How often do you pay for self care luxuries?

Today I had an hour to kill before picking DS up from nursery and decided to go for a cheap manicure, the first time in years.

I’ve been to the hairdresser twice in the last 7 years, I have my eyebrows waxed once every few months, and that is it.

When I was in the nail salon regulars were in and out having treatments and it got me thinking that maybe I’ve let myself go.

I left my job last year to look after DS and DP went back to work full time. When we were both working we both did part time but worked out our income would only be marginally less if I quit and he went back full time.

It is “our money” and he would never have a problem with me treating myself but of course when i haven’t worked for the money, I would never have big blow outs.

What are your circumstances and how often do you pay for things like this for yourself?

I have a haircut roughly every two months and a twice yearly colour if that.

I sometimes get my nails done and get waxed but not often!

I live alone, reasonable income. I've tried manicures/pedicures etc., but prefer to do them myself. My working week is really busy and I find having to make/stick to an appointment a pain/something else to fit in.

I have a massage now and then but always wonder if I've just wasted the cash (haven't found anyone I love).

I now buy really nice products and do it all at home.

After a rough few months health wise I use one of my days off to do absolutely naff all. Facemask, nails, hair mask, yoga at home, read a book. I come out of it glowing and very relaxed.

Other than that I have my hair cut every six weeks.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 31/01/2023 21:50

Haircut every six weeks (it's a shorter style).

Eyebrow shape and pedicure every couple of months.

Do everything else myself.

Thecoldcrew · 31/01/2023 21:54

hair every 3 months, massage monthly, regular podiatry.
I don’t really buy new clothes etc and prefer to spend money on self care

KangarooKenny · 31/01/2023 21:54

Haircut every 6-8 weeks.
Eyebrows tinted every 5 weeks , because I’ve got none without it !
Other than that, I do it myself.

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2023 21:57

Well my self care looks a bit different to yours but I indulge myself in other ways regularly and feel no guilt for any of it. Having spent years being a SAHM I now make the absolute most of having a bonus wage 😂

addictedtotheflats · 31/01/2023 21:57

Lashes every time i go out out, henna brows every 8 weeks and botox every 4-6 months. Hair probably once a year. New clothes every month. Just booked a spa day aswell. I also go to a PT once a week and have a gym membership. Love a bit of self indulgence

Cannottryasp00 · 31/01/2023 21:58

Hair cut three times a year ,toes painted and gelled May and end of June …am rubbish doing own toe nails and bikini wax sometime over summer if having a holiday.

Campervangirl · 31/01/2023 22:04

I get my hair trimmed every 6 wks, lashes every three weeks by a friend, nails done every 2 weeks by a family member (don't spend a lot).
I'm not polished or glam.
Last week I had some fillers in my face for the first time and I feel fab, best money I've ever spent, I don't look different, I look more awake, not so tired.
Definitely worth investing in yourself, if it makes you feel good about yourself

Newtrix · 31/01/2023 22:18

I have a full body massage every fortnight. Absolutely bliss.

Icequeen01 · 31/01/2023 22:21

My hair is cut and coloured every 5 weeks. I have my nails done (gel) every 3 weeks.

Blueisthecolor · 31/01/2023 22:23

Hardly ever. I get my hair cut about once maybe twice a year. Haven't had any beauty treatments or nails done in a couple of years. I used to get lash lift and tint on my eye lashes before going on holiday but last time it wasn't very good so I haven't bothered last couple of times. Think I'll get it done this time and it's great when they do it properly!

I could afford to to get treatments done a lot more but I do think it's very expensive and a bit of a waste of money. We are likely to have a much larger income soon though so I might indulge a bit more!

I really don't get the thing about getting ur nails done all the time. Think last time I got them done was about 5yrs ago. I'd much rather get my eye lashes done instead or even my eyebrows. Only ever had gel nails I wouldn't get the extensions I cldnt cope with them being so long.

YorkieTheRabbit · 31/01/2023 22:33

Haircut every seven weeks
Roots every four or five weeks (I do them myself)
Only had gel nails done once and I hated them. I use Dior nail glow twice a week and my nails look fine.
Do my own eyebrows
I use decent quality skincare, Elemis cleansing balm and marine cream moisturiser, plus various other brands. I enjoy a facial or massage occasionally but not enough to want to go monthly.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 31/01/2023 22:37

Never.

HelloBunny · 31/01/2023 22:39

Hair twice a year, sometimes once.
No beauty treatments. I like to buy make-up & perfume, usually in the Sale.

Today I brought myself for coffee & cake, and got a women’s magazine. A new book is my fave treat.

Clothes shopping, used to love it. Not bothered now. A charity shop find is more exciting now than a spree.

GrazingSheep · 31/01/2023 22:50

Hair colour every 8 weeks, cut every 2nd time
Brows threaded and tinted every 3 months
Manicure every 4 weeks but just nail and cuticle work - no polish
Pedicure twice a year before holidays but remove the polish when I get home -
had a melanoma scare a few years ago on a nail and keep them all polish free since then

whiteroseredrose · 31/01/2023 22:58

Haircut and roots done 4 times a year. Legs waxed annually before holiday.

That's it. I don't like being fiddled with so the faff of massages and facials is really stressful. I only do the 3hr cut and colour under sufferance.

Rebel2023 · 31/01/2023 23:01

Haircut every 6-12 months and er, that's it
I thread my own brows, do my own nails and dermaplane my face
Have a sports massage once in a blue moon and vow to have it done more often and then.. life happens

weegiemum · 31/01/2023 23:05

My dd2 is a final year beauty therapy student so I get most things done for free or at cost for materials.

She also dyes and trims my hair. Job done!

SweetSakura · 31/01/2023 23:10

I get my nails done about once a month, hair every couple of month.
My main indulgences are books (and more books!), Candles, bath oils, and jewellery. I am house bound quite a lot (albeit still able to work full time) so don't feel bad making sure I can have a good time at home.

I'd drop all these before i'd drop spending on the children though, but while I can afford it I feel zero guilt!!

declutteringmymind · 31/01/2023 23:17

My biggest self care expense is my cleaner. It means I can spend an afternoon a week doing what I like.

I get my haircut 3 times a year, balayage lasts about a year.

Eyebrows every 8 weeks

Botox twice a year.

Good skincare bought on offer.

1 or 2 spa days a year

Exercise is YouTube videos and walks/runs etc

My AirPods have really helped me relax- they've literally changed my life.

Crochet is helping me chill out too

Nails, blow dries etc all done at home.

Overthebow · 31/01/2023 23:25

Haircuts about twice a year, until recently that was it as we prioritised buying house and overpaying the mortgage. Now we’re in a good position and also eating more I’ve added regular spa days and massages. I refused to spend more until we were financially comfortable though.

Hups · 01/02/2023 03:03

A cut and blow dry monthly and that's it.
Everything else I do myself. I don't wear make up or do my nails.

mondaytosunday · 01/02/2023 04:22

Hair about four times a year, pedicure the same, facial every couple months if possible. I don't wear make up much since lockdown plus I don't work in an office.
I was much more into it when younger but couldn't afford it other than haircuts!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 01/02/2023 13:59

I'm on disability benefits, live alone and don't work
My one self care treat is a hair cut and colour every 6 weeks for £45
( ex salon hairdresser has a home salon now)
I have very short hair
