Brits binge drinking abroad

I've not long gotten back from a lovely 5 star resort in Hurghada, Egypt, me and my bf splashed out a bit because of negative experiences in lower rated places in Turkey but we saw exactly the same..

Most of the guests were Russians but a close second were Brits who just lounged around getting off their face on the alcohol on offer.

We made friends with some lovely people from various European countries but felt constant shame from the behavior of our compatriots.

From what I gather Russians are the same, but there's a lack of beer guts on show and the women try to glam themselves up..

Why do British people just want to be intoxicated 24/7 when abroad?

Some do. Some don't. Like most nationalities, I guess.

buckeejit · 21/12/2022 23:40

I like being drunk & can't do it when I'm working. Definitely would prefer it
In a 5 star resort where I'm escaping my normal life. I'm not loud & annoying so don't see the issue with the likes of me.

I was in Magaluf/Palma Nova in September, the first time since 1989 😆 The only really obnoxious drunken behaviour I witnessed was from local youngsters on the first bus on Sunday morning, on the way back from their Saturday night out. It's a myth that it's only Brits.

KangarooKenny · 22/12/2022 06:53

I think that’s a massive generalisation.

Harperweek · 22/12/2022 06:57

Give over. People are on holiday. They can do what they like.

I haven't saw one of these threads in a while.

Poor attempt at goading, OP. You lost me at the fat, non glam Brits 😉

Give over. People are on holiday. They can do what they like.

Can they, though? What about decency and accountability? What if I fancied daubing dog shite on car windows? Would that be ok?

Lunamom · 22/12/2022 07:17

But it is true. Im not from England, But it is mostly russians and english people drinking and being loud. Also just came back from Hurgada last month.

TimetohittheroadJack · 22/12/2022 07:24

Thats Awful! Imagine being fat and having the audacity to go on holiday (especially an expensive one) and relax by the pool having a cocktail.

Yes, the Germans and the Dutch daintily sit sipping a freshly squeezed orange juice, not a beer belly insight ...

Kanaloa · 22/12/2022 07:36

Maybe there’s not much else to do in a resort.

Why don’t you go on a holiday that’s less geared towards drinking? Our favourite has been Rome, so much sightseeing - we walked soooo much, thousands on thousands of steps each day. Also there’s sporty type holiday, hiking and camping, city breaks - even somewhere like New York if you have the money.

But either way it doesn’t matter whether others drink/glam themselves up/do the Macarena from morning till night. Unless they’re trying to force you to do the same it has no impact on you.

Kanaloa · 22/12/2022 07:37

Also don’t know why you’d feel ’shame’ because someone you don’t know is doing something. Are you the type to judge like that? For example, if you saw a Nigerian person doing something unpleasant, would you judge all Nigerian people on that?

CoxixSix · 22/12/2022 07:48

Because it's cheap.

Lunamom · 22/12/2022 08:02

Cheap?

Nosecamera · 22/12/2022 08:15

We're currently somewhere warm and all inclusive, only 3* though. The Brits are fine, but there are some mildly obnoxious middle age mid European men and shock horror, the women haven't kept them selves well and the men have absolutely massive bellies.

As someone who's travelled a lot Brits are the worst and rightly have a terrible reputation for it. I'm always embarrassed by it.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/12/2022 09:30

Some Brits do, some don't. I've never been on an AI holiday and probably never will. Sounds like you did a lot of lounging around yourself, otherwise you would have also seen the people who were snorkelling, diving or doing other watersports or activities, going sightseeing or in the gym/spa.

People from the Nordic countries also have a pretty poor reputation in relation to alcohol consumption on holiday. Seems that some of them lose all sense when faced with unlimited alcohol without the high prices and state control they're under at home.

Or maybe if you live somewhere with a high cost of living that's cold, dark and wet a lot of the time, you like to let your hair down a little when on holiday somewhere warm and sunny and can get a cocktail or two without having to take out a second mortgage.

gogohmm · 22/12/2022 09:41

I went to a four star in the canaries, trust me the Germans, Dutch, French, Belgiun's etc were giving the Brits a run for their money in the alcohol consumption stakes - but everyone was really friendly and I didn't see any obnoxious drunken behaviour. We sat with Germans we met 3 nights running in the evening entertainment/drinking area and they drunk me under the table, 2 for every drink I managed! Remember an ai (especially all ai) attracts those who plan to drink, my parents avoid them because they don't drink!

SallyWD · 22/12/2022 09:57

I've no doubt people from other countries can drink is Brits under the table. When I've been abroad though I've over ever seen Brits vomittting in the streets, getting in to fights, falling over, doing moonies to passers by. Still, it's all good fun apparently.

No, not like most nationalities. In a lot of European cultures, alcohol is mostly drunk in small quantities and with a meal so it's savoured. Of course there are exceptions, but on average Brits have a tendency to binge drink way more than most other nationalities do.

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 22/12/2022 10:06

Depends on what kind of holiday your on! All inclusive resorts... yep I've saw a few people lying around the pool... having a few alcoholic beverages... relaxing... getting drunk! That's the kind of holiday they like! When I went to the Dominican the Americans were Wild! (Because there were more Americans) if you were on a resort that had a lot of people who were from the same country you would say the same.

When I've travelled to Austria, Belgium, Germany, Holland on self catering, Center parc style holidays and travelling independently... no drunk or loud behaviour as that is a different kind of holiday.
A lot of people just want to relax with a few beverages on holiday as they can't do that at home.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/12/2022 10:09

Currently at a French ski resort. The English and French speakers are just as bad as each other for obnoxious behaviour after s few drinks. The difference is family's vs adult groups.
