Woah. The price of holidays right now.

Just having a look around the usual travel sites, thinking I'll go for a cheap few weeks in the sun. But oh my gosh, self catering in the canary Islands starting at around 800 quid! For that I'd want full board at a 4 star lol.

I suppose there's other sites (anyone tried icelolly?) but it'll be my first time abroad alone and I thought travel agents have reps ect so I might feel a bit less nervous.

Do we think places will get cheaper in a few months when there's more competition? Or more expensive because it's warmer and closer to summer?

Stop heating and eating. According to the media that is what other families are doing.

Valid8me · 18/02/2023 19:21

Well it depends how long you are looking to go for and at what time of year I guess. A fortnight in July/August will cost way more than say a week in May/September.

I'm going in May, as I always do, and the price hasn't risen a great deal from last year.

cariadlet · 18/02/2023 19:22

Flights have also shot up.

I've just looked at flights for the summer. About £300 more than I paid last summer for the same destination.

MandeeMore · 18/02/2023 19:36

It's extortionate even in the UK. We did Center Parcs for 4 nights in December 6 years ago, it was £300. The same week now is more than double! Completely mental.

It does depend what you're looking for though. Similarly, we did 4 nights Disneyland Paris nearly 10 years ago for £1200 and could get the same now for £1400, so not much of a mark up considering inflation, and that 2 of the DC were free last time...

We've booked our Holiday with Jet2 this year: a week in July, skirting the holidays. Just under £4k for a 4 star all inclusive for 2ad and 3ch - oldest is 15 though, so adult price.

Dolares · 18/02/2023 19:38

Its extortionate isn't it. My friend recommended a place in The Algarve that she is going to. I priced it up and it would cost us (2 adults, 2 DC under 8) over £5k for 7 days.

Bingowingo · 18/02/2023 19:41

I came on here to say the same. Flight prices are shocking, even by usual school holiday standards. Struggling to find anything to book. Also looked yesterday and had some options that have now gone! Feel quite despondent about it!

Pinkbonbon · 18/02/2023 19:43

Yeah I was looking for March and 1 week for just me would have been 800.

Maybe I could be brave and book a hostel xD
Probably not lol.

OP posts:
Valid8me · 18/02/2023 19:50

That is expensive for 1 person and 1 week in March unless you are going to a top of the range resort type place. I think you are paying the price of going on your own tbh, I have just checked out the prices on Jet2 for the Tenerife or Lanzarote in March and if 2 people go, you can get a week for £500 each.

Blablablablaba · 18/02/2023 19:52

Generally find they only go one way with prices and it's always up!

Holiday I found a month ago was £2,500 and I can now book it but it's gone up to £4,200!

GettingStuffed · 18/02/2023 19:53

Try looking long haul, next year were planning on having a family holiday, it's much cheaper to go to the DR and Mexico because it's not the high season there and you may have a hurricane. When we were in the DR we were right on the edge of one which meant the pool in the rain.

I was looking on tui and holiday and flight centre.
They started at 800 for the dates I checked. I only checked a few though.

I think sometimes you pay extra if you are a solo traveller though so could be that. Maybe i need to find a friend lol.

It's ridiculous at the moment. I priced up a self catering apartment for me and DH is October a month or so ago. Was just shy of £900. Same holiday has now shot up to nearly £1300. Kicking myself for not booking it then as I'm not booking at that price. We both have time off work when we were due to go and am tempted to try and book last minute in the hope that prices come down a bit.

Pinkbonbon · 18/02/2023 19:59

Sure enough! Like 250 quid cheaper if I take another person.

Ugh. Why do they have to punish us single folk xD

Just like the thing!

Might be lucky but yeah its a risk.

Op as a solo traveller you may be better value in a hotel rather than apartments self catering. You'll be charged for under occupancy so if the apartments sleep 4 and you aren't filling it then this could be quite a chunk.

EcoCustard · 18/02/2023 20:03

We used to go to Egypt for Easter for £4500, next year is £7000+. I had been looking at Center Parcs for next February for 7 nights had been around £1100 for 6 of us, went to
book and now £1900 like for like. Dominican Republic is ridiculous money now, went on last minute break pre kids and not worth the costs for us and that’s with a fine.

plumduck · 18/02/2023 20:06

Haven't even looked for the last 5 years anyway

KindergartenKop · 18/02/2023 20:10

We're going to Wales 😂

Perhaps you have left it a bit late for cheap holidays, we are off to the canaries in March 2 people sc for a fortnight for a grand.

Wales is lush I hope you have a great time

SoShallINever · 18/02/2023 20:17

Cornwall, £800 for a cottage that sleeps 8, end of May.

KindergartenKop · 18/02/2023 20:18

@plumduck it's so beautiful 😍 I will have a brilliant time with the kids on the beach 🏖️

Whatthetrolley · 18/02/2023 20:22

A week at Butlins half board at Easter is only £100 less that a weeks all inclusive to the Costa del Sol for 3 people for the same week.

gemeouttahere · 18/02/2023 20:23

It was tempting to book a few weeks ago when there were reasonable prices to head to the Canaries for a bit of winter sun, I'm talking late Feb/early March out of term time. I dithered and now probably can't afford it.

Travelling solo pushes up the price if you're going with a conventional holiday company. Try booking your own flight, accommodation etc and you might find it more affordable but it is a faff. Most of those reps are useless in my experience anyway!

TeenLifeMum · 18/02/2023 20:24

@Valid8me actually May half term is significantly more expensive than August this year! It’s weird.
