It’s that time of year again... the late Christmas present to our livers!
You may be thinking of doing Dry January to:

*detox a little after seasonal overindulgence, or
*help you cut down a bit generally, or
*help you start to get out of a harmful alcohol habit, or
*just be a bit healthier for a month...

It’s good for all of those things!

I find the MN DJ threads excellent for support, encouragement, sharing info, ‘we’re in this together’ camaraderie, suggestions for grown up drinks, aversion techniques and just fun.

This is my sixth year of DJ and I swear it may have saved my life; it was so hard first time, but having succeeded I did dry June and October after that, and do so most years. It has broken my habit, banished much of the craving and reset my relationship with booze. I imagine it's added years to my life.

I won’t be finding DJ too difficult this year, but some will. Hopefully this thread will help.

Throw your hat in the ring, pull up a chair and let's do this together. Everyone welcome 🙂☕️🧃

The DJ2022 Wagon creaks to a start in just 4 days, but always stops for latecomers 🙂

Sign me up! I've done the last 3 years but my drinking has crept back up to unhealthy levels. I'm hoping to do January-March this time (and maybe beyond).

HPLikecraft · 28/12/2022 20:34

Welcome aboard @ShinySylveon 🙂

I'm also aiming for January-March, though I will have a day off for my birthday at the end of February!

I'm in, as always. But I will be finishing early, because it's my 50th.

ShinySylveon · 28/12/2022 21:20

Definitely forgive for the birthdays 😁

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/12/2022 21:21

I'm in.
I'm also going to low carb and eat less sugar.
What fun I'll be 🤭

SeasonsBleatings · 28/12/2022 21:21

Yay! I'm in for the third year. So looking forward to it!

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2022 21:24

I'm in. I can't say I am looking forward to it, but I'm in.

Inextremis · 28/12/2022 21:27

Hello! I did NOvember in preparation for the onslaught of Christmas, and I shall happily join you all after the 8th Jan - DH's birthday, we're always a bit behind starting on our New Year things 'cos it wouldn't be fair to curtail his celebrations. Planning on a dry January and February, then a slightly moist March (St Patrick's Day), an arid April and May, then a bit of a Juicy June (my birthday) - and we'll see where we go from there!

Rovinonmars · 28/12/2022 21:28

I'm in but won't be starting until the 2nd

MmedeGouge · 28/12/2022 21:30

I’m in too. I’ve a significant birthday early January but after that I’m determined.
Last year made it to March.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2022 21:53

I’m in. Dh and I both want to cut down/give up and it’s much easier when we do it together.

HibiscusIsland1 · 28/12/2022 21:54

Yep. I'm in.....used to do Dry January annually for about 5 years then the COVID years hit and that went out thr window. Looking forward to it!

GratitudeGoddess · 28/12/2022 21:57

I'm in too. Thanks for starting the thread

flowerycurtain · 28/12/2022 22:03

I think I'd like to join this. Noticed a bit of a reliance on the old wine after a stressful day that has the beginning of a niggle in my brain that's it's not a good thing. Previous addictions to nicotine and overeating. Coffee and wine seem acceptable and I'm worried in my head I think the latter is ok.

Need a bit of thinking and preparation to begin with though!

NewToWoo · 28/12/2022 22:06

I'm definitely in. Done it for the past three years and really enjoy the reset. Thanks for starting the thread.

smalbert · 28/12/2022 22:10

I'm in, tried for past 3 years but always failed after about 10 days 😔.
Be great to have the extra support

scaryg · 28/12/2022 22:11

I'm in, I've already told DP I won't be buying any more alcohol in our weekly shop. If he wants anything he'll have to go out and get it himself. What we do have leftover on Monday will be boxed up and put in the garage, my will power isn't very good if there's a nice bottle of something chilled in the fridge.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/12/2022 22:14

I’m in as part of a whole life revamp/health kick
waves to @Oblomov22 from BSD threads of many moons ago 👋

SeasonsBleatings · 28/12/2022 22:37

I won't be drinking on NYE either. I feel so positive on 1 Jan when I don't wake up with a hangover - I feel the benefits already which makes the following days easier.

Greatly · 28/12/2022 22:40

Yup - I'm doing this. I've spent a few months chatting with liver surgeons as my dsibling has jist had an alcohol induced liver transplant and they recommend it.

Champagneforeveryone · 28/12/2022 22:41

I'm in with DH, though won't be starting until the 3rd as we are going away for a couple of nights.

Our relationship with alcohol is somewhat problematic, more so for DH than me. However I'm peri menopausal and the weight is piling on relentlessly, I hope that DJ will give me a head start on weight loss.

Oblomov22 · 28/12/2022 22:43

@thenewaveragebear1983
Waves, love ❤️ to you too Bear, I have never forgotten you. A new 'ride' for us, this month!

Oblomov22 · 28/12/2022 22:51

I drink like a fucking fish. I prefer a low alcohol white wine. I like a red. Love all cocktails. Pornstar martini? Like a G&T.

Since Uni, I get no hangovers, no side effects. Drinking is easy for me. Drinking less is hard.

But I think Dh is concerned about my alcohol intake. I'm not, but I don't like that he is.

I do love a Good dry Jan. normally do it easily. I can easily not drink. At all. Or go for a tonic instead of a g&t, if out somewhere. But what gets my fucking goat, and I say this in every dry Jan thread I've ever been on, is that I can't believe they still haven't made a decent alcohol free dry white wine. Seriously, why on earth not?

My 50th birthday is 26th. Party 28th. I hope to make it to then. Haven't failed before.
