What's on your high street?

Inspired by another thread but not a thread about one.

I found it interesting reading people saying things like 'I'm amazed you have an X shop' or 'All we've got is vape shops and barbers' and things like that. And also how some people have a shop that's always dead but other posters say ones near them are always busy!

I live in a village. The nearest town isn't far however.

The village square/main street has a post office, THREE barbers, a charity shop (a good one, too!) two 'phone repair shops, a flower shop, a piercing shop and a co-op. It has a general store too, a hairdressers and a couple of independent gift shops-those I don't know how are still going.

There used to be an electronics repair shop and a sweet shop. I wish those were still there, the sweet shop was a traditional one and I miss it :( and the electric repair one was handy.

The nearby town has three junk shops. One is absolutely HUGE, and sells just about everything. You can get your grandmother a new pair of slippers in there, and buy a crack pipe while you're at it (I'm not joking). A shop that sells knock-off cigarettes as well as loads of brands of sweet goods that I've never heard of. The frozen food shop has just closed down. It has a savers, 5 charity shops and three betting shops.
It used to have loads more clothes shops. And an actual shopping Centre that's now empty :( I remember it thriving when I was young.

4 Nail shops, 8 Charity shops, 4 gambling shops, the worst wilkos in the world and 3 mobility shops.

ThatsTheSpiritGrandma · 12/01/2023 18:05

Those "junk stores" sound interesting....are you in the UK OP?

I live in a suburb about a mile away from the centre of a small city, it's a very villagey type feel though.
On our high street we have...
A printmakers
A florist
A hairdresser
A cafe
A greengrocers / farm shop
A decent charity shop
A Chinese takeaway
A co-op
A gift shop
A butchers
An Indian takeaway
A pet shop
A flower school
A pottery painting place
A hardware store
A convenience store with post office counter
A posh burger joint
A bookshop
A French restaurant/ takeaway
A deli
A pharmacy

We also have a brilliant village hall, a theatre, a few pubs, a garage, car bodywork shop snd MOT centre, plus a blacksmiths.
There are other shops and businesses within a ten minute walk and the city centre is about half an hours walk along a scenic stretch of canal.

I love living here but can only do so because we rent from family, when we buy our own place we'll have to move away because the area is too expensive.
Pretty sure anyone in the local area can easily guess where I live 😂

Catoneverychair · 12/01/2023 18:06

Apparently I live in the City of Coffee Shops.

Glassesglasses · 12/01/2023 18:07

Small town without one specific high street but in the main area theres, 2 clothes shops, 1 eco shop, 3 card shops, vape, savers, 4 pharmacies, whsmiths, sewing craft shop, painting craft shop, 6 antique shops, old fashioned sweet shop, boots, book shop, hippy incense shop. And then all the hairdressers/barbers and nail shops.
Mainly all independent shops. Really nice town.

LBOCS2 · 12/01/2023 18:07

Off the top of my head... an opticians, a Cook, three estate agents, three hairdressers, a beauty salon, an Indian restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant, a solicitors, a newsagent/post office, a Polish shop, a Costa, three independent coffee shops (one of which does eco-refills, the other sells fancy cake), a barbers, a dry cleaners, a shell garage and a Waitrose.

It's not bad to be honest.

mrsbyers · 12/01/2023 18:08

We don’t really have a high street

village has a pub , a shop and a small co-op , a takeaway and a hairdressers that doesn’t take new clients

oh and a dog groomer

Glassesglasses · 12/01/2023 18:09

Oh I forgot about the takeaways, flower shops, butchers , bakers, candle stick makers , pet shop.. too many to name really.

Throwncrumbs · 12/01/2023 18:09

Mainly homeless people, buskers and drunk people, all begging for money!

YorkieTheRabbit · 12/01/2023 18:15

Large village/small town, we have a co-op, butcher, bakery, bike repair shop, gift & cards, barbers, physio, hardware shop, sewing/ alterations place, five hairdressers, two beauticians, two cafes, ladies clothes shop, florist, dentist, milliner, undertaker , post office which is in the library, two charity shops, one is the village shop which raises money for local things, the other is hospice shop. Two restaurants, three pubs, a wine bar and a tap house bar. Two sandwich shops, two takeaways. There are no empty shops and it all seems to be doing well.
The nearest proper town is really awful, most decent shops have closed down, it’s mainly pound shops, vape places, phone shops both big brand and little independent ones that seem to just sell second hand phones and games, takeaways/fast food, coffee shops, betting shops and cheap clothes shops. The last time I went was in July as I needed to go to the bank. I was there 20mins and I was very glad to leave.

I live in a small town. Barely anything on the small high street. Think there’s 2-3 butchers (no use to me as a veggie), few hairdressing/nail salons, greggs, couple of charity shops, very small M&S which is just food, small boots, few bars/pubs, small wilko, home bargains and b&m and Argos, few different opticians. There’s a tiny Holland & Barrett as well but no idea how it stays open because I never see anyone in there.

Patienceisntvirtuous · 12/01/2023 20:18

I forgot to mention we also have a cafe!

Yes, I am in the Uk @ThatsTheSpiritGrandma . Junk shops galore in the nearby town. I rarely go there-occasionally for the charity shops-and also to be honest, the junk shop (the large one) is good for things like screws, branded beauty products, DIY items etc.

I can't guess where you live, I did worry about that when I began the thread but then thought, I am sure my high street is far from UK.
@glassesglasses aw imagine if there was a candlestick maker Grin
These answers are actually really interesting. Or maybe I'm just nosy/sad.

Kazzyhoward · 12/01/2023 20:32

In our village (8000 inhabitants so more of a small town than a village), we only have a co-op, a pub, sandwich shop and a hairdressers.

In the last 10 years, the others have closed down including 2 other pubs, a restaurant, the newsagents, post office, butchers, chemist, Spar shop, and a hardware store.

The centre now looks a very sad sight with a few empty shops, a couple of shops turned into offices, and the others turned into housing.
