DD4 burps and farts smell like egg

Dd4 has been burping and farting like a trooper this evening and then started complaining of a tummy ache. Any ideas what this could be? She had diarrhoea on sunday but didn't mention anything mon or tues. She said today her poos were hard, one big one small. Obviously will get a gp appointment tomorrow if still a problem.

I used to get this a lot when I was younger. Always followed by a bad bout of diarrhoea

Letterfor · 01/02/2023 21:46

My children had sulphur burps/farts for a couple of days last week. Came with a tummy bug and the vomit stunk too 🤢 cleared up easily enough on its own.

the people saying I'm destroying the nhs by considering making a gp appointment in the morning

Nobody said this. Stop being so dramatic.

I still can't understand why you wouldn't be guided by symptoms. 'Eggy' emissions alone wouldn't be a sign of anything worrying - accompanied by other symptoms eg extreme diarrhoea, bleeding, gastric pain - I mean, anything - perhaps. And even then only if it appeared to be worsening & not looking like it would self-resolve.

You didn't need to make snippy comments at posters surprised you felt this (as described currently) warranted the GP

I don't blame OP. If she hadn't said about the GP she would get a load of replies saying 'how would we know, ask a doctor' or 'A&E NOW'

Possible constipation. Diarrhoea could be sign of overflow. I would take her to gp to rule out constipation, may need some laxatives prescribed

My son was lactose intolerant

Yes I came back to say this. Giardiasis can trigger lactose intolerance which then presents as upset tummy. Daily probiotics for children will help and maybe cutting out dairy for a couple of days. Boots sells child probiotics

I was meant to add that I would monitor how often she goes to the toilet since passing hard stool. It may be that it has sorted itself. If she is not able to go again and continues to complain of discomfort, see GP. She might look bloated or feel tender in her abdomen.

I had episodes of this about 2 or 3 times a year, for 9 years (started after I was given a salmon sandwich in a very unhygienic kitchen where there was a koi carp pond). The dreaded sulphide burps always preceded violent diarrhoea, which took about 6 - 12 hrs to manifest once the burps had started. One bout lasted weeks and I was sent for a sigmoidoscopy, which just showed a rather red bowel.

I then had gallbladder removal surgery, and as I believe is usual for surgical patients, was given a big dose of metronidazole in with my meds - metronidazole prevents post-surgical infections but is also the treatment for giardia. <whispers> I haven't had those sulphide burps since and it's been 6 years...

Sorry to derail but please tell us more about the kitchen with a koi carp pond in it, who on earth does that?

bookworm14 · 01/02/2023 22:18

My DD gets this every time she has a tummy bug. It should pass in a few days.

agnesmartin · 01/02/2023 22:20

I used to get these sometimes after eating too much rich food, or when had a bug. Found that apple cider vinegar worked pretty well/pretty quickly.

CrabDuckDuckCrab · 01/02/2023 20:24

Also, is there anything she's eaten that could do that to her burps? Boots used to sell a tikka flatbread in the Shapers range that used to make my burps STINK of egg, even though I was perfectly healthy! I had to stop eating them in the end - I was too rancid to be around Blush

Salt and pepper squid, in fact any salt and pepper dishes from a Chinese restaurant used to do this to DD and my exH.

There was a programme on channel 4 last night called Know Your Shit. Someone on there had a problem described exactly like this but was an adult. Might be worth a watch?

I'm not sure what your intention in returning to this thread is. You're not adding anything helpful like other posters have done, you're not offering support to a worried mother. Why keep commenting with criticism?

Do not tell me not to be dramatic. I am as entitled to use hyperbole IN MY OWN POST as the posters who said I was the reason they were not able to get a doctors appointment. Maybe you didn't notice the hypocrisy as you're so blinded by your disapproval of me. No idea what your problem is.

If you were as careful reading the post as you are to critique it, you would have seen that I said I would see how she was in the morning and might make a gp appointment. I've just spent the last hour cleaning up vomit from all over her bed, pyjamas and her hair so clearly my mother's intuition that something wasn't OK was correct and now I know that it's a tummy bug. And with this information I won't need a docs appointment. Are you now satisfied that I won't be clogging up the gp practice with unnecessary appointments? Maybe that's all you wanted to hear and you'll bugger off at last.

Nevermind the fact that I actually said the only reason I wrote about seeing the gp was to stop hoards of posters telling me to stop asking for medical advice on mumsnet and to get her to the doctor. But again you've missed that part as it doesn't fit your narrative of me as a pig headed, 'snippy' drama queen.

Eggy wind is typical of a tummy upset. I had it lots as a kid.
Toast, water, plain pasta and in a few days it'll be fine.

DivorceConfusion · 02/02/2023 09:28

@Stones4bones I find it fascinating when a posters comes on, asks for advice, gets advice and is then all snippy when it doesn’t suit them. Maybe take this as an opportunity to reflect on your attitude and listening skills? Your kid has got a tummy bug, it’s not nice and I hope she’s better soon. But seriously, this kind of attitude must be holding you back in life! Let it go! Try to listen to people every once in a while and open your mind, you will grow as a person🙂

Ok @Stones4bones good luck to you…

JanesSadLittleLife · 02/02/2023 12:47

@LadyChamberlain lol, I think the thread has already been derailed (hope your DD is OK today OP) so...

My job at the time involved visiting clients at their business premises, which ranged from large offices to their own bedrooms. I've seen some sights, I can tell you.

The clients were absolutely lovely people, and they lived on a sort of smallholding - there were giant aviaries with birds of prey, all sizes and shapes of rescue dogs, cats and horses, there were geese and peacocks and god knows what. I like going there but you had to watch you didn't step in something.

The guy offered to make me a sandwich for lunch and walked me from his outside office (through a dozen large fowl) to the main house and the kitchen...and right there was a large, brick-walled pond. There were massive koi in there just swimming about. Not 15 feet away were the work surfaces, lined with cat food and being patrolled by many cats and many, many flies. This lovely chap brought out a bread board and slapped half a cooked salmon on it from the fridge. He made me a sandwich and I couldn't think how to get out of it so I just ate it. The sulphur burps started 24 hrs later, and I had dreadful diarrhoea about 12 hours after that.

Grim.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/02/2023 12:52

I am asking this for a friend (ahem).

Is it THAT unusual for farts to sometimes smell like egg?

I mean isn't this why egg sandwiches are so unpopular in a confined space?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 02/02/2023 12:56

DD has this every time she eats edamame

Haha no judgement from me but mine and my DDs have never smelt like this!

I remember stuffing my face with 3 Easter eggs as a kid and was shocked at the eggy farts

AbsoluteYawns · 22/02/2023 04:30

OP what did this turn out to be and how is your child?

AbsoluteYawns · 22/02/2023 04:30
