No one in my family have heard of it, have you?

They've moved it to 90 seconds to midnight today.

It's always baffled me that it even exists.

Yes I’ve heard of it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/01/2023 19:19

Yes heard of it and been through a few.

MzMarple · 24/01/2023 19:22

I hadn't heard of it, until it popped up on my newsfeed today. I had a quick Google as it did panic me a bit. I thought something serious was happening.

Turns out it's a totally pointless thing. It's just to make us aware. Think we are all aware of the shit that's went down/going doing Hmm

CinderellasBoot · 24/01/2023 19:23

The dawn of AI like never before 🙈

Letthecarhuntbegin · 24/01/2023 19:23

What was it yesterday?

It’s kind of a cool idea and also kind of silly.

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2023 19:24

Yes I've heard of it we are now closer to destruction than ever before I expected covid to move us closer but it didn't putin did

DifferenceEngines · 24/01/2023 19:24

It baffles me. I think it had a use once, but no longer.

100 it's now 90

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/01/2023 19:25

Never heard of it

Piscesmumma1978 · 24/01/2023 19:26

I was surprised COVID didn't move it. I wonder if Germany's tank announcement has had an impact.

It is strange. What happens if we get to midnight and nothing changes?

The same as before, we carry on till the next 1 comes along and the next and so on.

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2023 19:25

100 it's now 90

Thanks!

Why’s it moved?

Alighttouchonthetiller · 24/01/2023 19:29

I hate it. It makes me feel worried and it's something I can do nothing about.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/01/2023 19:30

Yes I’ve heard of it, I forget about it until a headline when it’s moved. I think it’s scary.

I think the point is that there'll be nobody to move it on to midnight - and nobody to report it to.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/01/2023 19:28

The same as before, we carry on till the next 1 comes along and the next and so on.

I don’t think it has ever struck midnight.

It will never reach midnight because that would be Armageddon wouldn’t it, I think we will all be too preoccupied to bother about announcing it through the silly clock.

Letthecarhuntbegin · 24/01/2023 19:33

I think it would be more effective if it was sometimes ‘three o clock in the afternoon’.

It’s been X minutes/seconds to midnight for decades and decades, it loses its effect after a while.

DifferenceEngines · 24/01/2023 19:38

It started off being about the potentiontial for all out nuclear war. However, they have no formal system to determine how it moves, and they have added in a whole bunch of other factors. It's very unscientific.

RudolphTheGreat · 24/01/2023 19:42

Do we all spontaneously combust if it reaches midnight?

DonttouchthatLarry · 24/01/2023 19:51

Yes I first heard of it in 1984 thanks to the Iron Maiden song 'Two Minutes to Midnight'.

Explodingatomickittens · 24/01/2023 22:01

Excuse me for my compete ignorance but now maby seconds & it this the closest it's ever been to midnight?

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 24/01/2023 22:04

I'd heard of it but never really knew what it was. Then I saw a headline about it earlier, started reading it, started feeling really really anxious. Stopped reading it.

I'm none the wiser about what it is/ how it works/ what it means.

Furrybootstoday · 24/01/2023 22:06

Yes it's the closest it's ever been to midnight. Ukraine and climate change are pretty serious

This

it’s like when you threaten your kids and count to 3. It’s been 2 and three quarters, now 2 and 4 5ths.

Sleepwalkingintothewall · 24/01/2023 22:15

Can we have sex based doomsday clocks because something tells me men are doomed far earlier than women.

I can imagine picking through the male remains of zombie victims as women rule the streets because we have had so much practice carrying the mental load (did I get the bullet order in, have I sorted torch batteries, first aid kit, did I pay off the local protection gang etc etc)
