Hello! I need to get from Manchester Picadilly to a place in Oldham (from London). I'm just looking at the route and google maps is suggesting two trains and a bus. Anyone have a rough idea of how much a cab would be? Its for work and will be on expenses but I don't want to take the piss if its loads!

At quite a wild guess £20 - 25ish?

You could get the tram to Oldham and then a taxi if needed? Tram is about £4 single / £6 for a day ticket. (Metrolink).

bookish83 · 15/02/2023 15:15

Is it suggesting to get to get the tram? That would be one route from Piccadilly?

Not sure about a taxi cost sorry

Honeyroar · 15/02/2023 15:16

Do you know where in Oldham? Trams go to the centre and quite a few other small surrounding little towns.

luckylavender · 15/02/2023 15:29

I thought tram too

SausageRoll2020 · 15/02/2023 15:32

Where are you actually heading to? Somewhere in Oldham town centre or a place in the Council Borough of Oldham?
If the town centre then you can get on a tram from Piccadilly easily.

VioletaDelValle · 15/02/2023 15:50

Where in Oldham? There is a tram network but that doesn't extend to Saddleworth but would get you to lots of other parts of Oldham.
An Uber could cost between £20-30 depending where you're going.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 15/02/2023 17:19

OL8 2 is the area.

Yes, it's trams I think problem is it's going to take me 4 hours just to get to Piccadilly and I could do with another hour of trams etc on top (and then same on way home!)

Gah, name changes all over the shop!

VioletaDelValle · 15/02/2023 17:31

A taxi will probably be around £20-25 to OL8 depending on who you use and time of day.

I'd advise getting a taxi rather than a tram you're not familiar with that area, especially if it's at night!

WhatCanWeDoNext · 15/02/2023 17:32

It’d take at least half an hour by car from Piccadilly station to Oldham. Depends whether your priority is the time saving or the cost saving.

Good luck with your trip.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 15/02/2023 18:31

Thanks all! Definitely time saving if it's about £25 each way!

Honeyroar · 15/02/2023 21:35

I think the area you’re trying to get to would be quite difficult via the tram anyway.

Honeyroar · 15/02/2023 21:35

You could get the tram to the centre of Oldham and then get a taxi from there.

newwings · 15/02/2023 23:29

There's a tram I'm sure

Eudaimonia5 · 15/02/2023 23:39

You can get the 84 bus from Oldham Street in Piccadilly, the stop near Oxfam. That should take you to OL8. You can walk from there, Google maps will direct you.

Eudaimonia5 · 15/02/2023 23:41

Just read your post again, I was clearly too eager to help! If work are paying then just get a taxi, like PP have said, it should be about £20-25

Pssspsss · 16/02/2023 00:04

get an Uber if work are paying.

Theres not a direct tram to Oldham from Piccadilly so you’d have to change, plus then try to find a taxi or jump on a bus to the postcode you are going too. I could do it easily but if not familiar with the area it’s a ball ache.

plus tram/bus/taxi fares from Piccadilly wouldn’t be that far off an Uber cost.

this is the current price. I expect it may be a little more in the day time due to the journey taking a little longer. Expect the Uber to take a good half an hour to 45 minutes. You’d be looking around an hour to 1:30 on public transport.

Have Fun

Pssspsss · 16/02/2023 00:10

Oh and I’d leave at least a good hour to an hour and a half for your return to Piccadilly traffic can be a bitch around that area and on the run into town. Don’t miss your train to London. Knowing avanti you’ll wait three days for the next one

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 16/02/2023 01:11

@Pssspsss that's really helpful!!

Yep, I think the faff of trams etc for where I'm going means I'd be happier getting a cab. 5hs each way for a 1 hour meeting 😭

No worries my love.

honestly I need to ask, can you disclose a little about the meeting? Why In this day and age of Skypes zooms teams FaceTimes are you being sent on a 10-hr round trip (to a very specific location that’s not even central to anything) costing £100s for a 1-hr meeting? It’s bonkers!

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 16/02/2023 20:47

@Pssspsss haha - I see your point! I'm a clinical psychologist and I'm conducting an assessment for a Court case - has to be in person 😊

Woah now I’m completely fascinated! was not expecting that! However I do get why that has to be conducted in person!

Wishing you all the best for a smooth journey! Definitely Uber there and back from Piccadilly. I have a feeling you may not necessarily be on the main road either so definitely not worth trying to find it using public transport. Feel free to PM me if you need any further help journey planning xx

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 16/02/2023 21:18

@Pssspsss that's so sweet - thank you!! Yes, it's most likely a residential area I'm going to. I really don't want to stay in Oldham overnight so shall be a long day!

PauliesWalnuts · 16/02/2023 21:37

I’m in Oldham (the ‘burbs). Some bits of Oldham are pretty well connected - others are much less so. If you’re tram or training it you’ll need to get from Piccadilly to Victoria. Tram is fairly quick, train is fast but limited - only stops at Mills Hill on the Middleton border but only takes 14 mins to Victoria. Depending on where in Oldham Uber could be from £15-£25, but black cab from outside the station probably £30+ these days.
