Just having a look around the usual travel sites, thinking I'll go for a cheap few weeks in the sun. But oh my gosh, self catering in the canary Islands starting at around 800 quid! For that I'd want full board at a 4 star lol.

I suppose there's other sites (anyone tried icelolly?) but it'll be my first time abroad alone and I thought travel agents have reps ect so I might feel a bit less nervous.

Do we think places will get cheaper in a few months when there's more competition? Or more expensive because it's warmer and closer to summer?

Have you tried looking for accommodation on booking.com? Sometimes people make reservations as they don't ask you to pay to make a reservation as long as you cancel a few weeks before the date. You might find something coming up because someone has cancelled a reservation made some time ago.

Mrsdragonfly · 18/02/2023 20:25

We’re stuck with holidays around term time and it’s mad. £5000k for 5 of us to go half board to Spain.

I was looking on tui and holiday and flight centre.
They started at 800 for the dates I checked. I only checked a few though.

I think sometimes you pay extra if you are a solo traveller though so could be that. Maybe i need to find a friend lol.

Going alone (as I do) I always buy flights and hotel separately. Assuming, as you are going alone, you are going to somewhere you have been before.

I go to Turkey on my own and can't afford package prices because the travel companies have x number of rooms at x price - so as a single you pay double price for the room. Many hotels will NOT charge you a full double room price if you go direct.

I go to Turkey on my own and have been doing so for 15 years. The most I have paid for a room is £10 per night B&B, until last year it was £17, still very reasonable.

This year I've got flights in May for £240 (inc luggage) for 10 days. Not yet booked room but even if it's £20 per night that is still a 10 day hol for £440.

Turkish hotels will all take direct bookings - they would much rather do that than give money to a third party.

Saschka · 18/02/2023 20:35

OP I used to do a lot of solo ski trips pre-DC, and if you are by yourself you will pay the same as a couple if you use a package.

Find your own flight, and look on AirBnb or Booking.com for a cheaper room. I’ve just done a two-minute search and found flights for £116 return, and apartments for £500, departing 11th March.

Deadringer · 18/02/2023 20:37

I booked an appartment in Malta for 2,600 for 9 days in June a few weeks ago which I thought was very pricey even though its for 5 adults for 9 nights and described as luxurious, just checked now and it's gone up to 3,800 for the same dates. Crazy.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 18/02/2023 20:37

Car hire is also through the roof!

TeenLifeMum · 18/02/2023 20:24

@Valid8me actually May half term is significantly more expensive than August this year! It’s weird.

Maybe people have finally cottoned on that the weather is usually better in May than in August - and then the tour operators have cottoned on that more people are booking.

Or people think May half term is cheaper and book and then the tour operators cotton on and put up the prices.

Although apparently they reduce the prices in the off season, not increase them in the "on" season. Yeah right.

Car hire is also through the roof!

Yes I think that's because there aren't as many cars for the hire companies to use.

89ghud · 18/02/2023 20:41

Our holiday from 2020 booked for the same month but this year is costing us 30% more and is a downgrade from what we had planned originally. Most of all, I'm dreading what we will spend on food (US, food has gone up so much there and the £ is crap against the dollar).

Deadringer · 18/02/2023 20:43

Omg I just checked the flights and they have increased so much. Like from 100pp to 600pp. Who could afford that?

StarDolphins · 18/02/2023 20:46

My friend goes to the same place in Portugal every year, same hotel & she got all her receipts out & it’s triple what it was only a few years ago!

There’s no way I’m overpaying for a holiday, we’ll do exciting day trips instead & a 2 night break somewhere.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 18/02/2023 20:48

We are finding the same. We have our accommodation sorted already but flights have almost doubled from where they were last year (£250 to £500+). Even travelling from London airports rather than my nearest 2 isn’t proving any cheaper, which was always the case.

CTR1000 · 18/02/2023 20:52

Yep, just booked flights to Spain in June (outside of school hols) - £400 each. Ouch.

whynotwhatknot · 18/02/2023 21:53

you dont sometimes pay more for being solo its always more

my fil goes away alone and the markup is ridiculous

MadAndGlad · 18/02/2023 22:01

We have booked Hurghada Egypt 2 weeks all inclusive 5* next week all inclusive package deal with Thompson £850 if you want sun, sea, sand and huge swimming pool! Been before. Loved it!

TeenLifeMum · 18/02/2023 22:48

We planned a week in Greece but my new boss is being flakey and refusing to agree summer holiday leave. I requested it in January. Price is now £1500 more and out of our budget! So pissed off.

Treeeeeeee · 18/02/2023 23:07

Have a look at tui and holiday hypermarket holidays posted on hot UK deals. I have seem some very cheap holidays on there in the last week or so

For example - www.hotukdeals.com/share-deal-from-app/4088407

maddiemookins16mum · 18/02/2023 23:10

We’re leaving it to a week before and going pot luck. My work colleague did this last September and got two weeks in Corfu for £399.

tigerbear · 18/02/2023 23:22

Absolutely agree OP!
it’s crazy.!
After being astounded by prices for self catering on AirBNB to go to Mallorca, I put in our dates for the summer into a search on the Tui site, adding Spain, Greece, Portugal, Mallorca etc. Cheapest for 10 days for 2 adults and 2 children = £6500!
prices then rose up to £12,500!!!!

This is just for run of the mill bog standard accommodation and resorts, nothing luxurious!

PrincessOfWaiIs · 18/02/2023 23:33

I've never been on holiday and we hoped to go this year. The prices are absolutely ridiculous so it looks like it won't be happening.

Even two nights in a Travelodge in my favourite UK city is up over £200.

We’ve just booked in a very nice 4 star hotel in Tenerife for the end of March. £400 each, which I think is reasonable. And there were quite a few similarly priced on there. Used On The Beach site. I bet though school holiday trips will be pretty expensive. But they always have been.

CupOfAnxieTea · 19/02/2023 00:15

Is is crazy. We have to go in school holidays as I am a teacher (next year will also have little one in school). Just went to Cornwall for around £300 for 7 nights. Bog standard static caravan - checked out the price for August and it was £1800! I think the only time we are ever going to be able to afford a holiday is in the Feb half term now. Or a short weekend. It's really depressing - I wish there was protection in place against inflating prices that much in school holidays.

QueenCamilla · 19/02/2023 00:19

4 - 5k for a week?? And then all the other expenses. Jesus. Holidays are overrated.
I'll never look the same at people who "holiday".

I looked at flights to see family in Europe. Might drive instead.

motherofkevinnotperry · 19/02/2023 01:19

I booked a couple of weeks ago to go last week half term. 5 nights, canaries, 4 of us, 3 adult prices and it's under 1.3k jet2. Midweek flights, self catering. It's the very cheapest I could find. We loved it, kept costs down by not eating out. The prices have gone ridiculous in the last week.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 19/02/2023 01:51

I booked just after Xmas. Solo traveller, 1st week in May with Jet2 to Crete. £602. Paid for hb but got free upgrade to all inc. Very happy with that especially as I paid £900 for Rhodes with TUI last year for the same time.
