What is the best bread for toasting?

Sorry for the boring subject matter (single mum with nobody in house to chat to)!

But has anyone tried the toast in a M&S cafe? I live near a big out of town store and had it last week and I can honestly say it was the nicest toast I've ever had in my life. Only downside was not enough butter provided. The toast was white bread, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside.

So it got me thinking, what is the best bread to toast?

Disclaimer: I should be starting my healthy eating journey today however I now want to drive to M&S for a plate of yummy toast (which I could make at home and save myself £2)

Warburtons white toasty. Or tiger bloomer. No actually it's the beetroot bread from my local farm shop! It's £5 a loaf though so a very occasional treat! Can you tell I like toast?

I love toast made with a loaf containing Spelt flour. It’s an ancient grain which you don’t hear much about. It makes toast like you describe. Some (artisan) bakers still include it in their mix but it’s rare to find it in supermarket bread.

M&S toast will be made with their own branded bread. Just ask the cafe ladies which one it is and go buy it from the good hall.
Toast! Comfort food of the gods.

good hall?
You’ll know I meant Food hall.

Tesco's three cheese bloomer bread. As bread its lovely but as toast...wow! The cheesiness melts and the bread is warm and crunchy. And with butter... clearly I don't buy it very often because of the calories!

Warnurtons 21 grains bread is lovely.

Jackson’s White is the best white bread hands down.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 11/02/2023 08:07

Thick sliced tiger log is amazing toasted - we get either Asda’s or Iceland’s when we shop in there. Medium is also nice toasted but you need thick sliced if you’re after the soft fluffy centre!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 11/02/2023 08:08

Tiger log? Loaf!!

I agree that Jackson's is good 👍

Jason's White ciabattjn sourdough.

muddlingthrou · 11/02/2023 08:14

Controversial, but I like a seed sensations. I prefer bread with lots of stuff in it. Mm, can't beat a slice of heavily buttered toast...

greyfox82 · 11/02/2023 08:15

Thanks for all your suggestions! I have a kid free weekend and am about to jump out of bed and go and get some toast.

Maybe I need to do a trial of all of the above (three cheese bread sounds insane).... I'll put off the really healthy eating for a bit (I'm the kind of girl that eats one slice and before you know it the whole thing is gone)

@Warspite great idea! I will ask and report back. I also need to know toasting equipment and temperature x

@whoami24601 beetroot bread? Sound intriguing!

@LovedFedAndNoonesDead thanks for the tip. I never go thick slice but think I'm going to start xxx

@muddlingthrou totally get this. I have a seeded loaf and love them too (with a generous layer of butter)!

The white bread from a small independent bakery near us makes toast just as you describe. I cannot ever, ever buy it or I would eat the whole thing with butter over a day. It's like crack. Otherwise I like the rough wholemeal organic from Cranks.

Jason's White ciabattjn sourdough.

This is the correct answer. Need to toast it for ages though.

Tirednest · 11/02/2023 08:19

Controversially, I don't like sourdough toast. Too hard and crunchy and reminds me of lockdown.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 11/02/2023 08:22

thick slice tiger loaf all day every day.

Cookerhood · 11/02/2023 08:23

Tesco 3 cheese bread makes wonderful toast. My homemade (bread machine) bread is best otherwise, sliced thick. Thick slicing is the secret to good toast.
Must be proper butter, preferably with salt crystals.

greyfox82 · 11/02/2023 08:33

@Cookerhood the butter is almost the main event! It's so good... the expensive French butter with salt crystals is amazing. I'm sure aldi does their own version now?

OP posts:
Cookerhood · 11/02/2023 08:46

@greyfox82 yes it does.
Guess what I'm having for breakfast? And possibly lunch, too 😂

greyfox82 · 11/02/2023 09:21

@Cookerhood I'm going to drive to M&S now just so I can get toast perfection xxx enjoy

Crosta e Mollica Pane Pugliese. Useless for anything except toast, you wouldn't want it for a sandwich, but it makes lovely toast. I like crunchy buttered toast and that's what it delivers. Great for bruschetta.
