Anybody tried cannabis for migraines?

And if so, did it help?

I'm on day 7 of a migraine and getting desperate. If anybody has had success with cannabis, would you mind sharing how much you needed and in what form?

I got told to take 900mg -1200mg aspirin in one go by a neurologist and that helped me. Haven't tried cannabis for it but wanted to share the aspirin tip I was given recently as they're awful and 7 days sounds rotten.

dolor · 12/01/2023 20:32

I've used it for a while in small amounts for pain, migraine included. If I can suggest you make some edibles if you can, unless you have a source for medically prescribed cannabis?

CheesyCrumpet · 12/01/2023 20:37

I tried it once for migraines, it's the first and last time.
It gave me a migraine so severe that I seriously thought I was having a brain haemorrhage.
Never again.

CheesyCrumpet · 12/01/2023 20:40

Just to add that the neurologist advised me to take two extra strength paracetamol together with two ibuprofen at the start of the migraine.
I tried that and it worked, it killed it dead before it had chance to take hold. Brilliant. So that's what I do now.

belimoo · 12/01/2023 21:56

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately no amount of painkillers in any quantity or combination makes any difference.

I don't have a prescription unfortunately but could possibly get hold of a vape or make edibles.

See a doctor

Dabbling with drugs is not the answer

Palmfrond · 12/01/2023 22:09

I don’t get migraines but I do occasionally enjoy recreational cannabis and honestly taking it for migraines sounds like a terrible idea. Really terrible. And taking it as an edible even worse.

On the other hand I’ve heard that psilocybin has been trialled (?) for treatment of headaches, with some success, but either way surely you’d want to see a doctor as first point of contact?

Sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery.

AndyWarholsPiehole · 12/01/2023 22:13

Have you had any medication from your doctor? Sumatriptan works wonders at stopping a migraine from developing for me.

belimoo · 12/01/2023 22:37

Unfortunately I've seen a dr many times. Triptans work sometimes but this one just isn't budging, hence the question about cannabis. It has a good reputation for pain relief so I'm surprised by the responses here.

Have you tried pseudoephedrine (nurofen cold and flu OTC) .

Was recommended by a pharmacist to a friend for a bad headache like yours. We were sceptical but it worked.

Aspirin mega dose sounds good too

QueenMabs · 12/01/2023 22:41

Sorry I know it's migraine. not a headache.

Get week soon

Whatineed · 12/01/2023 22:42

Did they test your blood sugar levels when you went to the GP? It's one of the reasons I had hideous migraines for a long time.

NotMeNoNo · 12/01/2023 22:46

It's worth trying doctor/ out of hours; they might come up with a different triptan or painkiller. I had some Voltarol suppositories prescribed once, they were very effective, also now have Rizatriptan melts. Gets over the digestive difficulty/ absorption problem. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh for goodness sake

IDontCareMatthew · 12/01/2023 22:54

Yes @MissMaple82 oh for goodness sake! Right back at ya love!

RedCarsGoFaster · 12/01/2023 23:00

Made it ten times worse. I used to use cannabis recreationally as a bored teenager and gave it up when it started to give me bad headaches. Turned out its migraine.

Tried it since then, always gives me a migraine and when tried to use it to treat a migraine it made it into one of the worst I've ever had.

Unfortunately when you're desperate you'll try anything and snake oil salesmen will promise you it'll cure all your ills.

Have you taken triptans? Are they tablets or sprays? You need to see your GP.

Mumsnet is not a fan of drugs. Some of us are open minded, the majority of users are anti drugs.

Mrspostitnote · 13/01/2023 07:58

My family member does Botox injections for migraines through the nhs maybe ask if your suitable for this I don’t know the ins and outs of it all but could be worth asking your doctor about clinics in leeds and Bradford but surely there available elsewhere if you’re nowhere near.

Marsde · 13/01/2023 08:04

Get your GP to refer you to a good neurologist and ask for Ajovy.

I used to have 20 migraine days a month and had stopped working, going out, living life.

A shot of Ajovy every month and I'm now living life to the full again. No need for any painkillers, just Ajovy.

StColumbofNavron · 13/01/2023 08:06

I was prescribed beta blockers, because I had got to the point where I needed to prevent them rather than treat. These reduced my migraines significantly. I have chronic migraine and the big ones went from twice a week (with the associated next day) to about once every 3 months.

I also buy an OTC that comes with just two tablets and you have to sign a form to buy it, the name escapes me. But that is the only med that has ever actually stopped a migraine for me. It doesn’t usually work if I wake with a migraine but will if it comes on in the day.

The problem with migraines is there is no one size treatment. The triggers are different and what works or gives some relief differs.

re: cannabis. I would say migraine pain differs a little from other sorts pain and I’m not sure. Reading the other responses saying it makes it worse I would be very Careful here.

lavenderfine · 13/01/2023 08:08

I was the same as @RedCarsGoFaster suffered with migraines as a teenager and tried cannabis recreationally a few times and it gave me a migraine worse than any other every single time. I did only smoke it though, never tried it as an edible or anything!

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/01/2023 08:08

I can't advise on cannabis for migraine, but I do suffer from migraines. Get on the phone now and get one of today's emergency appointments at the doctor's.

LetsDoThis2023 · 13/01/2023 08:11

Have you tried botox?

RedCarsGoFaster · 13/01/2023 08:19

Botox and Ajovy are only prescribed by neurologists, and currently only for chronic migraine (although guidance can allow CGRP injections for episodic). We have no idea if OP has chronic migraine or one a year...

See your GP, OP

harbaughskhakis · 13/01/2023 08:58

0/10 I would not recommend when in the middle of a migraine, afterwards to help relax, is good but in the middle of an attack its awful, at least for me.
