Any fans of The Archers (Radio 4 drama)?

For those who might not be aware, on the Radio Addicts board there is a long-running series of threads discussing The Archers. They've actually been running continuously since April 2014 (the threads, that is; The Archers itself has been running longer than many of us have been alive!), so we are approaching our 10th anniversary. Star

If you are interested, we are currently on thread 145 (no, really) - it's a friendly crowd:

you could also point out that as a soap, you can start with the Archers any time you like and within 5 minutes you will know as much as anyone else Grin

StaceySolomonSwash · 31/01/2023 14:19

I'd forgotten about the Archers threads! I used to post on them under a previous ID.

BeatriceBatchelor · 31/01/2023 14:25

I remember the Archers' threads would occasionally appear in Active Convos and I would think "what sort of saddo listens to that boring stuff?"

My curiosity got the better of me and I can now say proudly "I am that sort of saddo"

Well done, Beatrice! Why should the rest of us have to suffer alone?

(It's actually quite good at the moment, but that's how they lure you in. Prepare for another 10-year lull very shortly ...)

patsshopping · 31/01/2023 14:33

I would like to enthusiastically raise my hand. I have loved The Archers since I listened with my mum when I was a kid.

DadDadDad · 31/01/2023 14:42

By the way, I'm an idiot and should have typed April 2013 in my OP - that's why the 10th anniversary is approaching.

I turned on the radio in my car yesterday (I haven't done this in years) and it came on. About 20 years ago I was really into the archers. I realised I knew nothing about the plot and wondered how I could find out. Now I know!

DadDadDad · 31/01/2023 14:54

Yes, @pigpinkstockings , despite what @Brefugee says, there are posters on those threads with long memories, who are always happy to answer questions about longstanding characters and their inter-connections, and explain obscure references etc.

sorry, what i meant was that you can pick it up easily if you're a new listener, or come back into it after a decade of absence (like me) and pick it up easily...

pigpinkstockings · 31/01/2023 14:56

I realise I can't remember any story lines or characters. I'll need to listen a bit before remembering the really old actors!

Fab. And such a coincidence seeing this thread today.

DadDadDad · 31/01/2023 14:57

There's something in that, @Brefugee - there is a certain continuity, so I often miss it for long periods, but there will always be familiar characters and ongoing storylines when I return.

Brefugee · 31/01/2023 15:00

and (as a recent returner) i can definitely attest to the knowledge in the threads. Deffo helped me a lot

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2023 15:18

I used to listen regularly, and enjoyed the threads, but I got behind last year and then stopped listening. I'd quite like to start again but could do with a catch-up - odd bits I've caught by accident suggest the scriptwriters have been messing up a few characters.

Buttalapasta · 31/01/2023 15:24

Thank you. I started listening 40 years ago but stopped during lockdown and have just started listening sporadically again.

LillianGish · 31/01/2023 16:05

Sometimes the thread is actually better than the programme - it's the thread that keeps me listening through the lulls (we used to joke that our tagline should be "We listen so you don't have to") The friendliest and most good natured thread on Mumsnet imho.

I admit to raising an eyebrow at the mathematics there... 🤣

(Come on MN, we need an edit button!)

Poppins2016 · 31/01/2023 16:30

I think The Archers threads are ones I'd miss the most if I left MN... they act as a lovely listening companion. 🙂

Archers

Excellent!

patsshopping · 31/01/2023 16:51

For anyone who is thinking about starting to listen or returning to listen, on Sunday 22nd of January there was a huge event which will impact on the story lines for decades to come. Please come/come back and check it out.

Tintackedsea · 06/02/2023 23:04

I lurk on the Archers thread because I listen to the film so I'm always a week behind.

The thread is better than the show and keeps me listening!

notprincehamlet · 06/02/2023 23:28

The rot set in when Nigel fell off Lower Loxley and they started recasting characters

RandomCatGenerator · 07/02/2023 00:14

I love the threads but I have given up recently because the show had some really crap storylines.

What was the huge storyline on 22 Jan? Can’t be a spoiler if it’s in the past?

Stereotypical posh woman died I think.

I was more devastated by Jazzer wanting to marry Tracey.

Stereotypical posh woman died I think.

You mean the daughter of a publican who had a child out of wedlock in her teens? Wink
