Waitrose "it's on us"

Just curious about the Waitrose "it's on us" initiative.. a few times I've been in (always with my daughter so I think she's the lucky charm!) the cashier has given us something for free.. we've had flowers, a gingerbread man and some chocolates.

It's a little thing but it does really put a smile on my face Grin

Does anyone on here work at Waitrose? How do you pick and is there a monetary limit on how much you can give away?

Has anyone else had some nice freebies?

A question for those who who work at Waitrose re the vouchers we get every Wednesday. They are linked to specific products but I've been told they can be used against any products. Is this correct?

This is lovely ive never had anything either though

IwishIwasSupermum · 12/12/2022 18:35

I had flowers given to me last week, yes they had a yellow sticker, but made my day and they still look lovely a week later. Great idea, instead of throwing away, give them away……made me happy x

A bit depressing to hear so many of these freebies going to people with a cute child/baby in tow. Doesn't affect me really, though, as where I live isn't posh enough to have a Waitrose anywhere near - nearest one is the motorway services 😁

Yep, with the Pret free coffee, my beautiful charmer of a colleague would always get one.

It was just another reminder on how beauty and flirting ability set some people apart.

I'm definitely not beautiful and have no idea how to flirt, but have had a couple of free Pret coffees and a free croissant.

I had picnic items in August. It was a fraught day and a lovely Waitrose assistant helped me find items.

They put it through 'on us'. I was in tears, it was a hard day made much better. We sat in the gardens outside in the breeze enjoying our cold drinks.

I was just talking to my husband about it and his immediate response was surely people would just give free stuff to their friends 😂

I mean I’m sure this happens but if we were caught doing this I don’t think we’d have a job!
It‘a completely at our discretion, it’s generally used when we don’t have a product and we offer a free alternative for the customer to try, or when a customer tells us about something going on in their life, happy or sad. I gifted someone some biscuits, a plant and a cuddly Santa yesterday as we had an issue with the tills that meant they were waiting for a long time and moved around to different tills. She was lovely and understanding.

You've been lucky. I went to Waitrose cafe when they were advertising free mince pies last year. I bought a coffee and asked for one, but they said they had run out. On the way out if the cafe later there were boxes stacked up for sale, just facing the café entrance.

britneyisfree · 13/12/2022 08:20

We've had daffodils and quite a few bags of my daughters favourite chocolate.... she has a lovely cashier that she has charmed.

I know it seems like there are loads but they are different mince pies, on different systems etc, it isn’t a case of just taking them off the shop floor.

paintitallover · 13/12/2022 09:04

@Purplelion ah, that's ok then!

The lovely Waitrose delivery driver gave me my bag of clementines free a few weeks ago, I was so chuffed you would of thought I’d won the lottery!

Quornflakegirl · 26/01/2023 21:18

I went into Waitrose on my dtwins birthday last year, I was upset as the woman I had ordered their cakes from (months earlier) let me down that morning. I asked the woman working in the bakery if they had a second cake like the one I had picked off the shelf and told her what had happened. She went into the back and brought out another cake with a “It’s on us sticker” on it. That small act of kindness made me feel much better.

Many years ago Waitrose cancelled my online order, I had baby dc who was just admitted to hospital with suspected sepsis and her twin at home with dh. I called them and cried on the phone as it was all a bit too much at the time. They told me they would organise something and later that evening someone who worked there dropped our shopping off with a big bunch of flowers for me! It was such a lovely thing for them to do.

wondabar · 26/01/2023 21:24

I love it when they do this and have been the lucky recipient of flowers, prosseco and saucisson - all on different occasions

LBF2020 · 26/01/2023 21:27

Our local Waitrose is also fab. I've had a bunch of flowers free, I'm not really sure why but it was a lovely gesture. They've also helped me carry bits to my car even though I would have been happy to struggle with it on my own. (It was a large parcel I'd collected from the store) I took a note of the staff members name and sent a feedback form on their website in the hope she/the store will be recognised.

Totally. I’m one of the invisibles of this world and this kind of thing never, ever happens to me!

Getabloominmoveon · 26/01/2023 21:37

I was given a large tub of Vanish once because they'd mis-priced it, and also some free olives before Christmas. If it makes you feel better PlaitBilledDuckyPuss I am old, and have no cute appendages.

surreyisik · 26/01/2023 21:47

I keep finding freebies in my weekly delivery. So far had a steak, nice pack of bread, blackberries and a tub of Oppo ice cream. A lot of the times there is a "free" sticker on them. Such a lovely gesture to that puts a smile on our faces at homeSmile

wizzywig · 26/01/2023 21:55

This makes.me want to shop there

SpeckledlyHen · 26/01/2023 21:57

I’ve had this twice in 10mths. Both times I was moving house. First time I sold my house and couldn’t find the right house to buy and before moving into rented house went to John Lewis to get some extra bedding as rental has more bedroom space, was a bit disjointed and sad and started chatting to the sales assistant about it and the lady gave me a box of biscuits as a gift from them (posh ones in a box worth £12). Second time i moved out of that rental into my new home and went to waitrose a bit disjointed at the till and they gifted me a bouquet. Both times were very discreet.

TokyoSushi · 26/01/2023 21:59

We don't have a Waitrose near us, I would love one!

AdoraBell · 26/01/2023 22:01

Those flowers are lovely. I’ve had a freebie with a delivery, customer before me rejected the substitute, it was 2 packs of fresh tuna. Driver offered them to me to avoid wasting them. Really enjoyed dinner that day 😁

Duckduckgooseagain · 26/01/2023 22:01

My kids got given some haribo at the self service check out but they never said it was on us so I ended up scanning them as I was so confused hahaha

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/01/2023 22:03

I might swing by Waitrose tomorrow - I've got a broken arm in a very obvious sling, so I fancy my chances.

inloveandmarried · 26/01/2023 22:05

I got picnic items on them. I was struggling that day and asked for some help.
