I wish the dark afternoons would do one!

It is 4:00PM and it’s already starting to get dark. I am the kind of person who prefers the dark winter evenings over the brighter summer evenings (I still do like spring and summer) but it is so depressing when it gets dark this early.

I would be much happier if it got dark between 7.30-8.30, although there is sod all I can do about it as it’s Mother Nature! 😂

I have good news - they are doing one, huzzah! After the solstice (21st Dec) the days get longer by about 2 minutes a day, or quarter of an hour a week. So by 18th Jan we will already have an hour more daylight!!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 03/01/2023 16:47

As pp says - we turned the corner on 21st December. It's getting a little bit lighter every day now Smile

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2023 16:47

I'm sitting by the fire looking at our Christmas Tree. It's lovely on a dark Winter's afternoon.

Worldpeaceandallthat · 03/01/2023 16:51

I'm not half as productive when it's winter. I seem to get my mojo back come March. It's as though a weight has lifted off me.

SAD (seasonal affective disorder is it called?) comes to mind. Is it an actual "thing" do those lamps really help? 🤔

I may look into it.

Abracadabra12345 · 03/01/2023 16:52

I’d love the nights to stay this loooooong forever!

lking679 · 03/01/2023 16:52

I hate it when I have to have the lights on in the house in the day, never mind at 4pm and I’ve got bloody big windows! Roll on spring!

Echobelly · 03/01/2023 16:53

Hold on another month then it'll be lighter. I'm counting the weeks...

Xmasgrinchywinchy · 03/01/2023 17:01

I hate it. From about mid feb you notice the difference and by early march it's just about bearable

MunchMunch · 03/01/2023 18:10

Ds2 was back to school this morning g and I couldn't believe how dark it was at 8:20! For the last two weeks I've never seen that time of the morning thanks to all the dc being teens/adult so I've been able to have very long lie in's!

I much prefer summer - light mornings and light nights. I find I struggle in the winter as I'm getting older to get up on a morning when it's dark and feel tired all day when it's cold and dark and miserable.

Blossomtoes · 03/01/2023 18:12

I detest the short days. I’m in my element in June.

Fluffygreenslippers · 03/01/2023 18:15

I love it, makes me feel better about sitting in my dressing gown all day.

DrCoconut · 03/01/2023 18:18

I feel so much better when it's light and warm. This weather and darkness just saps my strength. I can't wait for the later spring and summer, I've been wishing for it since the clocks went back. Here's to sitting outside my tent withthe DC toasting marshmallows at 9pm!

JaneJeffer · 03/01/2023 18:23

Move to the west of Ireland you'll get a full extra hour Xmas Wink

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/01/2023 18:24

I hate them too, but they are getting longer now. Might not feel like it, but every day is a bit longer. Spring is on the way.

Comedycook · 03/01/2023 18:30

You can check the sunrise and sunset times online... every day we get an extra couple of minutes of daylight as we've had the winter solstice

ShakeYourFeathers · 03/01/2023 20:46

It's not the evenings I hate getting dark but the pitch black mornings

Delatron · 03/01/2023 20:51

I hate both. I feel so groggy in the morning. Even at 7.45 when I need to get up - and I appreciate that’s a lie in for some. I’m absolutely fine getting up earlier in the summer.

I hate it getting dark in the evening as I would prefer to be out running, walking the dog, sat in the garden. Just enjoying more of the day.

I think it’s the cosy/pjs/snuggle on the sofa people that like all this dark. I really don’t understand it myself. Saps all my energy.

Delatron · 03/01/2023 20:52

Though I’m now taking the dog for a walk at around 4pm and noticing the very subtle change in dusk, even by a few minutes and this is helping a tiny bit

Weirdos

ThePoshUns · 03/01/2023 20:55

The dark and the rain, just so miserable. I find Winter completely depressing. Roll on Spring.

AnyFucker · 03/01/2023 20:59

It was pitch black going to work this morning ! (7:30)

I am sure before the New Year break it was starting to get a bit lighter at that time 😐

AtomicBlondeRose · 03/01/2023 21:02

At this time of year I always start scrutinising the sunrise/sunset charts. Between the start of January and the end it gets dark 46 minutes later which makes a massive difference to me. The first day of the year when I pick DD up from wraparound care in the daylight is a major milestone for my mood and general outlook on life.

ghjklo · 03/01/2023 21:04

get one of those daylight lamps for SAD, 10000 lux you need. Have it on your desk for a few hours a day, makes a big difference. I think they are about £30 on Amazon.

How? Genuine question.

ghjklo · 03/01/2023 21:04

The SAD lamps are also good for helping you in the mornings too!
