Any fans of The Archers (Radio 4 drama)?

For those who might not be aware, on the Radio Addicts board there is a long-running series of threads discussing The Archers. They've actually been running continuously since April 2014 (the threads, that is; The Archers itself has been running longer than many of us have been alive!), so we are approaching our 10th anniversary. Star

If you are interested, we are currently on thread 145 (no, really) - it's a friendly crowd:

You mean the daughter of a publican who had a child out of wedlock in her teens?

She had changed into the stereotype a pp mentioned, one could argue.

The threads are too cliquish, in my opinion, aside from one or two people, and too much squabbling about something or other, or who has the most Archers knowledge. Not very friendly to newcomers either, that I've seen.

It's my guilty watch because I agree with a pp that the storylines are crap and it's gone downhill in recent years.

Oh. Why is her death so much more important than any other deaths or departures?

It's possible that many on MN who are Archers fans may identify with her. 😁

Because the actress playing her mother retired so she was expected to die soon, not JD. And her husband had heart problems earlier in the year, so he was a more likely candidate.

And because across 5 (sort of) siblings with a spread of about 35 years between them, there’s no one pulling them together anymore. Including a very young man with childhood trauma who motherless all over again.

Ahhhhh. This is a very helpful explanation, thank you.

&
@DadDadDad

love it and especially the omnibus version on the weekend with the country folk style music! Haha

Including a very young man with childhood trauma who motherless all over again. Ruairi is 21 this year .@HiccupHorrendousHaddock

Currently (well not anymore, recently sacked) working as a male escort.

I know - a very young man, and sex work isn't exactly known for attracting well balanced, mentally healthy people, is it? I feel very sorry for Ruairi, he's got a lot of baggage for a lad his age.

I’m sorry to hear that @augustglory . In my five years of lurking (I’m always a week or more behind the posts) I have never noticed those attitudes.

Oh yes @JoeGrundyWasMyRoleModel They discussed it amongst themselves at times as it was becoming noticeable. I stay out of these things but found it very distasteful. OP here is no longer a regular poster on the threads so may not have noticed. There have been flounces, deregs and personal attacks

RandomCatGenerator · 12/02/2023 12:09

@augustglory it got much better. One or two of the aggressive posters were called out by others (3 or 4 months ago) and off they went. It improved the tone and quite a few lurkers came out of the shadows to introduce themselves, which was very nice.

I haven’t been on in a month or so as the storylines lost interest for me entirely, but the threads were very nice.

LuzzBightyearzz · 12/02/2023 12:13

Probably not a popular opinion but I stopped listening when Pip was out of hospital 5 mins after having a c section and then the writers couldn't even be bothered to research that newborn nappies don't smell!! I know, I took it personally. But I found I had more time for faffing around on the internet other hobbies. And I'd listened so long I remember poor Greg's death in (?) 2003.

It has simmered down for now, and I hope it stays that way for longer this time, but they didn't all go after the last spat I observed. I nearly stopped reading myself after one argument following a racial stereotype made, the person who made it is still there and the person who challenged no longer appears to post. I nearly reported that to Mumsnet.

I will hide the threads if or when it all boils up again.
