Thoughts on housing benefit fraud?

Would you report it?

Does it depend on who it is?

My dsd's mother is doing this basically, i was telling a friend about it and she was shocked that I am not reporting it. I explained that im not because of dsd.

I have always hated it when people abuse the system such as she is doing. Claiming full housing benefit, but driving an expensive car, living with partner who earns far higher than the average wage. Then there's the bragging, which is very tasteless imo.

Anyway, i have my opinion but i stay out of it, none of my business. But my friend was almost annoyed at me and felt very strongly.

What would you do?

I would leave it.

keepareaclean · 13/01/2023 21:19

Is the fraud that she is claiming she lives alone?

XenoBitch · 13/01/2023 21:20

I would run back to the Daily Mail who sent you, and get a fucking life.

I'd stay out of it

LlynTegid · 13/01/2023 21:21

I would because of the bragging if nothing else.

I'd hope you take the same view out of tax dodgers.

Has anyone actually met anyone who brags about claiming benefits they're not entitled too? It's always on here, along with the flash car, rich bloke and holidays, but IRL, like never.

IDontCareMatthew · 13/01/2023 21:28

If she's 'living with a partner' then how is she committing fraud?

gravyriceandchips · 13/01/2023 21:29

She will be staying she is living with just her dd

But yep, I'd mind my own business.

Anisina · 13/01/2023 21:30

Always 'my friend says' bollocks.

Nope!
I am on benefits, and I am too scared to even sell second stuff online in case I get reported. It is a miserable way to live.

Always 'my friend says' bollocks.

And always on a Friday or Saturday night.

ilovesooty · 13/01/2023 21:33

Why are you gossiping about her to other people?

gravyriceandchips · 13/01/2023 21:37

@XenoBitch
I know that is so crap.

I was thinking about today because I've sold some stuff on vinted and if you go over a certain amount on eBay or whatever I think you need to declare it. On stuff you've already paid the tax for because you bought it yourself.

I'm no where near that amount but it still doesn't make any sense.

Never heard of this either 🤔

gravyriceandchips · 13/01/2023 21:38

The bragging is prob Instagram posts etc which we all know are always not real life

Amazes me how many people think it is fine.

NearlyMidnight · 13/01/2023 21:54

Always report if you can. Cheats undermine society which is based on fairness and consent. There's collective consent to pay tax and provide a benefits system because we believe no-one should be abandoned in times of need and we all think "there but for the grace of god go I"
But if we see people abusing it we feel cheated, made a fool of, like a mug - and then there starts to be resentment, and people vote to come down harder on benefits claimants.... etc etc

You would.

daisyjgrey · 13/01/2023 22:03

No. Benefit fraud is a drop in the ocean, I really don't care.

Anisina · 13/01/2023 22:05

No one cares about people on the internet making shit up to get the 'tax payers' frothing.

Apart from the usual frothers who live for this shit.
