@Niftythrifter that's the type of thing that gets given as a gift, donated to a charity shop cos they didn't want it, bought by someone who likes to get all their gifts from charity shops rather than a gift the person actually wants, gives to someone who doesn't really want it, then gets donated again to the charity shop.....and repeat for a decade 🤣

A pair of Italian leather boots for a tenner , a vintage pure silk scarf (50p in the half price sale!) (massive like a parachute!), a couple of paperbacks and a merino jumper. Oh and a big stack of kids m&s festive nightwear, fleece onesies, pjs etc, all in the right size. Chuffed to bits !

Niftythrifter · 04/01/2023 20:52

@Needmorelego 😂😂

Going to Oban for the weekend so hoping for a bargain! Last trip recently I got some fab Xmas cards. The woman on the till was born in the same small place in England where my dgf was from! Quite bizarre!

Ilovelurchers · 04/01/2023 21:01

It was yesterday we went, but.....

I got:
Coat for DD from Next - 50p
Wellies for DD - £3
(Both small adult sizes)
4 horror DVDs for £1
Mug which says "Am I Normal? No!' which will do as a gift for somebody - 49p!

My husband got 3 Ian Rankin books for £1 and a brass letter box thing you would put on a door (not sure why he wants that as we currently rent, but he is a great picker up of unconsidered trifles!)

We also dropped off a bag of books and clothes.
Love charity shops!

Nothing, because the charity shops near me are TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE!

I've been priced out of quite a few charity shops near where I live, too.

CathyorClaire · 04/01/2023 21:17

Week before Christmas a £150 jacket that looked unworn for dh for £4. Also bought dvd's and books in the same shop which brought the total to a reckless tenner.

Last week a complete dvd set of a comedy series I've had my eye on for a while plus three or four other films on dvd for £3.

Can't beat a romp through a chazzer's aisle.

Duckswaddle · 04/01/2023 21:21

Baukjen black jersey skirt £3

Duckswaddle · 04/01/2023 21:23

Yesterday:
Berghaus walking trousers £2.50
Seasalt linen coat £8
Couple books for £1

Duckswaddle · 04/01/2023 21:25

Last weekend I got a great pair of unworn gold JD Williams boots for £7 and a new 90s style Stradivarius dress for £3.
Got my daughter some cute fat face things for a couple of pounds.
Bloody love charity shops. Can never resist a good rummage.

Where do you all live? The ones around us are stupidly expensive.

Niftythrifter · 05/01/2023 18:44

Lulu Guineas small cylindrical small makeup bag £1.50.

A 500 piece jigsaw for £1.50

HazelBite · 05/01/2023 19:15

In my local town they are very expensive and offer very little worth having. A short bus ride away however there are some that get catalogue returns, well worth a visit!

Happy to find an Italian made, 100% Merino wool jumper from John Lewis, looks almost new but slightly shrunk, which fits me perfectly and in exactly the colour I wanted, for £4.99. Feels worth the trawl for gems like this. I've noticed a massive difference between charity shops recently and have been disappointed to see the huge raise in prices for poor quality stock in some. Saying that, I did catch the thrill of a £1 sale rail post-Christmas with versatile Gap Tunic in my size.

Niftythrifter · 06/01/2023 12:46

@moretea I recently got a Gap merino wool cardigan from the sale rail for less than £3.

@Niftythrifter brilliant, sounds like you've got a good eye for quality bargains. I've found it increasing difficult to get natural fibres in new clothes, so am much happier to source most of my clothes second hand. Your lulu Guinness bag sounds fab too

Niftythrifter · 06/01/2023 15:15

@moretea Thank you! It’s only a little cosmetics bag but it will be good for chucking lipsticks in etc!

Another jigsaw today for £2.50

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/01/2023 15:58

Nothing, though I dropped off a bag of clothes and an unwanted desk and chair we have (our nearest charity shop is one of those large ones that sells furniture).

I don't tend to buy anything in Charity shops other than books these days, or the odd bit of decorative homeware (eg bought a pair of brass candlesticks just before christmas as I'd been looking for some anyway).

It's only a bargain if you really need it or will use it, and not just because it's designer and/or cheap. I noticed a few years ago when I was doing clearouts that most of the things I hadn't worn much, wasn't reaching for or wasn't sure about when I tried them on were charity shop 'bargains'. I do a capsule wardrobe now so don't need anything anyway but have stopped looking at clothing when I go in.

People seem quite obsessed with brands

Babyroobs · 07/01/2023 17:19

I bought a brand new in the cellophane wrapping bottle of expensive looking perfume for £2. Got it home and googled it and it retails for £40-£50 a bottle. the only problem is I don't like the smell. DD says I smell like a granny. thinking maybe I can sell on ebay ! Also got a set of saucepans for £15 brand new as dd volunteers in that charity shop and said she could buy them cheaper.
