raw chicken is fine. It's just unpleasant in texture I'd imagine 🤢

Redebs · 20/02/2023 17:36

You'll probably be ok

I find drinking water as hot as bearable can help. It's counterintuitive, but the heat seems to help your stomach work better at fighting off the baddies
Or maybe just feels better

ShowOfHands · 20/02/2023 17:39

In my two decades on MN, I've seen dozens of "help I've eaten xyz" threads, including many about raw chicken. Never, not once, has the op been ill afterwards.

bikiniisland · 20/02/2023 17:41

I had campylobacter from raw chicken and it was brutal. Started a few days after and went on for 3 weeks

WonderingWanda · 20/02/2023 17:42

Drink a can of coke just to be safe!

Eightypercent · 20/02/2023 17:43

@JehovahsWildebeest I've had salmonella/gastroenteritis, six hours sounds about right. I was 20yo, vomiting for about four days, diarrhoea for weeks. I was skinny/fit to begin with but lost over 2 stone over a period of a year. A bad case means you lose the lining to you stomach so can't take on nutrients.
