Does anyone else have this vile sore throat virus?

Hi everyone,

I've had a sore throat for almost two weeks now. No sign of getting better. Coughing a lot through the day, but even more at night. I get real coughing fits.

I went to see my GP, because I have never had a sore throat for so long.

The GP said it is viral and that they can't give me any medicine.

Does anyone else have it? When will this get better?

We all had terrible sore throat recently however luckily for us it came and went very quickly. Youngest dd seemed particularly bad so had her seen and swabbed by Gp and it turned out to be strep. Apparently it comes on suddenly and tends to clear up within 3-7 days but obviously can cause complications in some.

Maybe best to get swabbed just to be safe.

I had Covid for 4 weeks, was better for 6 weeks and now have this. It isn’t Covid again, it’s definitely different and my GP agrees, but they think my recent Covid has exhausted my immune system so I can’t seem to shake this off.
But I am sick of it, my Dad has just had a stroke and I am desperate to visit him but can’t due to these germs. Hideous.

WishIWasACavewoman · 15/03/2023 22:56

I had this 10 days ago, started on the 4th/5th with fatigue, headache and a sore throat, progressing to cough and running nose, sneezing etc on the 6th. Got progressively worse, with shivering overnight, sinusitis, brain fog etc and then just as I started coning out the other side on the 9th, I woke up with no voice. At all. Not a croak, not a husk. It's been a full 6 days of absolutely no voice- never had anything like this before.

The doc said acute laryngitis and gave me antibiotics. They weren't doing anything so I looked up treatments online and have given myself the recommended dose of prednisone, which I had at home. That finally seems to be working as this evening I can finally make small sounds. Wouldn't have taken this drastic step but I'm away next week for an important series of speaking engagements at work and I was getting very worried about it.

Good luck to everyone whose got it, it's a bitch

Yes! Over 3 weeks now, no more cold symptoms just a really sore throat that keeps coming and going, and blocked sinuses.

Nimblesandbimbles · 16/03/2023 08:48

Feeling quite reassured that it isn’t just me! I also had Covid just prior to this so wonder if that flattened me a bit & that’s why I can’t shake it off fully. Agree about the sore throat that keeps coming back!

timetorefresh · 16/03/2023 09:10

My Covid a few weeks ago started with headache and sore throat

TashieWoo · 16/03/2023 12:39

I’ve had it for a couple of weeks and got antibiotics on Tuesday, I think it’s improving slowly now. I also have a mouth full of ulcers, a sore tongue, sore lips and impetigo, I’m knackered and feeling so sorry for myself.

DP, baby DD and I have been on and off unwell (more on than off) since DD started nursery in Jan when I went back to work and we are all rather fed up with it now!

Lemonademoney · 16/03/2023 12:41

Oh I think there’s something like this circulating at work. It sounds horrendous so my heart goes out to you. I think it was rest, rest and more rest although one of my colleagues is now getting migraines which she thinks are linked too

Beamur · 16/03/2023 12:46

I think I have got it too. Had COVID just before Christmas.
Started as a cough, became a chest infection but I think I have picked up a virus too. Cough continuing but linked to throat. Painful sore throat for about a week, less painful now but still there for a second week. Feel tired and run down generally.

BooseysMom · 16/03/2023 13:08

Mine started with a heavy cold, so heavy I got through 3 big boxes of tissues over the course of 5 days. Then it went into my sinuses and I had an ear infection..the ear ache was horrible. Then this week I thought I had turned a corner as I felt normal again, but yesterday suddenly started sneezing and feeling shivery and have a sore throat and coughing fits. It's the 3rd week and I can't believe it's back! It looks like the whole of March will be written off due to illness

Em3978 · 16/03/2023 13:19

I had one at Christmas with total voice loss then a chest infection. Not Covid.
Son had one early Feb, total voice lost, terrible throat. Not Covid.
I had horrible headache, sore throat from hell mid Feb. Covid! (Still ill, still sore throat, 4 weeks of headaches and 6 migraines so far. Husband also same.)
Son had ANOTHER sore throat/cough etc again Not Covid (he has better immunity having had Cov at least twice in the last year. I hadn't.)

blondie87 · 16/03/2023 13:28

I’ve had 3 throat infections since January! Not usually prone to them; needed antibiotics. I hoping that it doesn’t come back for a 4th time. Been swabbed and told no future action needed and Covid tests negative so I’m none the wiser. So sore, red and with white bits on which dr said was bacterial. They are surprised that it’s taken 3 courses of antibiotics to shift.

