Spotted on Apple maps. The field in the red circle is a solar farm so ignore that, but what about the surrounding fields with those random lines all over the place?

Now I've seen the picture, yes they are definitely archaeological trenches. They do that before developers can build now, otherwise ancient hitherto undiscovered sites would be destroyed forever.

These showed up on Google maps a few years ago near where I used to live. They turned out to be the start of massive new housing estates.

As a couple have already stated (unlike the rest who didn't read the OP) they are survey excavations.
