What’s the modern equivalent of ….

this is aimed at fellow women around their late thirties.

Remember back in the day when you went out out it used to be jeans, nice top and heels. Well what’s the modern equivelent of that.

Going out out next weekend. First time in a long time. What’s the current version of “jeans and a nice top”?

I still wear this, but definitely not heels (cannot wear them) so.i wear flat shoes in a nice colour (favourites are green suede with pink.laces). I am not fashionable and should be kicked off these boards. I always wear bootcuts or flares.

BankOfDave · 12/02/2023 20:32

I think this is still a thing but it’s about type of jeans ie. high waisted/boyfriend/skinnies/hipster. The shoes is either funky trainers/heels and top is dressy vest or cool t-shirt and jacket is leather/utility - all with nice handbag.

Have fun!

HelterSkelter224 · 12/02/2023 20:34

Well I just read that the floral midi dress (flats for day heels for night) is on its way out so I'm at a total loss 😂

Always4Brenner · 12/02/2023 20:35

I live in jeans must get some more shoes though flats of course but not ballet pumps too uncomfortable.

Needmorelego · 12/02/2023 20:37

I would say it's still 'jeans and a nice top' but worn with trainers or converse style shoes rather than heals.

TakeNoTweetsGiveNoQuacks · 12/02/2023 20:39

@HelterSkelter224 😬 currently wearing a floral midi with DMs. I'm fucked aren't I? 😩😂

I wear converse all the time, but I wouldn’t wear them out out would I?

Trainers are most definitely in and people wear them to clubs with dresses….I don’t think I can bring myself to do it!

A jumpsuit might be the in thing, or tight top and flowing trousers with jeans??

I read this too. It was my only other option! 😂 I just have nothing and don’t even know what to buy or where to look.

With trainers not jeans….just love my jeans too much

Yutes · 12/02/2023 21:33

I have recently discovered a midi dress and chunky boots to be a new smart-easy-to-wear going out wear.

dudsville · 12/02/2023 21:37

Jumpsuits and dresses definitely! With wonderful shoes, not heels!

Weallgottachangesometime · 14/02/2023 17:02

update!!
so I went out shopping today with the soecific intention of getting a more ‘fashionable’ going out out outfit. Didn’t realise until I got home that I have in actual fact just bought bloody ‘jeans and a nice top’. Massive face palm.

so I got…/
This top-

These jeans-

They're even fucking boot cut.

Is this ok? Or is it horribly dated?

I mean I like them so I suppose that’s all that matters really. I just wonder if to others it appears old fashioned- liked those older women still putting on 80style make up.

It is very much the style of the early ‘00’s.

Weallgottachangesometime · 14/02/2023 17:06

@PaigeMatthews oh god I know!! I dunno how it happened. It felt modern in the shop!

I love the top. Maybe there’s something more modern to wear them with than boot cuts?

I'm in my 50s and I'd love to know too. Especially now we're not supposed to do skinny jeans! I had been doing version with, coated jeans and chunky boots, but no more....apparently 😆

My dh once complained all my ‘nice tops’ were pink or floral and that he was choosing me something (honestly he isnt at all controlling!). Anyway, off he went shopping and back he came with a pink and floral top.

we like what we like.

This.

Dress or skirt, tights and chunky flat boots are alot of women's choice of outfit to go out in these days.

Firstdays · 14/02/2023 17:11

What will you do for shoes with that outfit OP?. I think heels would be dated, trainers better but I'm of an age that can't quite get my head round trainers for a night out or with an otherwise dressy outfit, so what else?

Well I was thinking heels of course 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

oh god I need to book a bloody personal shopper or something.

ok I’m thinking I’ll take the jeans back but try to find something to go with the camisole because I love it.

I maybe I should just embrace the 00s

@TakeNoTweetsGiveNoQuacks

I've worn floral dresses and doc martens since the 1990's sometimes I'm in fashion Grin

I had a personal shopper in the summer. I bought......a pair of wide leg jeans, that I've hardly worn because I don't know what to do about shoes 😆

NotAnotherTaco · 14/02/2023 17:19

I love the cami top!

Weallgottachangesometime · 14/02/2023 17:21

@NotAnotherTaco me too.

Been pintresting for ideas. Would it looks better with a pair of blue cropped jeans I wonder?

OP posts:
Firstdays · 14/02/2023 17:22

I'd wear it with skinny, possibly coated jeans and chunky boots. But I know nothing!
