I bought custard, but forgot to buy a dessert

I'm just back from the supermarket and I have some lovely fresh vanilla custard. I was intending to get some sort of sponge or pie dessert to go with it but have the short-term memory of a mushroom so didn't. I don't want to bake anything, what could I have that would be good with hot custard over it?

I'd just have the custard by itself. Or with bananas if you have them.

Tinyant · 13/02/2023 20:27

Cold, straight out of the tub with a spoon!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 13/02/2023 20:27

Tinned fruit or bananas

If I have it with bananas, do I just slice them up as they are or do I bake the bananas first?

If you've got any frozen berries, they're lovely cooked in a sugar syrup then custard on the top.

Bjarnum · 13/02/2023 20:28

Put the custard into an ovenproof dish, thick layer of brown sugar on top then under the grill until sugar is melted and bubbling! Cheat's creme brulee ..

Tecksupport · 13/02/2023 20:28

Just heat and enjoy as it is!

I love bananas and custard has to be cold custard tho

FavouriteSlippers · 13/02/2023 20:28

Cold as it is. Or maybe crush some chocolate in it.
I love cold custard

BaronessBomburst · 13/02/2023 20:28

Just the custard!
Maybe a blob of raspberry jam in the middle.

Shock OMG, I think we have a winner. It's a bit less viscous than the creme in creme brûlée but I could work.

This! Sat on bus on way home from work and could just eat this now, sounds delicious. Who needs sponge or pie?!

Absolutely this. It's SO much better cold than warmed up.

If I'm feeling flash, I put it in a bowl first and put a spoonful of raspberry preserve on top.

pengymum · 13/02/2023 20:31

Microwave sponge?
Bread & butter pudding - slice & butter bread or hot cross buns or croissants/pain au chocolat or brioche. Spread with a bit of jam or marmalade or mixed dried fruit?
Pour over custard & bake till golden brown.

saraclara · 13/02/2023 20:32

Seriously, I buy Tesco or Waitrose finest custard simply to eat as it is. I don't think I've ever heated it. I just put it in a bowl and eat it in the same way as yoghurt.

FavouriteDogMug · 13/02/2023 20:34

If you have the ingredients you could make a microwave sponge pudding www.ocado.com/webshop/recipe/Nigella-s-Speedy-Steamed-Syrup-Sponge/223042

Mummysgonetobed · 13/02/2023 20:34

I’d make a mug cake and drown it in custard. I did a cinnamon one the other day and it was amazing and done in less than 2 minutes.

I was going to say big blob of jam!
1980's style soup & pudding for lunch!

Banna custard is great. If you put butter and sugar in a frying pan and melt you get toffee which you can chick the bananas in first. You get sift banana, crunchy toffee and smooth custard.

I always end up with custard over so plonk it in shop bought puff pastry with a blob of jam and call it a custard Danish .

Oooh, banoffee is also now a possibility. I wonder if I could combine my two favourites so far by having banoffee in a ramekin, covered with custard, topped with Demerara sugar and put under the grill?

Banana and custard mmmm
Or raspberries, rhubarb, blueberries...
No need for a desert, custard is the main event as far as I'm concerned.

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/02/2023 20:45

Sliced banana and some dark chocolate chips, swirl around a little and they taste the joy.

Crumpetdisappointment · 13/02/2023 20:51

or puree some apple

BevMarsh · 13/02/2023 20:53

Definitely stewed apple

RosaBonheur · 13/02/2023 20:55

If you have butter, flour, sugar and any kind of fruit you could make a crumble.
