Alcohol question. Yes or no answer, so simple

I rarely drink but thought I would have a hot toddy last night as I am still snotty and coldy.

So I put a decent slug of DHs whisky in some milk with sugar and heated it in the microwave. DH said it was a fair bit gone from his bottle of single malt!

I am super sensitive to alcohol and can get drunk on 2 big glasses of wine (drunk as in vomiting like crazy and falling over)

But this hot milky whisky did nothing and DH says it's because the alcohol was all evaporated in the heating. Is this right?

I know this isn't aibu but you are for putting a single malt in a hot toddy 🤣

Montague22 · 24/12/2022 21:35

I’m not sure if it would be hot enough for long enough. Mulled wine is alcoholic still. So maybe a bit of it?

Dedontdodatderdode · 24/12/2022 21:35

No. I googled recently about cooking burning off alcohol. It has to be heated really hot for a fair bit of time for even a small % of the alcohol to be diminished. I will see if I can find the link

AffIt · 24/12/2022 21:35

What a waste of good whisky.

Clariana · 24/12/2022 21:35

Well alcohol evaporates at about 80 degrees, so it depends how much you heated the mix?

grosslyunfair · 24/12/2022 21:35

Yabu for putting milk in! Toddy has whisky honey cinnamon lemon but definitely not milk. What a waste of good whisky!

Happierwithouthim · 24/12/2022 21:36

Why the milk is my major question? Maybe you're so groggy from being ill you can't feel the alcohol

Pettv · 24/12/2022 21:37

You are very unreasonable for using a single malt and for putting it in milk!!!
Hot toddy is not made with milk!!

Hillrunning · 24/12/2022 21:39

What abomination is this? Hot toddy is whisky honey and lemon.

Dedontdodatderdode · 24/12/2022 21:39

I can’t find the actual paper I read now but the info was pretty much this

Evaporating alcohol from a dish takes hours, rather than minutes. As the US Department of Agriculture’s researchers discovered, a dish heated to boiling point and cooked for 15 minutes still retains about 40 percent of its original alcohol content

TitaniasAss · 24/12/2022 21:46

Milk? Ye gads woman! You need any old shite whisky (save the lovely malt), a teeny bit of hot water, just enough to war through, honey and lemon. That'll sort you out.

powershowerforanhour · 24/12/2022 21:50

"What abomination is this? Hot toddy is whisky honey and lemon."

My thoughts exactly...then, after a bit of consideration, I realised that OP basically made herself a hot Bailey's. I don't even like Bailey's but you know, experiments ought to be repeatable by other people....

...so I've just sacrificed a good slosh of Bushmills Carribean rum cask finish single malt in the spirit of scientific endeavour. I added full fat milk and and spoonful of brown sugar and gave it a razz in the microwave (not long enough to foam the milk up) and do you know...it actually might be my go-to pick me up now. A milk toddy.

Yes, it's got a weird long name but it's a single malt. No idea what it actually means 😂

Milk toddy then! Got another tonight (drink now) and put jack Daniels in this time. DH has hidden the single malt.

purpledalmation · 24/12/2022 22:07

Think I'll stick to nital then. Whisky is rubbish and tastes revolting anyway 😂

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 24/12/2022 22:07

That was not a hot toddy HTH

Beercrispsandnuts · 24/12/2022 22:09

What you made is a whisky milk punch. The one with sugar is supposed to be drunk cold, the one that is heated (supposed to be on the stove) has honey and cinnamon instead of sugar.

but if you like it you like it , go for it.

Anewhoo · 24/12/2022 22:10

No, it doesn’t ‘burn off’, especially if you’ve just microwaved it. If you deglaze a pan with it until there is barely any liquid left then there wouldn’t be much booze in it, but no way with how you’ve done it. Think you have just ruined everyone’s Christmas by putting single malt and milk in a mug and microwaving it though 😂 🤢

Well of course it does if you make it like that!! It’s like sticking a glug of whiskey in an overly sweetened tea 🤮

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 24/12/2022 22:14

Not much alcohol would have evaporated in your method.

Sixsmith · 24/12/2022 22:15

This is the saddest thing I've ever read.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 24/12/2022 22:19

My DH is a chemistry professor and he says your DH is wrong and the PP are right. The alcohol was still there.

DogInATent · 24/12/2022 22:22

DH has hidden the single malt.
Not surprised.

Pretty sure if he'd started a thread about this the advice would be LTB.
Single malt in milk... and the wee donkey too.

Fleurdaisy · 24/12/2022 22:30

But has it helped your cold? Whisky in hot milk sounds vile to me ( teetotal) but if it’s helped your cold…..
