Any simple ideas to cover the flashing light on my car charger?

Because of where it's positioned under an overhang we can't see the light in our house unless we deliberately look out the study window, but my neighbour says that she can see it flashing in the master bedroom of her house. I could just black it out with duct tape, but it would be useful if there was any gadget out the that can be attached to cover the front and the neighbour's side but still be open on my side so that I can see the charging state.

Ive had to stick duct tape over everything in the bedroom that has a light, like the telly or the plug sockets.

Ive also had to get different curtains, plus liners, plus weight my curtains down on the window sill with books, scrunching them up so that they are flat to the wall because of selfish neighbours who have bright white fairly lights flashing all bloody night. It comes through the top and side of my curtains and black out liners and reflects on the white ceiling, white wall and white wardrobe

Utterly selfish

Im now having to think about whether to get shutters, expensive.

You can get tinted film on amazon designed to dull the lights of things keeping you awake at night.

autumnboys · 16/02/2023 14:35

While that sounds incredibly annoying of your neighbour bellac11, the OP here is asking how she can make her neighbour’s life better.

OP, could you try the manufacturer? Also, perhaps someone who 3D prints could help you? Does the car have an app you could use to see if it’s charging rather than the light? Otherwise, could you cover it but leave a tiny sliver visible? Would that be okay for your neighbour?

I've had a look at those, they all seem to be static cling which I don't think would work outside.

I have painter's tape which I used for quilting, I will probably put a couple of layers of that on for the time being. But it's blue and my box is black so it'll look a bit ropey, if it improves my neighbour's sleep though she probably won't be too bothered about it looking bad.

Ooh, 3D printing is an idea, a little cover that I can just super-glue over the light that tilts up on my side maybe. I don't know anyone who has a printer, but I'm sure I could find someone and give them measurements.

Electrical tape?

AlwaysLatte · 16/02/2023 14:45

What about a magnetic sun cover?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/02/2023 14:48

I wonder if I could use Sugru to make a cover? It's not a big light, it's long but very narrow. I'm not great at model making but I could probably roll it out fairly flat then attach it on three sides and lift up part of the edge that faces away from the neighbour. The light itself is very slightly below the level of the surround so I could potentially just fill it in with Sugru and smooth the edges.

Could you do a link to the kind of thing you mean please, I can't picture it.

Also, is magnetic anything ok to use on an electrical charger?

Is it really that bright? If you want to be nice to the neighbour why don't you just turn it off in the app?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/02/2023 15:03

I didn't think it was particularly bright, but clearly bright enough to annoy her. The car charges overnight and the app controls charging but doesn't control the charger, I need to go out and physically turn it off to turn off the light. It only flashes while it's charging, but now that it's bothering her I think it would be noticeable even as a steady light so it would be better for her to just block it somehow.

I'm looking at Amazon and wonder if gaffer tape might be what I need. It looks pretty solid but peels off easily if needed.

Just googled car charger cover and found a few!

I think those are supposed to be for protection while it's not being used rather than to block the light. It would be hard to keep it on while the car is plugged in, when the car isn't plugged in there's no issue because I can turn the charger, and its light, off.

Just a warning: when I clicked on that link my antivirus warned me that there is a virus embedded in a cookie it tried to download.

OnMyWayToSenility · 16/02/2023 15:31

There are loads of different ones it was just an illustration that they exist if you google it 🤣

No suggestions, but you sound like a really lovely neighbour.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/02/2023 15:37

Where is it in relation to your drive and the neighbours window? Could you park the car in between the charger and the window to block it?

Unfortunately not, the drive is weirdly positioned so there is a flower bed in front of the charger.

@bellac11 have you had a look at Bloc blinds or other cassette blinds? They are roller blinds that have side tracks meaning no light at all comes through at all. Probably far cheaper than shutters.

Grin Well, I'm not terrible but I think she misses the retired couple that lived here before us. She's very polite but 'mentions' things a lot.

Is it not a wallbox? You need the wallbox app and to connect to it via Bluetooth then you can turn it off

VenusClapTrap · 16/02/2023 16:57

Stupid bloody lights on every electrical device these days. Drives me mad. I go round the house sticking insulating tape all over dh’s gadgets and chargers.

I deliberately chose an Andersen car charger because it’s not lit up like Blackpool illuminations unlike most of the others. Not that that helps you, op, sorry, but it might help others reading this who are looking into installing a car charger, to know that not all of them are flashy and annoying.
