Taking out the bins - should DH empty all the house bins too?

DH generally always takes out the bins on bin day. He never empties the bins in the house before he does so. Well, he might do the kitchen ones. Neither do I , I just empty the bins as I think of it. When I was growing up the bins were all emptied before bin day.
This is not even a conversation between DH and I , I couldn't care less. Just wondering if everyone else has a rubbish free house come bin day?!

Yes I go round and empty all the bins the day before collection day, otherwise I’d be filling up a newly emptied bin with stuff that could have gone with the old collection.
Our bin is collected every 2 weeks, is yours still weekly?

echt · 13/02/2023 22:33

When DH was alive, bins were my job and every bin was emptied Thursday evening, new liners put in, etc. I still do, every Thursday evening.

It's like change the bed linen day - Saturday- just part of the cleaning cycle.

justasking111 · 13/02/2023 22:33

House Bins all emptied the day before otherwise I'd forget. Have so many recycling bins to sort it into, six outside, on top of that cardboard to break down.

mondaytosunday · 13/02/2023 22:40

Im the adult in our household and I do the bins. There are bins in the bathrooms too. I only empty the main one when it's full. My daughter is responsible for emptying hers and putting the bag in the kitchen bin. I think she only does it when full too.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 13/02/2023 22:43

The priority in our house is getting the wheelie bin out for collection. We do that first, and then if we get the chance to go round the house and get together another bag of rubbish to add to it, even better.

Decafflatteplease · 13/02/2023 22:45

Here whenever we take the kitchen bin out (most days) we empty all the other bins into it too, just keeps.on top of it then

We're every fortnight. I do get your point about the rubbish sitting there for two weeks unnecessarily

Six?! Yikes.

Good idea to do it the day before

We don't have bins in every room as they got filled with recycling as well as rubbish which then has to be sorted... so bin in bathroom and kitchen only - and yes it usually gets done as the bins go out... but then our collection is Monday so it's a weekend job anyway.

That's kinda how I feel. If we (Dh) get the bin out we're doing well

Yep all bins emptied beside rubbish day. At least the kitchen bin, don't want that decaying longer than necessary

CC4712 · 13/02/2023 22:54

OP- why don't you care less? How odd? Don't you end up with times you can't fit all the rubbish in when you need to get rid of it?

I put rubbish in the wheelie bin/food bin etc when the inside one gets full- but also empty all I can when its bin night. Why wouldn't you?

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/02/2023 23:00

DH does the bins, including all the house bins, every Sunday before bin day on Monday. About the only thing I ever think about is bringing them in, and that's probably only about once every couple of months, most of the time I am totally oblivious to the whole bin routine.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 13/02/2023 23:00

We only have kitchen and bathroom bins (no wastepaper baskets in living room or bedrooms) so the kitchen bin in particular fills up pretty fast and gets emptied a lot!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/02/2023 23:03

We've got a recycling bin which is small so we do that daily.
The kitchen bin every 2 days or so and the bathroom bin which only gets used during my period so I just empty at the end of that.

I suppose I shouldn't say I couldn't care less. Really I mean it doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it other than empty the house bins into the big bin when needed. It's not something I'm going to make a rule about or have a discussion about or add to my to-do list

We empty the small kitchen compost bin into the big bin when it's full. Ditto kitchen and recycling. So I suppose it's more the upstairs bins which have tissues and scraps of paper etc in them.

Dh does the bins, inc. all the bins in various rooms, except for the food waste, which I do - there is sometimes meat or fish waste in the freezer - I never put it out until the night before the bin men come - which he’d quite likely forget.

Cupcakequeen75 · 14/02/2023 09:59

Yes we make sure all bins are emptied the evening before, just a routine.

Kitchen, bathrooms 1&2, cloakroom, utility, study, recycling and finally food-waste. In the garden we also have the dog-poo bin (lovely!).
Fortnightly collections (weekly food-waste) but we never fill any of the wheelie bins to the top.

megletthesecond · 14/02/2023 10:00

Yes, all house bins emptied the day before bin day.

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/02/2023 10:13

I don't really think about it to be honest.

Either DO or I will point out it's bin day the next day and then usually one/both of us will empty the bins into the house into the larger bin and he'll take it out and put the bin out. He usually does most of it including the remembering. Can't say we've ever had to discuss it other than a quick 'did the bathroom bin get emptied' - 'yep' or 'no, I'll go do it, and whoever's closest or not currently busy/sat down will.

ifonly4 · 14/02/2023 10:49

I just empty bins as and when I think about it - usually when I feel one needs doing because it's full or someone has put someone smelly in kitchen bin (that someone being DH🙄). On average I'll do them every 6-7 days.

TreacleMcDoo · 14/02/2023 11:12

We have 2 set days a week for all the bins in the house to be emptied into the wheelie bins outside and one of these days coincides with wheelie bin collection for either recycling or general waste. The children (teens) are each responsible for certain bins and they also put the wheelie bin out and bring it back in. They do it as they leave the house in the morning. If it is school holidays and the teens aren't up at 8am then Dh does it as he is up for work

I am responsible for glass recycling as that needs taking to a local centre and I also clean both the kitchen recycling bin and the normal kitchen bin. Everyone has a responsibility and does it. Set days are better for us rather than waiting until the bin is full and then emptying it.

daisychain01 · 14/02/2023 11:13

Clean sweep of all bins round the house before bin day - we try to recycle as much as we can, or burn / shred anything like confidential papers which then go on the compost heap, as well as Amazon boxes which are great for layering in the compost and break down over time. I feel satisfied if all bins are empty, sorted and out for collection by the Wednesday deadline.

when I think about it, we have been generating less rubbish than ever before as we try to choose goods with minimal/no packaging (eg avoiding single use plastics for veg/fruit which are an appalling waste of resource), which probably plays into the Council's hands as to why they reduced wheelie bin collections to fortnightly and recycling increased to weekly.

LadyJ2023 · 14/02/2023 11:13

Hubby does it every week thanks goodness
