Constantly ill after covid

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 16/01/2023 14:31

Is anyone just wrung out from being constantly ill?

I had covid in October 21, pretty bad but not in hospital or anything. In bed for 2 weeks, off work for 3. In hindsight, should have taken more time off.

Since then, I seem to get a cough, a viral infection or an ear infection, or a stomach upset, or a migraine every other week. I'm so exhausted from being ill all the time. Sick to the back teeth of it.

There's no time inbetween ilnnesses to recover. I started a new job 5 months ago and I can't keep takling time off, but luckily I work from home so I can work from bed and I don't have to commute.

Anyone else the same?

What can I do to stop getting ill?

I'm the same. I caught it twice in six months, both times from work. I'm back to back ill and I've had life-ruining PMS, trouble sleeping to boot and joint pain to boot. I'm a carer my job is only getting more physically demanding.

Sadly Covid fucks with your immune system, so it is unsurprising that loads of us are feeling run down and ill and catching more things than usual.

Given how new it is there isn’t a lot of research out there, but as a ME sufferer I can recommend looking at your gut health. I’ve started taking a combination probiotic and prebiotic, plus extra vitamins. Covid absolutely wrecked my fairly well controlled IBS and I’m now unwell a lot of the time, so trying to balance my microbiome is my main go to currently (because the IBS triggers the ME and it's all deeply tedious!)

Bear in mind I’m not a doctor (well, I am, but not of medicine!) but this is what I’ve taken away from following various healthcare people on social media and from my own research into ME/CFS which I have been dealing with since long before covid.

I’m sorry you feel shit, OP. Good luck.

Sorry to hear you are suffering OP that’s really rubbish for you.

As boozebarge says, COVID fucks with your immune system and this constant illness will be the Norm for everyone if we don’t reduce COVID infections.

I don’t understand why this isn’t more well known and in the press more.

As well as improving your microbiome also suggest you do everything you can to reduce your chance of catching COVID again and other infections. HEPA filters can help to clean the air if you have people visit you at home. Otherwise FFP2 masks when in high risk situations for colds and COVID as we now understand they are airborne.

Iam4eels · 13/03/2023 16:43

I had covid around the same time and my immune system is also still shit, I am catching everything and because I work in a school that means every single big that's going around. I don't just catch them though, I catch them and they know me for six. I was off for two weeks with a chest infection, a week with some sort of viral infection, a week with tonsillitis, three days with conjunctivitis in both eyes, and this morning I've woken up with a stinking head cold so I'm ill again.

MaidOfSteel · 13/03/2023 16:44

I've been the same since Covid last summer, OP. I seem to always have a cough, catch every bug going and I feel even more rundown than I thought possible. I don't know what I can do to get back to where I was, and even that wasn't good.

Flowersinmai · 13/03/2023 16:50

Have you asked for blood tests to check your nutrient levels? Vitamin D etc. Low levels of those can cause you to more prone to illness. Hope you get it sorted.

nilsmousehammer · 13/03/2023 16:54

I hear you OP. I'm coming up to 3 months post covid and am still nowhere near back to where I was before. The exhaustion's horrible.

Todaynotalways · 13/03/2023 16:58

I haven't caught every disease under the sun (thankfully) but I've never got 100% better since Covid in April '22.

I'm still coughing, I have post viral asthma, I've got suspected arthritis in my hands.

I swear I used to be healthy - but it feels like my immune system took a massive wallop!

Tinypetunia · 13/03/2023 17:03

I am 3 months into post viral fatigue and feeling like total shit nearly all the time. There are some good days but followed by days when I'm shaky, tired and generally unwell. It feels relentless. I've never been so poorly for so long. I know others are worse off than I am but it doesn't help.

Badger1970 · 13/03/2023 17:14

I had Covid, caught days after my 1st vaccine. Absolutely floored me and I was unwell for nearly 4 months. Then had my 2nd vaccine, and was again knocked off my feet.

Haven't had a 3rd or 4th Covid jab for this very reason, and my immune system is more much robust even though I'm diabetic. DH however has had them (cardiac issues) and has been constantly unwell all winter, with one virus after another.

I really think people need to question the vaccines as well as Covid....

Doliveira · 13/03/2023 17:25

Also unwell since Covid, struggling to keep my head above water, sleeping badly, allergic to foods now, inflammation in my hands, rosacea, cold all the time, sneezy, all sorts of shit.

Whatsthisthing · 13/03/2023 17:30

I’ve had Covid 5 times now (I’ve had all three vaccines for my age group). The 1st, 4th and 5th bouts made me really unwell. After the 4th time I was constantly ill with coughs, colds and sore throats for about 3 months. Prior to Covid I cannot remember the last time I had so much as a cold.

Justcashnosweets · 13/03/2023 17:36

I've had Covid twice now, and having had the booster last month for a new job, I can say that I have probably felt more unwell for a longer period of time since the booster than I have after Covid. 😬

Sugarfish · 13/03/2023 17:38

Yeah I get every cold going now, not sure if it’s covid that wrecked my immune system or if it’s lack of exposure to viruses during lock down

Habbyhadno · 13/03/2023 21:39

I had covid last week. I'm not testing positive anymore but I feel horrific still, really tired and emotional. It's really knocked me. My poor daughter has had 5 weeks of illness: ear infection, hand foot and mouth, sick bug and now covid. I really fear for her immune system - she's only 3 and constantly ill. I'm over it now, it's too much!

Choconuttolata · 13/03/2023 21:49

Watch this, Covid affects your immune system. I am over 2 years post infection and have Long Covid. I still struggle with catching other illnesses and then it knocking me for six, but it is better than last winter. I found taking extra vitamin D (2000-4000IU), methylated B vitamins, a multivitamin and vitamin C with zinc helps.

HappyHolidai · 13/03/2023 22:00

I'm 3 months in (13 weeks today - yay!), and after 6 weeks of phased return today was my first full day of work.

I just can't do it 😫. Want to cry; I missed my afternoon nap and just feel utterly wrong out. And I'm supposed to do it all over again tomorrow. And the car needs its MOT but I'll have to cancel (also tomorrow) because I can't manage the not-very-long walk back from the garage & back to collect car. 😔

I am a lot better than I was and had 2 good days on Friday and Saturday but this afternoon was terrible. 😞

Beamur · 13/03/2023 22:03

COVID just before Christmas and what feels like a continuous procession of bugs and viruses ever since.
Colds, chest infection, incredibly sore throat for nearly a week currently plus earache and eye infections.
Bloody great.

EllaB22 · 13/03/2023 22:13

Yes, I seem to rotate between breathlessness, headaches, sore throat and aches and pains.

Wheresthebeach · 13/03/2023 23:02

Yep…got Covid in the first round and was sick for months. Now every cold turns into a chest infection.I’m asthmatic and it use to be once a year, since I got Covid I’m on antibiotics and prednisone every few months. Now classed as CEV.

Absolutely not trying to scaremonger by implying that people are getting HIV from their Covid vaccines. Those are single use shots, love.

It's not lack of exposure to viruses!

I am not an antivaxxer in any way but I am someone who does their own research, and the covid jabs just seem to do more harm than good, in recent light...

🙄 That's exactly the key line of an anti-vaxxer. Perhaps you need to practice more?
