Doomsday Clock

No one in my family have heard of it, have you?

They've moved it to 90 seconds to midnight today.

It's always baffled me that it even exists.

OP posts:

Germany giving Ukraine tanks must be very serious so if it's moved the clock hands

Liebig · 24/01/2023 22:20

ITT people who never read or watched Watchmen.

If the clock was accurate, it would be past midnight, given we're already double fucked by climate change alone, ignoring all the actual causes that produced that which aren't being addressed.

Break out the good stuff and party.

GoAGoGo · 24/01/2023 22:26

Oh no, we're all gonna die 😱 I've got around 90 minutes to finish off all the Christmas booze.

It’s the war in general I think. Not the Germany thing.

Didn’t it start at 7 minutes to midnight all those decades ago? They really should’ve started at noon or something to give themselves a bit more wiggle room.

Anyway, it’s a stupid thing. Unscientific and seems to exist only for headlines and to scare folk!

EmmaEmerald · 24/01/2023 22:56

I find it odd that posters are saying it scares them. It's just a mad invented ...thing....with no meaning.

Tallulah28 · 24/01/2023 23:18

Yep. I’ve heard of it and I get the email bulletins also. I read them religiously.

Bowbellsx · 24/01/2023 23:30

What is it ?

What’s the doomsday clock ?

Look it up

GoAGoGo · 25/01/2023 00:02

Well that's rather disappointing. I waited to see what would happen and.... nothing!
Ah well.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 25/01/2023 00:18

I've just read some more about it. It's actually quite interesting. Still slightly scary that the 'experts' think we are so close to doomsday, but interesting.

Iwantabloodypizza · 25/01/2023 06:16

It’s just a load of bollocks.

Imagine what it would have been at the pinnacle of the great plague.

No point worrying over something that’s made up. Just don’t read the news and you won’t have anything to worry over.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/01/2023 06:26

Looks likes the furthest away it's ever been was in 1991 and that was 17 minutes. I mean not a couple of hours or even an hour. 17 minutes. Most os the time it operates as a Doomsday egg timer rather than clock.

ShippingNews · 25/01/2023 06:32

Reminds me of the " Millennium Bug" designed to scare us all . Many people did think the world was coming to an end.

What?! The Y2K bug was an evidence based computer problem, no one thought the world was ending.

sad state of affairs if that's become apocryphal.

To be fair, it was going to cause massive problems. The reason it didn't was because many many computer programmers spent vast amounts of time fixing it.

My council's approach to the known heating meter issue was ' we'll bring in an engineer for each complaint '
It did help id a whole load of giro drops I spose. Mind you it was January and being without heating whilst we waited wasn't fun..

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/01/2023 07:17

Well we're in the sh*t then, the clocks go forward an hour on March 26th. 😱

This. It seems so dumb to me. Nobody really knows.
