DD4 burps and farts smell like egg

Dd4 has been burping and farting like a trooper this evening and then started complaining of a tummy ache. Any ideas what this could be? She had diarrhoea on sunday but didn't mention anything mon or tues. She said today her poos were hard, one big one small. Obviously will get a gp appointment tomorrow if still a problem.

Doesn’t need a GP. Very common in children.

Aren’t they meant to smell 😕😬

Yes, apparently so that the deaf can appreciate them too. 🤷‍♀️

@Stones4bones the government is the reason the NHS is on its knees, not you personally. But certainly people like you aren’t exactly helping the situation.

What type of person am I?

Also, is there anything she's eaten that could do that to her burps? Boots used to sell a tikka flatbread in the Shapers range that used to make my burps STINK of egg, even though I was perfectly healthy! I had to stop eating them in the end - I was too rancid to be around Blush

OP, why so snippy?

Clearly, your DC is not unwell and in need of medical attention. It is a very common part of a stomach upset, and mostly will self-resolve

It's hard to believe you genuinely think a GP trip is warranted (at this point)

CharlotteRose90 · 01/02/2023 20:36

They are called sulphur burps, it’s a stomach bug. I used to get them all the time and it’s absolutely disgusting. Mine used to last 24-48 hours.

Because I posted on chat, not Aibu, to ask for advice. I'm worried about my DD. The first reply said she had some of the same symptoms and it was a stomach ulcer. I've had some helpful replies but also loads making fun of me for saying I'd take her to see the doctor.

In fact, I didn't need to share that I'd take her to the gp. The only reason I wrote it is because of the amount of posts I've read where the OP is flamed for asking for advice INSTEAD of going straight to the doctor.

I've got 2 children and they've never had gas that smelt like this, despite having a number of tummy bugs (which I've never taken them to the gp for). I DID Google and searched on mumsnet which both threw up info about giardiasis, which sounds very unpleasant and I want her to be treated if she needs treatment.

Ds gets that with an upset stomach.

Sounds gross. Hopefully that's all it is and settles by itself. She's had tummy bugs before but never had these eggy smelling ones.

My DD gets this just before a sickness bug, we’ve had it just last week in fact

i was glad in a way, because I was well prepared for the inevitable midnight “MuuuUUUuum, I feel sick”

PeekAtYou · 01/02/2023 20:44

My son was lactose intolerant

HellcatSpangledShalalala · 01/02/2023 20:46

I get sulphur burps every couple of months, no other symptoms of a bug and they clear after 12-24 hours. Gross (and embarrassing if socialising!) but nothing to worry about. If they persist for a few days maybe then ring the docs but I wouldn't be doing tomorrow.

CrispAppleStrudels · 01/02/2023 20:47

My DD (8months at the time) had 10 days of really sulphury egg smelling pure liquid diarrhoea and wind. I was also wondering about giardiasis or rotavirus. We were on holiday and managed to get an appt with the local GP, who said they would only do a stool sample after 14days. It resolved itself by day 13 and didn't come back 🤷🏻‍♀️

Should add on holiday in the UK, so it wasn't a local water supply thing.

They are dreadful for both the person carrying it and any one close. Try and get her to have some fluids and rest. I used to be up all night with mine. The doctors never figured out what caused mine actually but I had them frequently.

mindutopia · 01/02/2023 20:52

Dh had giardiasis. He was shitting constantly. And shat the bed and all the way to the toilet. I think you’d know. I’d give it a few days on b lol and foods and some probiotic drinks and see how she’s feeling.

Yes I am mentally preparing for this. She's quote hardy so got a chance that she'll wake up better

She’s had diarrhoea once and a tummy ache - she doesn’t need a doctor appointment. Why would a four year old have an ulcer?!

JanesSadLittleLife · 01/02/2023 20:57

I had episodes of this about 2 or 3 times a year, for 9 years (started after I was given a salmon sandwich in a very unhygienic kitchen where there was a koi carp pond). The dreaded sulphide burps always preceded violent diarrhoea, which took about 6 - 12 hrs to manifest once the burps had started. One bout lasted weeks and I was sent for a sigmoidoscopy, which just showed a rather red bowel.

I then had gallbladder removal surgery, and as I believe is usual for surgical patients, was given a big dose of metronidazole in with my meds - metronidazole prevents post-surgical infections but is also the treatment for giardia. <whispers> I haven't had those sulphide burps since and it's been 6 years...

Beautiful3 · 01/02/2023 21:19

A good probiotic would help.

Tiredmummy2014 · 01/02/2023 21:20

My daughter had eggy burps once and she was sick that evening and a bit the following day. Hasn't had them since thankfully

I didn't say that she did? Why do you think that I did?

A GP apt? Seriously?

Thisthattheother1 · 01/02/2023 21:23

I had this when I was 13 and still remember the egg smell. It turned out I had grumbling appendix and ended up in hospital for 4 days. All those saying op is overreacting you should be ashamed of yourselves. She feels something isn’t right and as myself and other posters have shown it may not just be a tummy bug

Thank you - I am glad I asked despite the people saying I'm destroying the nhs by considering making a gp appointment in the morning. I've jad lots of very helpful advice including yours. If nothing else I will keep a close eye on her tonight
