Anybody tried cannabis for migraines?

And if so, did it help?

I'm on day 7 of a migraine and getting desperate. If anybody has had success with cannabis, would you mind sharing how much you needed and in what form?

@Marsde I'm interested in Ajovy but nervous about the side effects I've read about. Have you had any bad effects?

Thanks for all the replies and well wishes everyone. I wrote a longer reply but my computer's just deleted it annoyingly. I do have chronic migraines and have tried many things over the years, including Botox. I'll give up on the cannabis idea based on the feedback here!

@belimoo I can honestly say it's the one med I've been on where I've had zero side effects.

My neurologist said there's very few side effects noticed but constipation is the main one.

belimoo · 13/01/2023 11:04

@Marsde wow, that must feel like a miracle given how much they were affecting you. I'll definitely revisit it in that case!

It made mine SO much worse! It might depend on what causes yours though. I’m on a run of 13 days of night time migraine but luckily my new triptans still work for now. Good luck OP, it’s shit.

belimoo · 13/01/2023 11:50

Sorry to hear that @LozzaChops101 Solidarity! Can I ask which triptan you're trying? Have you taken then every day for 13 days?

I used medical cannabis for chronic back pain for three months. I get migraines now too, I don't think it would have worked for me I felt quite queasy on it and heady. Sorry! Amitriptaline daily seems to be helping me and sumitripan when I feel the start of one

fuckthisforagameofdarts · 13/01/2023 11:53

Mine are usually caused by dehydration but I only found that out quite recently. Just by chance someone said drink a pint of water as soon as you get any signs. It has worked more times than it hasn't.
Good luck

I'm glad I'm not the only one who expected to be floating round the ceiling pain free while thinking I'm riding a unicorn.
Rather than thinking my head was going to explode everywhere.

I hope you find something that works for you OP, and the other sufferers.

I know it's not much use to many of you at the moment, but I found once I because post menopausal, they just disappeared. Just like that, as Tommy Cooper would say.

I’ve used edibles to knock a migraine on the head (badoom-tish). I had to take more than I usually would to shift it then spent the rest of the day feeling decidedly stoned.

fun at 15, less so at 55. Although maybe if I’d gone to the late-night spar and eaten 12 wagon wheels I’d have felt better. 😉

I've heard that too. It can't hurt to try it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

@DogBowlsAreMyWeapon your last paragraph has me 😂

Ajovy is not usually prescribed as a first-line preventative treatment. It's generally a last resort after trying Propanalol and Amytriptiline for example.

By day 3 of a several-day migraine the only thing that works for me is an intramuscular injection of ketoprofen.

Can you get to an urgent care? I would think they could give you it there (although I'm not in the UK so not entirely sure how your system works).

Marsde · 13/01/2023 12:34

@belimoo Yes, it (and my neurologist!) saved my life, frankly. I had no existence stuck in the house for 15 years and we tried everything you could mention, every med and every old wives tale!

As a bad case I was put on the Ajovy trials when it was first released and my life started again. I now walk several miles a day with my dog, have a job I love and spend time with my DH and friends.

I hope you find something that helps, there's nothing as wonderful in life as having health ❤️

I’m on zolmitriptan (mine are menstrual migraines) and prochlorperozine to keep it down if needed.

I have ended up taking them every day on this run. I was told to take them every day for 3 days before period, during period, and for three days after, but my migraines have wandered off the usual schedule so I’ve only been taking them as a migraine pops up. I was really surprised my Dr prescribed that kind of regime as you hear so much about overuse of triptans!

Have you been on your triptan for long? Everyone I know says they stop being effective after a while and they’ve had to find a new one.

Serano · 13/01/2023 13:02

Another vote for finding a different triptan. They are structurally close to psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and DMT (another psychedelic) that anecdotally do clear migraines, but without any psychedelic effects.

I don't think there is any evidence for cannabis clearing migraines, I could be wrong. Triptans seem more failsafe.

Scarecrowrowboat · 13/01/2023 13:11

When I was younger yes. Just very small amounts really helped with the pain and the nausea. For context I have tried every available prophylactic and abortive medication currently available for migraine.
There are private clinics (mostly seem Harley St based) that will prescribe medical cannabis for migraine but the one I saw was £300 a month prescription plus consultations.

CheesyCrumpet · 13/01/2023 13:11

@LozzaChops101 Snap. Mine were menstrual / hormone related. Every month without fail for a couple of days leading up to it, then the first day or two of menstruating.
This is probably why mine disappeared post menopause.
Does anyone find that it starts on the temple at the same side of the head each time?
For some strange reason, if a headache started on my right temple, it would develop into a migraine, but if a headache started on my left temple I could kill it straight away with just a couple of paracetamol.
