What is the best bread for toasting?

Sorry for the boring subject matter (single mum with nobody in house to chat to)!

But has anyone tried the toast in a M&S cafe? I live near a big out of town store and had it last week and I can honestly say it was the nicest toast I've ever had in my life. Only downside was not enough butter provided. The toast was white bread, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside.

So it got me thinking, what is the best bread to toast?

Disclaimer: I should be starting my healthy eating journey today however I now want to drive to M&S for a plate of yummy toast (which I could make at home and save myself £2)

The best toast is made under a gas grill.
No idea why but it just is.

Second best is made on an Aga hotplate.

A toaster is probably the most convenient but worst option!

Any bread is good, but granary is my favourite.

Slightly stale bread makes the best toast.

Co op white toast bread is the best

Warburton toast white

Sourdough is awful

Getir · 11/02/2023 10:15

I'm not a fan of sourdough bread. M & S thick white bread makes pretty good toast.

Costa coffee toast is pretty good. Not sure if it's the bread or the Irish butter that makes it so good.

Proper sourdough. Never any generic white sliced made using the Chorleywood process. Awful pap.

Jason’s ciabattin: not like normal sourdough and certainly not related to ciabatta but really great for toast. That link makes me realise there are two variants I have yet to encounter (malted and whole meal). Further investigation is needed.

Jackson's white seeded, or M&S fruit and treacle. Extra butter

Jason's White ciabattjn sourdough.

Definitely this. It’s perfect. And no preservatives etc either

Chichz · 03/02/2024 22:02

Yep, Jason's ciabattin for me too! Pricey for the size but I'm another that can't eat generic sliced bread anymore since reading the ingredients...

Something seems to happen to it when you add butter which is unlike any other bread. It sort of pools?! Mmmmmm!

OpalOrchid · 03/02/2024 22:03

M & S white farmhouse loaf.

Borborygmus · 03/02/2024 22:33

IMO sourdough makes by far the best toast. The only downside is that it takes significantly longer to toast than most other breads.

DoubleScreens · 04/02/2024 01:01

Jackson's of Yorkshire
