Does anyone else have this vile sore throat virus?

Hi everyone,

I've had a sore throat for almost two weeks now. No sign of getting better. Coughing a lot through the day, but even more at night. I get real coughing fits.

I went to see my GP, because I have never had a sore throat for so long.

The GP said it is viral and that they can't give me any medicine.

Does anyone else have it? When will this get better?

Sounds like the latest Covid variant.

MeghanThyStallion · 08/02/2023 21:58

Me. I haven't been coughing, just felt rough since Monday evening and have a sore throat. I felt rotten yesterday but feel a lot better today. I hope you're feeling better soon too.

Heronatemygoldfish · 08/02/2023 22:06

I'm onto about 6 weeks of not really bad but just always there sore throat now. GP on Friday. Won't budge, or the catarrh it seems to be best friends with.

Not covid, I'm pcr tested twice a week...

I had covid last month, never really shook the cough from that even after the tests turned negative, but it got really bad again last Saturday to the point I barely slept on Saturday night as I was coughing with practically every breath. To start with it was just the cough, which also made my throat sore, but then on Monday & Tuesday I also had the runny nose, blocked sinuses and sneezing. Covid test was negative though. Now it’s back to the cough and crackly lungs.

MissingMoominMamma · 08/02/2023 22:11

My voice went completely over 3 weeks ago- Dr said viral laryngitis and to rest it.

Still hoarse, swollen glands, watery eyes, tickly cough and earache now.

I’m completely fed up with it.

Twix42 · 08/02/2023 22:13

Yep and it's turned into the worst sinusitis I've ever had. Dr has just prescribed antibiotics and a steroid spray. I'm so miserable 😫

jtaeapa · 08/02/2023 22:14

I have this, so do both my teens. It's bloody miserable. Definitely not covid.

I've tested negative for Covid

The article I read said home tests are not picking it up. Sorry can't remember where I read it now, also no high temperature either.

Whatthetrolley · 08/02/2023 22:32

Yep! Ds took 11 days before we was back at school, I'm currently on day 8 and haven't made it to work yet. The first 2 days were ridiculous temperature changes and since Sunday have gone through 3 loo rolls with the sneezing and phlegm 🤢

colouringindoors · 08/02/2023 22:33

Covid. Nasal LFTs are now hugely ineffective at picking up the new variant.

I feel for you... Having a sore throat for 6 weeks is horrible. I hope you'll feel better soon xx

I had a few weeks ago, I had my DH checking my throat daily, the day after the white spots appeared I was straight to the GPs and got antibiotics. I get sore throat’s regularly (immune compromised) and I know what’s viral and what’s going to turn into a bacterial infection.

Benzocain anaesthetic spray helps, a trick an old Dr told me was aspirin gargle, not sure of the science behind it but really helps, as well as keeping on top of pain meds.

Interesting. But is it normal for Covid symptoms to last that long?

I have had Covid twice before and felt better each time after 1 week.

Yep I had it at Christmas. Sore throat followed by coughing and appalling sinusitis. I'm sorry to say it probably lasted a month. Steaming with olbas oil helped shift the sinusitis

golddustwomen · 08/02/2023 22:40

Both me and ds5 have had this for 2 weeks now. It's miserable Sad

SleepyMathematician · 08/02/2023 22:42

Yes got it now. Woke up with it Sunday and it progressed to me feeling pretty shit really quickly. I was convinced it was covid at the start of it as I had a headache and it felt similar, and also it’s going round like wildfire at work. But I tested then and yesterday and both were negative. Interesting if the tests maybe aren’t picking it up. I don’t feel quite as rubbish as I did Monday but my throat is still so sore and my glands are swollen up, plus the odd coughing and sneezing for good measure - fed up!

Havifus · 08/02/2023 22:58

I have this and was admitted to a&e with a suspected infection (pregnant with twins and dangerous for bringing on Labour) I had 2 covid tests pcr and LFT both negative. Infection marker in blood only slightly raised so should be viral however I have never had a cough and sore throat like this. Over a week now and completely miserable on top of being 31 weeks pregnant. Just hoping I wake up tomorrow and even feel a little bit better!!!

prettyrainbows · 08/02/2023 23:03

I had it a few weeks ago. I thought it was tonsillitis af first, but was a viral infection Dr said (over the phone 🙄🙄)
Took a good 2 weeks to go and I felt absolutely awful. I hope you feel better soon OP

StillMedusa · 08/02/2023 23:15

Me. Tested for Covid.. nope.
Lost my voice on last Friday, completely, having had a sore throat for a couple of days.
Horrible tickly cough that makes me retch and feel generally rough. My voice came back today albeit croaky, but I feel achey and fluey.

GrainOfSalt · 08/02/2023 23:36

Yep it varies from generally sore to awful and every now and then lulls me into a false sense of security and seems to get better. It got better for a couple of weeks and is now back with a vengeance. A combination of post nasal drip and variously hued sinusitis with accompanying intermittent cough which again sometimes seems to go away entirely.

MixedUpChameleon · 09/03/2023 18:12

How long did it end up lasting for you OP? I currently have this and it sort of comes and goes. I'm absolutely fine in myself just have this really sore throat.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 09/03/2023 18:40

DH got it last week and then shared it with me.

We're both pretty rough. DH has had conjunctivitis with his and mine has been accompanied by a long and heavy peri-period.

Nimblesandbimbles · 15/03/2023 22:32

I’m not sure if this is similar to what I’ve got at the moment. It started as a heavy cold with a tickly cough. The blocked nose & cough have now gone but my nose is still runny & my throat is sore on one side. And I’m exhausted. It’s been going on about 2 weeks now!

Whooyou · 15/03/2023 22:37

It's horrible isn't it? I've been (unfairly) blamed for everyone getting it at work. 🙄
