Uber - can someone please explain this to me?

We booked a ride, watched the car getting nearer and then, literally a hundred yards from us, it stopped coming.
He rang, but I didn't realise I was him and rejected the call, but then his number was blocked and I couldn't call back.
Then, another uber said he'd be with us in 7 minutes, without being called.
I'm new to uber (obviously) but is this normal?

Yes, they can cancel bookings and if they do they will auto find you a new driver

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 07:56

Thanks for that. It just seems a bit off - because of that my ride came 10 minutes later than asked for. I'd like to be able to negatively review the 1st driver but that doesn't seem to be possible.

Wonder why he got as far as ringing you before deciding not to continue the ride?

Maybe he'd just had a personal call asking for him to come home early, was going to explain to you & when you rejected the call he let the system do it anonymously?

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 08:02

I'll never know. Frustratingly.

The first driver was probably calling to let you know he was there / couldn’t find you & when you rejected the call, he terminated the ride.

Needmorelego · 13/12/2022 08:08

He probably couldn't find you.
They are relying on sat navs. Uber always comes to the front of my flats, Bolt (rival company) the sat nav always directs them to the back of the flats so they are usually looking for me at the back when I am waiting at the front !!

I agree. This was my first thought. He is likely to think you didn’t show, despite his calling you.

AnotherAppleThief · 13/12/2022 08:12

I mean you rejected his call, how was he supposed to contact you to find you/say he was there? And you want to give him a negative review?

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 08:16

The pin for where we are was clearly in the right place, and we're not difficult to find - especially as he was very close, just round the corner. I rejected the call because I didn't know who it was coming from, and thought it was a random call.
I would have called back if I could.

CaramelizedNuts · 13/12/2022 08:20

It was annoying but he tried to contact you. You got another driver. You still got your journey.

You can't negatively review him. This is his livelyhood and probably not a good one.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 13/12/2022 08:25

Uber pins are not an exact science - it’s why they sometimes call you. It can be for a variety of reasons:

stuck in traffic, can you walk to me?
don’t know the area, can’t see the turning, can you walk to me?
can’t be bothered to drive round the corner, can you walk to me?
nearly with you - checking you’re ready
etc etc.

Oblomov22 · 13/12/2022 08:28

You rejected the call.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/12/2022 08:31

They don't generally call. It's usually if there's an issue, otherwise you get the "I've arrived" notification. He's called you for whatever reason and you've rejected it. You can't call back as it's not his real number. It's a bit off to give him a poor rating.

When you were waiting for a cab?

I don't think you've got grounds to complain about it him, this is on you.

As is being late, uou should have allowed more time for unexpected incidents if it was that important.

knittingaddict · 13/12/2022 09:02

Why on earth would you reject a call when you're waiting for a service to arrive? We rarely get taxis, but it's not uncommon to get a call to say they've arrived. The same can happen with takeaway and supermarket deliveries. I'm not surprised that the first driver left. They probably get messed around all the time.

coldec · 13/12/2022 09:04

OP didn't answer the phone, that's why. Had OP answered the phone, this would have ended differently.

Lottie2shoes · 13/12/2022 09:13

Please don't comment negatively! Especially since its of your own doing. He came, he rang. Unfortunately you rejected his call. Yes you could not have rang back but he had no fault. They gave you a replacement.
I would only ever comment negatively if you had not received a call at all.
(Speaking as someone who has a taxi driver in the family and hearing of some of the abuse they get as a common occurance )

dameofdilemma · 13/12/2022 09:17

I've given up on Uber since they started charging a fee even when they can't find you a driver - this now counts as a cancellation by the customer (even though the only reason you've cancelled is they can't find a driver) and they refund you in Uber credits only.
Luckily we have alternatives cab apps in our area.

emptythelitterbox · 13/12/2022 09:23

It's your fault so it'd be rude to try to leave a negative comment.

He called and you rejected it.

In the future be outside and visible so they can see you.

You can use the message feature to say something like, I'm standing in front of x shop wearing green coat with floral shopping bag. Makes it very clear where and who their rider is.

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 09:38

OK fine. But why didn't he message then?

LadyKenya · 13/12/2022 09:42

He was trying to call you, what more do you want, honestly!

Threadkillacilla · 13/12/2022 09:43

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 09:38

He doesn't have your number, just a call customer option.

Are you for real? YOU rejected his call. If anything he should negatively review you for being unreachable and cutting off his call.

MuttsNutts · 13/12/2022 09:46

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 09:38

OK fine. But why didn't he message then?

He’s a driver, driving. Making bluetooth call is one thing, pulling over to text you is another entirely.

You should have answered the call if you were waiting for an Uber.

MaryMollyPolly · 13/12/2022 10:19

Sausagenbacon · 13/12/2022 09:38

OK fine. But why didn't he message then?

He tried to - by phoning you. But you refused to accept the message.
