Candy stripe bedsheets

Does anyone else remember these? When I was a kid I had lovely soft candy stripe bedsheets. Mum used to wash them and put them straight back on my bed because they were my favourite.

I think they were brushed cotton, and the rainbow stripes were narrow and in soft pastel shades rather than super bright.

I'm trying to find some online in king size but nothing looks quite right. All too bright or with thick chunky stripes.

Has anyone found anything like this? A bit of a blast from the past, I know, but they were so comforting and I could do with that right now.

Ooooh I can't help with your search but yes, such nostalgia from a cosy childhood. I used to have them on my bed and when I had kids, my mum had kept them all these years and she brought them up having made cot and kids' bed sheets out of them. They're being used now as we speak. They are the best so I'll keep a look out!

I loved these and have been lucky enough to inherit a double sheet

The new ones made now are not quite the same in my experience .

Your best bet I think in terms of the feel
is going to a good fabric shop and seeing what lengths of flannel sheeting they have. May not be exactly candystripe but the feel can be the same

I remember (and loved) these. Best sheets ever 😍

Ah I love that you all know what I'm talking about. I checked with my mum to see if she still has them, and neither she nor my dad remembered them at all.

I've very envious of those of you who have some handed down. I can just imagine them. Really old and soft and slept on thousands of times.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy Thanks for that - I didn't know the difference between brushed cotton and flannel.

@TheShellBeach None there that I can see unfortunately.

I have some in my airing cupboard (from the 70s), right next to my Witney blankets.

These are what I remember from childhood. My mum has some still.

when I cleared my late mums house I threw some of those from my childhood. Part of me was tempted to keep them but they were single and I can’t sleep on them now as much as I’d love to.

I really wish she’d saved my Fred Basset bed spread though. I absolutely loved that. It was green with Fred asleep on it and the other dogs around the edge. Oh and a spider and paw prints. I’d love one of those again ❤️

@maddiemookins16mum What are Witney blankets? Are they the ones with silky bits around the edges?

Ohhhh hello nostalgia. I love them too!

Brontosaurus · 05/02/2023 08:07

The Damart ones have poor reviews sadly. They don't seem to be very good quality.

I think the chance of me finding some with the right stripe and material, in king size, and a half decent quality is pretty low.

I'm not going to stop looking though because I've been thinking about them for years and I'm feeling stubborn about it.

I'm just watching the old reruns of Brookside and Barry Grant has these on his bed. Very nostalgic seeing the ca dy stripe pillowcases (and Barry himself for that matter!)

(and Barry himself for that matter!)

Made me laugh 😂 I loved Brookside! This thread has taken me right back to my childhood

I've been looking for the original thin stripe ones for a while no luck. Occasionally original ones come up on eBay usually by Horrocks still in the packaging. Lots of second hand

I bought the ones linked to upthread, they are lovely and soft but no way will they last years, the bottom sheet already had a hole in it.

And unlike the originals which were sold as flat sheet sets the new sets come as fitted sheet/flat sheet. I have an extra deep mattress and the fitted sheet doesn't fit well so have made my own out of a king size flat sjeet

ethelredonagoodday · 08/02/2023 14:31

My gran had them. They were lovely.

DesertRose64 · 08/02/2023 14:34

There was nothing like a candy striped bedsheet and a candle wick bed spread and I still think about how loved I felt as a child when I’d be getting into bed in the winter and it was all bonny and cosie.

largeprintagathachristie · 08/02/2023 19:32

We had them as kids in the 70s and 80s and I loved them.

We had flannelette sheets in winter (often those candy-striped ones) and cotton in summer. No central heating so the flannelette sheets in winter were so, so cosy.

Northernsouloldies · 08/02/2023 19:38

Cream coloured blankets with horizontal candy stripe to match.... Soooo cosy.

Mum2jenny · 08/02/2023 19:45

Just no, never liked the candy striped flannelette sheets.
Never in my house!!!

Jarnsaxa · 08/02/2023 19:51

Try eBay. There are loads on there both new and genuine vintage ones.

postwarbulge · 08/02/2023 19:57

Candy stripe bedsheets! That is going back a bit. We had those in the Fifties!

Mum2jenny · 08/02/2023 20:03

Are they safe though wrt fire regulations as the old sheets would go up in a blaze as soon as look at them?