Spectre8 · 16/03/2023 13:49

Bacterial tonsilitis here. Finally they gave me antibiotics as they could see the pus spots. I get reoccurring tonsilitis (4+ a year) so im well versed in knowing myself if I've got the viral or bacterial version. So I only go when I need antibiotics but cos they couldn't see the white spots when I first went a week ago, delaying antibiotics meant I have really suffered.

My neck was visibly swollen, it was so painful I couldn't even open my mouth wide enough to get any food in, could only sip liquids. Lost 2kg in 3days cos I basically couldn't eat and was lucky if I got 3hrs sleep a night. It also affected my voice cos of how swollen it was. I am only just starting to see the antibiotics working.

Just pisses me off that if someone has that much of a history with tonsilitis they refuse to believe u know what type you have and just cos they couldn't see the pus spots send you away so you just deteriorate badly and suffer uneccessarily until the next appt you get and then its already hit you like brick wall and they are like ooohhh yeah you need antibiotics...no shit sherlock

Urgh rant over.

DD came down with an awful throat friday eve. Saturday morning, she was struggling to swallow saliva, glands all swollen. Red ulcer looking thing on one tonsil and a white spot.

Thankfully, 111 worked as it should for a change and within an hour of calling we had been seen at a hub and she had be given 10 days of antibiotics, which are working beautifully, by monday morning, you would never have known she’d been ill.

This is the first time she’s ever been ill enough to see a dr or have antibiotics in her life and she’s 9!

Out house is full of bugs at the moment though. 2 year old has just got over a d&v bug she’s had for the last three days and yesterday, I could feel a cold coming on by the hour. Last night I went to bed and and that awful thing where you can’t breathe and can’t swallow without panicking. I’m far better this morning though.

BooseysMom · 18/03/2023 03:52

Yes there's a crazy number of bugs circulating atm. I have never been this ill over such a prolonged amount of time. I'm scared I'll lose my job as I have been signed off again. I have had antibiotics but had to stop taking them and now I'm back to square one..my throat is awful and I have bad headaches and a sore stomach and no appetite which are new symptoms.

Hooe everyone feels better soon.

blondie87 · 18/03/2023 07:38

I have had my results back and mine was a nasty case of strep A which has proven hard to shift, but after three courses of antibiotics I think it’s gone. Just left with inflammation in my throat which hopefully should heal in time.

The article I read said home tests are not picking it up. Sorry can't remember where I read it now, also no high temperature either.

Some tests are much better than others.

Fastflow, brand from Boots and some local chemists seem to be the most sensitive. The Tesco ones are utter rubbish.

Yes we did experiments when bored at home with COVID.

wineandsunshine · 18/03/2023 07:58

Yeah, I've had two episodes of bacterial tonsillitis over the past 5 weeks and lost my voice through coughing.

No Covid just this! My DS also had a chest infection and awful cough.

Oh no! I nearly lost mine from coughing too. Instead i lost most my hearing in one ear! I thought I would have to have a hearing aid! It's almost back now but I have constant tinnitus which has gone on for weeks and my ears crack too. I don't think it will ever be back to normal.

Hope you're feeling better now.

OxanaVorontsova · 25/03/2023 14:24

Yes me too, no voice, coughing, sneezing, aching it’s grim. Loads of others at work have it (school).

Oh no! Mine started with a very heavy cold and endless cough and sinusitis. Hope you get better soon.

MedievalNun · 26/03/2023 12:03

Me. Took nearly 3 weeks to fully go, and I had no voice for almost a week of it too. DH caught it from me and it's taken two weeks so far for him.

I gargled with paracetamol and drank a lot of hot lemon & honey.
