What’s the modern equivalent of ….

this is aimed at fellow women around their late thirties.

Remember back in the day when you went out out it used to be jeans, nice top and heels. Well what’s the modern equivelent of that.

Going out out next weekend. First time in a long time. What’s the current version of “jeans and a nice top”?

I'm definitely old. I look at that top and think, oh that looks chilly, you'll need a cardigan with that 😃

Weallgottachangesometime · 14/02/2023 17:24

What about with cropped/ankle jeans like this??

but then what about shoes!

update!!
so I went out shopping today with the soecific intention of getting a more ‘fashionable’ going out out outfit. Didn’t realise until I got home that I have in actual fact just bought bloody ‘jeans and a nice top’. Massive face palm.

so I got…/
This top-

These jeans-

They're even fucking boot cut.

Is this ok? Or is it horribly dated?

I mean I like them so I suppose that’s all that matters really. I just wonder if to others it appears old fashioned- liked those older women still putting on 80style make up.

All the kids are into 90s revival, so by those rules and with those purchases you've just taken 20 yrs off! Have fun.

Firstdays · 14/02/2023 17:22

I'd wear it with skinny, possibly coated jeans and chunky boots. But I know nothing!

I’ve got skinny so I could do that.

The pair of bootcut I bought today are the only pair I have. I can manage day wear. Just I never go out so I find I’m at a loss!!

well I’ll probably get a jacket and a pashmina!! Complete the 00s look 😂

How about a long silk bias cut skirt and chunky boots with the top - Jigsaw has good ones. 90s rather than 00s!

RhubarbAndMustard · 14/02/2023 17:28

I love the top but would pair with jeans like the model has on in that picture and probably a flat dm style boot or my rose gold trainers. Leather jacket.

I wear converse all the time, but I wouldn’t wear them out out would I?

Why not if you like them? That's all I wear. Unless you're off to a dinner dance at the Savoy.

BigFatLiar · 14/02/2023 17:30

You must have bought them because you like the look and are comfortable in them so shh not just wear what you feel good in.

I’m literally only going to bars/clubs. Are converse “allowed” because I’d bloody love to wear them. I literally wear them 5/7 days of the week.

is the “no trainers” rule not a thing now.

BTW I am only 38- I’m making myself sound about 80

Weallgottachangesometime · 14/02/2023 17:33

@BigFatLiar thats true. I tried it on and I did feel good. I was actually hoping for some flares rather than boot cut. I am terrible at wearing the same thing over and over though.

That looks good. I'm way too short for cropped jeans tho!

Dunno. I'm sure there are some bars that are weird about it. But if I got turned away from somewhere because my footwear wasn't considered acceptable I'd probably assume it was somewhere I wouldn't have been comfortable in anyway!

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 14/02/2023 17:40

The outfit you bought looks like something I would wear 22 years ago, which is what appears to be back in fashion. I wish I had saved more of my stuff from then.

Is it back in fashion??

just heard my 21yr old niece just got a pair of bootcut.

I don’t know if I’m coming or going.

Just got used to not wearing skinnies and now we’re told there coming “back”

My go-to party/ going out outfit is usually a black jumpsuit with red lipstick. Usually trainers though I don't even have any heeled boots these days.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/02/2023 17:58

Yes literally wear what you wore when you were 18 minus the heels and you’ll be in fashion!

I’m 36 and I wear a short dress with sparkly Vans or baggy jeans/ combats with a cropped top with Vans (possibly sparkly) or converse. Oh or denim shorts with a cropped top and a shacket when it’s warm enough I’m aware I’m not very typical though! My view is it was my style before the teenagers nicked it so I’m keeping it 😂.

Yutes · 14/02/2023 18:48

Just embrace what you feel good in OP.

According to my dd (16) we aren't allowed to say "00s" as it's the "2000s" 🤔😁

WelshNerd · 14/02/2023 19:56

Nice top with coated jeans/leather trousers.

Smiffette · 14/02/2023 19:58

I still wear that now! I'm in my late thirties.

I went out out a year ago for a hen do and firstly, everyone is so young! Also it seems converse : trainers and short dresses are a thing in a nightclub with the younger generation

TiredInPerpetuity · 14/02/2023 20:01

I think it's mom jeans; heels, T-shirt and an oversized blazer. Certainly where I live anyway. Hair and make up glam with it

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/02/2023 20:01

I was out at the weekend and seriously OP you are overthinking it. People of all ages in bars -
Jeans and nice tops, teeny dresses and trained, flares, bootcut, floral dresses - a bit of everything and nobody seemed to care. The only thing there wasn't - heels. Hardly any heels.

Hiouo · 14/02/2023 20:04

Go jeans like the picture and a casual oversized blazer and the top you bought! Will look lovely! I’d go vans or trainers with it, glam hair and makeup! Everyone wears trainers now!

Okunevo · 14/02/2023 20:04

No, I never wore heels out. I wore one inch kitten heels once, at my wedding, where I had my dad to hold onto!

I wear clean white trainers or black leather boots now.
